who has called 911?

DD called 911 today, she was just imitating her brother who does it in some computer game.

and this reminds me that I don't think I've ever discussed phone usage with her, or about 911. bad bad mommy. she's 4 so I really should have done this by now. ooops.

anyway, they called me back right away and I apologized profusely.

DD was very embarrassed. I don't think she'll do that again :p.

lol thankfully no :D :D :D but he knows how to use the speed dial on my phone & what number a few people are....... It makes me bonkers LOL

Oh no! Well, that is definitely a good skill to practice, but not for fun..lol. Poor little tot!

My phone dialed 911 while I was out on a training walk. That was embarassing. They hung up, and then called back. It was in my fanny pack and I couldn't hear them yelling on the other end of the line.

Thankfully they didn't make a big deal out of it. but I was still pretty embarassed.

Mine has....once i was in the shower and I got out to cops banging on my door b/c when they tried to call back nobody answered and they thought it was a real emergency

DS1 did that when he was about 4 ( I think) and they called back and I told them what happened. They asked if I wanted a Police Officer (who happened to be close by) to stop by and talk to him and I said YES!!! He did and my boy refused to talk to him but it sure taught him a lesson and he told each of his brothers the story and thankfully they have never done it (knock on wood). Poor little thing, I still remember the look on his face too!!!!

LOL! DD would have died if an officer had come to talk with her.

Mine haven't, but I have a funny story about something like that....

I worked my way through college by working at daycare centers. One afternoon we had a policeman come in and talk to the kids about basic safety stuff (helmets, etc) and he finished his talk with explaining to them about 911. He said, among other things, that they should call 911 if someone is trying to hurt them.
So... fast forward a few days. One of the parents comes to pick up her son, Malcolm, and tells us that the police had ended up at their house over the weekend because Malcolm had called 911. Apparently he had gotten in trouble for one thing or another and his mother sent him to his room to await a spanking. Well, in his little five-year-old mind, someone was "trying to hurt him" so he called 911 and told them that his mommy was going to hit him. Becuause of the nature of the situation, they sent an officer to their house to make sure everything was OK. Once he saw the situation and understood what had happened, everything was fine. But I think about that all the time when I hear about kids calling 911.
lol

Friend of mine works in the local 911 center. She says its actually a fairly common thing to have happen. Especially after an officer has visited a day care or a preschool and told the kids about 911. Some of them just have to try it out to make sure it really works.

Thankfully my kids have not done this, whew! But it does remind me that I should review this my oldest, because we haven't talked about it in a while.

gosh, who knew preschoolers could be so skeptical LOL

I did it when I was little. I also somehow managed, at age 5, I think, to call the White House. I have no idea what I was doing, but I tried to call the President. My parents didn't even know until they got the phone bill. LOL

Yup, mine did it before he was even 2 yrs old!!!
I didn't even realize he did...I knew he had gotten ahold of the phone and I took it away and maybe 20 minutes later, I had an officer knock on my door. Thankfully he was super sweet and laughed with me, but I was SOOOOOO embarrassed.

oh my!!! LOL!!!!!

LOL My son did that when he was four. The neighbors were grilling brisket in the backyard and he saw that smoke. So, he called 911 and told them the house next door was on fire.

They commended him for calling. The neighbors were so proud of him for looking after their house that they took him to Chuck E Cheese and had them announce that he was a hero. LOL

Neither of my kids have called 911 (yet), but I have had a cat call. When I was in my first apartment in 93, my roommate left our phone on the floor when she left for work. Schmenckmen (yes, that really was my cat's name--it's from a short-lived Jamie Lee Curtis/Richard Lewis sitcom) managed to step on the speaker button, then the 911 button. Ooooh, our landlord was pissed off! Police disturbed the other tenants because all they heard was constant meowing, so they had to come check things out. They scared the living daylights out of poor Schmenckmen too!!

awww, did you scrap that?

Thankfully my kids haven't (yet).

But at my SIL and BIL's wedding, someone got drunk and decided it would be funny to call 911 from the payphone. Cops showed up (because the station is a block away from the community hall). A little bit later, the same person called again. Cops showed up...again. They did it a THIRD time. Again, cops showed up...but that time they said if it happened again, my SIL and BIL would be paying a pretty big fine (up until that point, they didn't know what had been going on because other people were dealing with it and not bothering the bride & groom about it). So they sent that person home, lol.

how stinkin cute is that?!?! =) LOL!!!

