People have been scaring me...

...with all this talk about their hard drives crashing! I backed up all my stuff about 3 weeks ago to an EHD. But so many people talk about how they backup to 2-3 different methods!
Sooooo..... do any of you use an online backup service? If so, how much does it cost per month? What do you like/dislike about it?

I use Mozy to backup my PC's HD and my EHD and it costs $4.95 per month. The initial backup does take awhile (2 months on my old slow computer & about a month on my new one) but once that is done it backs up pretty quickly if you do it on a regular basis.

ETA: my initial backup was well over 200GB of digital photos and digiscrap files, if you have less it will probably be much quicker

I *want* to use an online service, but I only get 10GB bandwidth transfer each month, so it's not an option for me. :( So, I bought a second EHD and will back up to it once a month, and it will be residing at my MIL's place. Photos taken in that time will be safe because I don't remove them from my card very often, lol.

I already have the majority of my stuff in 3 places (laptop hard drive, EHD, and work server), but I'm looking into getting a second EHD that I would back up to every few weeks. I also have a bunch of DVD's burned, and I'll be doing more tonight.

I only have one back up of all of my stuff and I am planning to burn my layouts (flattened) onto a CD/DVD soon. (they are uploaded to various printing sites right now so I'm not too worried). Anyway, I don't care as much about my supplies because they can be replaced. I care mostly about my layouts! I would be devestated to lose them!

I back up to a cd/dvd when my drive is working some thing happened and I have no idea what but it has got to be fixed and I put my stuff on a EHD and I don't delete the pics. off the memory card because if you delete too many times from the memory card it can cause your pics to have less quality when you take new pics. on the same card.

For my photo biz, I had to have a sure-fire back-up and so I chose Mozy. It is $5/month for their non-biz service (the business service is more). I like it because it just does it's thing automatically every night (have to leave computer on) without my having to do anything. I find that any back-up that requires me to do anything is going to have a serious risk of falling victim to procrastination or forgetfulness. I also like that it's off-site, so if something bad happens here (fire, flood, theft, whatever), it won't affect my back-up.

Oooooh! I don't have to do anything?! WOW! Is that for the biz service or both?

I know lots of gals burn to CD/DVD but I don't have the patience for that. Too sloooooow!

and somehow---after reading this what happened to me...it CRASHED---DIED...IT DIED...i have MOST Of my stuff on my EHD---but gotta see what I bought last week that didnt make it to the EHD yet :(( POO

I'm another fan of Mozy! I don't do the auto back-ups just because I want it to back up both my laptop and my EHD. But if I go more than 1 week without running one, a warning will pop up. :) It's cheap and easy to use. I've done it for about 18 months now, and I LOVE it.

WOW, Col! Have you had a HD crash before? LOL! I think your files will be safe. :)

LOL! Well I have stuff at work, cuz I scrap there. But eventually someone might find me out and get mad that I have like 40GB of scrap stuff on there (and I JUST deleted a whole mess outta there recently too, my stash is SCARY big). So in the beginning of the year I burned 6 DVD's and got the majority of my stash off the server. Of course that was about 6 months ago and I tend to have very little willpower......

I got my laptop a few months ago and kept nothing on it. Until I decided it'd be pretty sweet to not have to lug the EHD around whenever we went somewhere for the weekend. So I copied ALL of my SSD stuff, my CT stuffs, and my other favorites, onto my hard drive. So they are now in 3 places. None of that will get totally lost, thank goodness.

So in reality, if my EHD died, I'd lose a good amount of stuff if it wasn't backed up onto DVD's. But then it would all be old stuff that I probably forgot I even have. But, I still want to get a 500GB or so EHD and use that as a super backup for everything. We'll see. As we speak I am backing up my 2008 photos so far, and a whole mess of new stuff that hasn't been burned.

I do however, need to find a good way to catalogue what is on each DVD without having to pull it out and put it in and see if it has what I'm looking for.

I like ot ramble. Thank you for listening.

Oh and I'd do Mozy, but Jordan doesn't think it's necessary. He's a computer guy. He's think he's right 100% of the time. I might do it behind his back just to make myself feel better. What's $5 a month at this point.

Well sweetie, I look at it this way, I'd rather deal with the time it takes to burn than to lose all my stuff. =)

I have two internal hard drives, one to run my programs off of and one to store all my stuff. I always keep everything on the second and don't bother with the first. On top of that, I do weekly backups of everything to EHD and monthly backups of all my scrap stuff to DVD. I burn all my photos and layouts about every 6 months to DVD (3 copies). And on top of that I do monthly back ups of all my photos and layouts to SmugMug.

Yes, I've lost stuff before so I'm SUPER anal about backing up now. In fact, my hard drive crashed TWICE this week and I have to go replace it tonight. *sigh*

That is crummy Traci!

I also have 2 internal drives with the same set up as Traci. And then I have my main EHD that has files I use often and photos. I have a portable that has mainly scrap items on it that I update when I am going to take it somewhere.

Once a month I burn all recent files to DVD and move them to the EHD if I will continue to use them. I am getting another EHD so I can put all my designing files on it and keep the other one for scraps.

Mozy sounds great! I just signed up. They are asking for a referral code for someone who referred me. Does some one have one? Do you get some kind of discount or something for referring someone?

I use Mozy for $5/month. I also upload everything - digi scrap and all of my photos and video - to SmugMug. I'm a SmugMug addict - I love it!

My 320gig WD EHD crashed about 2 weeks ago. I thought it wouldn't happen to me, and it did!!

Thankfully, I recovered most of my stuff - and I had backed up to DVD and mozy a couple of weeks before that.

Definitely back up in at least 2 places!

Carbonite

Know you just got Mozy, and hope you never need it!

Just wanted to throw another name into the mix - I use Carbonite for online backup. Haven't had to recover anything from them yet, and the first backup took about two weeks, but I am really happy with them! There is no limit on how much you can back up, and it has a non-intrusive auto feature and simple interface I like. Not sure about monthly, but Carbonite is $49.95 USD for a year.

If anyone would like to give Carbonite a try, please PM me and I can get you a referral code for a month free. :)

i use Carbonite for our desktop. I think it is even easier than Mozy but I don't think it will back up EHDs :(. Since I just got a new EHD as a back up for everything I think I will be signing up for Mozy too.
