Does anyone know how many joules is necessary for a surge protector for computers?

is 2160 joules enough?

Hmmm...I have no idea, lol. And looking mine up online, it doesn't say how many joules it's good for. But the tech guy from Dell that came to replace my power supply and motherboard told me I got a good one.

thanks, Lizzy!

and Bree, while I am happy that you have a good one . . . that doesn't help me. :p i bought a new one that has a $300,000 connected equipment warranty. that sounds good, doesn't it?

300K that should work!! =) dh is at home mowing, when he calls me in a bit, i'll ask him and if he doesn't know...he can call his geek squad. =)

I'm working on looking this up because it seems like a strange way to rate a surge protector.

1 kilowatt hour = 3.6 ×10^6 J (or 3.6 MJ)

Still not sure how that's relevant, but I know what a kW/hour is. I just grab a surge protector and go. I didn't know they were different like that.

ETA:Still not really coming up with much. But considering it covers up to $300k I'd say you're good to go.

LOL, I know it doesn't help you. I didn't really finish my thought, haha. And now I have no idea what I was getting at.

But that sounds awesome, with a $300K warranty!

dh is saying that they don't even sell surge protectors by joules anymore, they sell them by the amount of $$ guarantee and it sounds like 300K is a really good one. hope this helps...he has been in management at bb for 9+ years, so... :)

thanks Lizzy and DH!

interesting about the joules thing vs $$ guarantee . . .

I'm not sure, but I know that I have one of the monster ones that is also power back-up... that thing is AWESOME! My mom bought it for me and I have to say that it's a lifesaver. So when power blinks, my computer does not shut off, meaning I don't lose things left open or have everything shut down for 3 secs of power loss.