Kaylie did about 2 years ago I think. We had just gotten new cell phones and she got a hold of one of the old ones and was playing with it. We didn't realize you could still call 911 from a phone that no longer had service on it so we thought it was okay for her to be playing with it. After awhile she came to me and said someone was talking to her on the phone, I told her that wasn't possible and told her to hang up the phone. A bit later she came to me again and said someone really was on the phone talking to her, sure enough I took the phone from her and there was a 911 operator on the phone!! I explained to them what happened and they said an officer would be coming to our house anyway to check things out but no one ever showed. Since then we have been very careful about letting the girls play with our old cell phones lol!!

Glad to know that I was not the only one to call when I was young. When they answered I said, "Oops! Wrong number!" lol. What number are you trying to dial that you would get "911" by accident lol.

In a past job, a co-worker was trying to fax something overseas. I think in the beginning was 0 - 11 - etc. And he wasn't sure if he was supposed to dial "9" to get an outgoing line or something and ended up not pressing the "0" hard enough. So he had that fax going to 9 - 11 xyz and the fax machine will try again, and again, and again if it gets a busy signal or a voice line lol. Poor 911 center that day lol. They somehow tracked the company down and called us to tell us lol.

Kim called when she was 2. She had been playing with the phone and I just took it away and hung it up. Seconds later the phone rang and it was the 911 operator calling us back to make sure all was well. I was mortified and appologized profusely. Of course she said that she would be sending an officer over to make sure (it's policy) and you know it's a good thing all was well because after nearly 2 years we are still waiting for that officer to stop and make sure I wasn't really in need of help.

I called 911 when I was a kid - it totally freaked me out when the lady answered. We had that sticker on the phone with the numbers, so I tried it out. When she answered, I hung right up. Then, I sat at the window waiting for the police to come. I was so scared. They never came;) I'm sure DS will try it at least once.

Oh goodness these stories are too much! DD hasn't dialed 911, thankfully, but I should really talk with her about it. She's really into phones right now, lol.

The little boy I babysat for a while last year did it once. The opporator called back and I was in tears I was so sorry. She yelled at me. Obviously she has never had kids. She said "What kind of mother can't keep kids away from a phone?" I'm sorry. My little girl and this little boy were not even TWO at the time. Totally an accident!!! you're not the only one. :)

I thought I would be SMART and program 911 into my phone when Sam was little {about 1, she is now 15}...NOT A GOOD IDEA!!! needless to say I was getting ready one morning, she was suppose to be drinking her bottle in the living room, when she pulled the phone off of the table and hit the button...BUT I didn't know she did it and I just hung the phone up and someone instantly called me back ...the 911 DISPATCHER...so from that point on, we just taught the kids 911 and didn't program that number in any of our phones!

My DD has done it too and she didn't know what she was doing. The operator that called back was extremely rude...totally made me feel like a bad mother.

Wow, that's crazy! DD1 is almost 5 and I never thought of even talking to her about phone usage. She's never dialed out before, mostly just picking up when the phone rings and grandma's on voicemail. That's about it (for now).

My DD phoned 911 when she was about 2, I guess. She just picked up the phone and I guess she pushed the "police" button on there that automatically dials 911. They were very understanding and said that it happens a lot.

I did it too when I was a kid and hung up as soon as I heard the women of course they called back and I answered ( I was like four ) the woman was like are you in trouble little girl and is your daddy or mommy home....I told her my mom was and she asked to speak to her I told her mommy was busy so she asked if we needed help I was like no I acidently called....lol she was so nice to me but this was like in '88 or '89 I can't remember....but I do remember the super nice lady that wanted to make sure I was ok.

DS#1 called about two years ago after the fire department and police went to talk to them at school about fire safety and what to do in an emergency however when they called us back (DH answered the phone and told them all was well and they said ok that they will notify the police that they didn't have to come out) he denied it because he thought he was going to get into trouble so he blamed DS#2 but he finally fessed up and we had a nice little talk that 911 is only for emergencys and what emergencys are.

Haha *I* called it once last year on accident (miss-dialed)and our phone had been left off the hook all night so when they called back and I tried to explain, it died mid-sentence. They kept calling back and when I couldn't get a whole sentence out...they sent two cops out to make sure I was all right. It was like 9 AM and I didn't even have a bra on yet...geez!
