Help Me Think - Baby Stuff

My brother's wife's water broke last night when they were in the process of moving into their new home. She's now in the hospital having her baby a month early. She is a med student and was in Alaska on an internship until last week and was planning on getting all the baby stuff next week. So basically their house is half furnished, full of boxes and they have no baby things.

As soon as I get word of baby's safe arrival I'm going shopping to pick up the things she will need immediately for the baby. Can you help me think of everything that would include. She still wants to pick her own stuff as much as possible, so things like a stroller and crib can wait.

Here is what I have on my list so far

car seat (taking that directly to the hospital)
a few outfits
diapers
bassinet

What obvious things am I forgetting?

Eeeek! I'm going to be an aunt :) :) :)
 
Congrats on becoming an Aunt soon!

Only other thing I can think of is:
Swaddling blankets (receiveing blankets)
burb cloths
 
wipes! LOL paci? night light for their bedroom or wherever for night time feedings And for mom, if she's nursing, some of those nursing pads to keep in your bra, and you may want to see if she already got nursing bras.
 
bath, nursing pads, bottles (even if she is nursing always good to have on hand), receiving blankets, some onesies, diapers..i'd prolly wait on too many outfits..my babies live in onesies lol, bassinet or pack n play, some mother's friend or some n.i.p.p.l.e. cream, some baby hoodie towels, baby lotion and bath soap, baby washcloths, diapers diapers diapers, baby wipes, binkies--that is if the baby gets to come home w/her too....I'd def wait to see how delivery and stuff goes.

Congrats Misty! I would suggest some onesies. My babies lived in those. Does she have a diaper bag to put stuff in?
 
A few things I needed right away were:
Front Snap onsies (till that nasty stump fell off :D)
Mittens for their hands so they don't scratch their precious little faces
Socks (even if it's summer their circulation is so bad the first month their little feet will still get cold).
WIPES......LOTS OF WIPES (I swear I had the poopiest kids ever!!!:D)

Preemie clothes! Our twins were born just a bit early and were small. They looked sick (and they were completely healthy) in regular baby things because the clothes just swallowed them up! When I got Preemie clothes on them they finally looked normal! LOL They lived in the zip-up footed PJs from Children's Place for awhile. Preemies are usually colder than full term babies, so they needed to stay covered and wrapped up. We also needed hats to help keep them warm.

Congrats!! I can't imagine how overwhelmed she must feel right now!
 
I'm not a mammy and I wouldn't have a clue about baby stuff sorry but if you are close enough go and charge up their camera batteries for them :thumbup:

And possibly create a few new baby kits to go with all the baby photographs :thumbup: :thumbup:
 
Thanks so much everyone. You'd think this would be easy for me since I just had a baby 6 months ago, but we are all just a bit worried and frazzled here.

I'll be waiting and praying 'til the baby arrives, but I wanted to have a list ready to go.

I would forego the bassinet and go with a pack n' play.

I had my son a month early too and I wasn't prepared. I sent hubby to ToysRus with a HUGE list and told him he better come home with all of it!!!!

The only thing I had to ask for when my last one came a little early was receiving blankets (those tiny ones like to be swaddled more) and premie clothes. Maybe a bottle or 2 and a small can of formula just in case?
 
I think everything has already been mentioned, but what about alcohol & q-tips, burp cloths & feminine pads for mom.
 
Here are some must haves I can think of, so you can pick and choose...

Carseat (and be sure it's installed correctly)
Pack n Play (we used this instead of a basinett)
Pack n Play sheets
Lap pads
Crib Soother (Rainforest crib soother was a life saver!!)
Diaper bag
Swaddle blankets
No-scratch mittens
Nail clippers & a file (I used a file at first b/c their nails are still "fused" to the skin)
Pacis
Onesies
Footed sleepers
Sleep sacks
Burp cloths
Bibs
Baby tub
Wash cloths
Diapers
Wipes
Balmex
Vaseline (especially for a boy, if he's being circumcised)
Aquafor
Baby Lotion



For Mommy...
Huge, gigantic, long pads
Bottle of Motrin
Lap pads
Chocolate :)

If BFing...
Gel boob pads (life savers!)
Lanolin cream
Nursing pads

If FFing...
Bottles
Formula
Bottle brush

Hmm... that's all I can think of. Oh, and if you're up to it - my VERY favorite thing ppl brought us was frozen, homemade meals to pop in the oven, and GCs for places to get take-out!

This likely covers it - great job! We needed a portable changing pad/kit at the hospital and beyond - and I highly recommend the Skip Hop Pronto

Perhaps a cute hat/cap for the preemie?

Maybe a baby carrier if Mama will be walking around supervising the move-in? I finally found a carrier that is comfortable: the ergo baby carrier. Absolutely love it - my son was a big baby (10#) and didn't last long in the Baby Bjorn.

Thanks again everyone! I just got a call that she delivered a baby boy weighing in at a healthy 6lbs 13oz!!! Now I'm wondering if they had her due date wrong. At any rate mom, dad a baby are all doing great and I have shopping to do :) Thanks!

Wow, that's a great weight for being a month early! Congrats!!

I think everyone has covered all the items now. I can't think of anything else to add.
 
Congratulations, Auntie! Good luck helping all to get settled in! My Landon was a month early, but I think I had already bought out the store. :D
 
OMG that's a really big preemie lol. Congratulations on the newest addition to your family Misty. Mine were 5lb.5oz and 2lb 12oz lol so they were in special care a while, but the steam steriliser was very very much appreciated went it took 2 ounces of water in the bottom pile all the stuff in and into the microwave for 3 minutes if memory serves, oh and the baby sleeping bag thing (looked a little like a pillowcase with elastic around the top and pulled up to the waist) that was amazing since both of mine were small but squirmy so keeping them warm was hard lol. It's been a while since I have had to remember since we haven't had a baby in the house since Leo died and that's nearly 4 years ago. Umm I really can't think I think when it comes to babies they are usually pretty adaptable as long as they get fed, changed and cuddled lots lol. Lukas slept in the pushchair quite a bit when he came home since he hated the moses basket and was too small for anything else. Hugs Crystal xx
 
WOW! Congrats! So glad everyone is doing well! Can you imagine how big he would have been if he went another month in there? Welcome to the new little one!
 
I just had a baby two months ago and all of the things we definitely needed right away were (and I am sooo sorry for repeats! I didn't read the whole thread)

swaddling blankets
formula and bottles
burp cloths
lotions and washes
the gown for the baby to sleep in
newborn pacifiers
head rest for the car seat

....that's all I can think of right now..... HTH! Congrats on the new baby too! Hope mommy and baby are doing well. :)
 
I'm probably late as usual, but oh well.

You actually NEED surprisingly little those first couple weeks. A car seat, some onesies and gowns, and diapers and wipes is really all you use. Then however you feed - either nursing bras/pads/cream or bottles/formula. I didn't even use a bassinet for the first few weeks - way too lazy.

Depending how the delivery went, she might be ready to shop pretty fast. I didn't find out the sex of #4, so I was at Babies R Us the day I was released. :p
 
Oh Misty your such a wonderful person and an amazing aunty!!! Congrats Congrats!! I cant wait to see pictures!! I think you got some awesome suggestions. This isnt a must have but I would love to suggest a sling!! I couldnt live without mine!! Hugs sweetheart, keep us posted!
