I am getting an new camera!!! I am upgrading from my Sony Cybershot 8.1 MP to a DSLR!!! HOLLER!!! I have been praying for this day! My mil actually wanted to get a camera just like mine so instead she is gonna buy mine from me for a very good price and then we are going to use that $$ for my new camera!! I soooo ha-ppy!!

Ok so which one should I get and why:

Nikon - 10.2MP
or
Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP

These are the only ones I like in my price range...so help a Lizzy out...which one?

As a total PnS girl, who was soooo wanting to get a SLR( I chickend out and upgraded my beloved Fuji with a hybrid model)...and tested them all out in my hands...I much prefered the Nikon brand and that is what I will go with when I get some balls about myself and just break down and do it.

I would suggest going some where where you can put your options in your hands and see which one "feels" right!

I agree, you should stop by a camera store or electronics store and try holding/using them. They are both good cameras, so it's really whatever is more comfortable for you.

I aksed tonnes of people this questions when I was shopiing for mine. The answer was always the same, personal preference, the percon was either a Nikon person or a Cannon person. I think both are equal!!

I went with the Nikon, because of all of the adds and what not for the EASE of USE, I needed something relatively simple to use, not one I needed a University Degree to use, KWIM.

I love my NIkon and will totally stick to this brand now

I have a a Canon Rebel from a couple of years ago and LOVE it...the only reason I bought Canon was my lenses from my Canon Film SLR are interchangeable with the DSLR...but if I had a choice, I would probably go with the Nikon...I have a firend that has a Nikon and I really like how hers feels....but that's just me.......I think you need to go to a camera store and try a couple of them out and see what you think...GOOD LUCK:thumbup:

This is one of those Coke vs. Pepsi kind of questions, Fizz. Sure, the taste and formulas are a little different, but basically they're the same thing. I will admit to not looking at the links you provided, but if they have the same MPs and are basically the same camera under different brand names, just go in and see which feels better to you.

I'm a Canon gurl myself, but I've never had a problem with Nikon. I've just never used one.

Have fun! DSLRs are the best.

I JUST got a Nikon D40 as an early bday present and even though I know nothing about it, I love it already! kenrockwell.com has a recommended cameras page that I found very helpful!

I'm a canon girl...rumor has it a new nikon will be released int he fall though. Only thing about the d60 is you can't use the 50mm lens with auto focas on the d60. I LOVE the 50mm lens..I use it most so that might be worth considering

I'm a Canon girl myself. I have the 20D and upgrading to the 5D (dreaming of the Mark III LOL)

When I had the Rebel I loved it.

Really you can't go wrong with either. I've heard nothing but good about both. I have the Xti. I wish I would have held out for the Xsi since it has an image stabalizer and I've got some hand-shake action going on from time to time, lol. The Nikon is cheaper, as are the assessories, so if that's important to you, that's something to consider. Good luck with your decision.

Okay, with film cameras, I had a Canon & a Nikon. I used the Canon until the motor died, but it always felt a bit clunky to me. Then I replaced it with a Nikon and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Even the sound of the picture taking was better!

Now to digiworld... In my opinion, the coloring is better on Nikon. It just seems to capture light better. My sister-in-law has the D70 that she let me play with last week... oh baby!!!! I NEED one! I have a non-DSLR Nikon now and I have never had a problem with it until the last couple of weeks. But I think it's the battery more than the camera. Btw, that Nikon is over 10 years old.

either way, congratulations! Have fun with your new camera!

Another girly for the Rebel! Love it!! Never really even held a Nikon though so my judgement may not be a fair one!!! For me it is very easy to use. Just set it to Auto mode and your off baby!!! It's a shame I have had it for 4 years and never taken it off Auto mode, well actually I did once for a Shutterbug Shakedown challenge here.

Good luck with your choice!!

Go to the store and hold both.

I had a hard time choosing between the Rebel and the D70. In the end I picked the D70 because it felt more substantial, the Rebel felt like a toy in my hands.... again, it's about personal preference.

My Rebel's name is Spike. (cuz he's a rebel)

As in, (heading out the door), "Should we grab Spike?"
"Yeah, you never know what might be worth shooting, babe."

Seriously. That's a common thing around this house. (But then again, my laptop has always been known as Fred, cuz she's the smartest girl I know)

Rebel rebel rebel

If I was to go with a Nikon the D70 would be the lowest model I'd go with. If you go with the D60, might as well save the $$ and go with the D40-not much difference

I love love love my XTi and have not had any problems with it in the year I've had it. It's like my 4th baby & goes pretty much everywhere with me lol! Also love my 50mm lens, I used it 99% of the time until just recently when I got my 28-105mm zoom lens in May.

I agree with everyone about touching, holding the camera. I was all for the XTi until I held it and it just felt too small and light, so I went for the 30D and it was JUST perfect and I LOVE it!!

We have only had a Canon Rebel XTi, and I love it! DH uses it all the time and takes it everywhere and I didn't have anything to take pics of the kids. So for my birthday he bought me the next one down, a Rebel XT. I can share his lenses which works out great.

I am only shooting in manual now, I really love it, but since I've not had a Nikon I can't really compare. I find it light and easy to use! Good luck!

I'll have to go with Canon too but if you ask a Nikon owner they will say Nikon so you really need to go check them both out and see which one you like best like others have mentioned.

Good luck!

You definitely need to go to the store and play with both of them. Go to a camera store and just play. Most of those people will let you just mess wtih it, without throwing out a big sales pitch (or at least that was my experience at several different Ritz stores).

I do agree with Meg though. I'm fairly certain the reason I went with the D80 a few months ago (besides liking that the Nikon felt heavier and more substancial in my hands, like someone else mentioned) was that the D40 and D60 don't have as many lens options. That might not seem like a big deal now as a beginner, but if you get really into it you might want that freedom further down the road.

So if you go and like Nikon over Canon, I'd go with the D40 and save the money you would have otherwise spent on the D60. If you check out the kenrockwell.com link that was posted and go to the recommended cameras section, you'll see that he REALLY pushes the D40 over any other (aside from the pro lines like the D300).

How exciting sweety!! I have the xti and LOVE it! I am a diehard canon girl! I do agree though that you should def test the waters with both and find what fits you best! Good luck and happy shopping!!

I wanted an SLR but I am waiting for the Canon Rebel XSI to come down a little in price. I would go in and check them out. You can hold them and look at the controls/buttons etc. Look at how easy/difficult thee controls are to use. How sturdy they seem etc. Nothing beats in person perception because you can look at them online and even talk to alot of peo-ple and still not know for sure if itll work for you

I have the Nikon D40x & I LOVE it!!!!
But, yes, definitely go to the store and hold them! I was planning on getting a Canon, but didn't like how it felt in my hands! The Nikon just "fit" perfect!

will either of these cameras give me that "professional look" where it will focus on your subject and blur out the background. i mean i want a camera that will take AMAZING pics (in comparison to my current sony). i get the whole going with the d40 instead of the d60, makes perfect sense and at this point i am leaning twords the rebel. so tell me will the rebel let me take those amazing photos i want? sorry for my ignorance. :p

I don't see why it wouldnt. I would say after you get the hang of all the options and practice some youll be able to take some awesome photos with any of the cameras mentioned. Check out this link for some more info on cameras (and to see the samples of some of the people who use these canon cameras)

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/

It is a canon forum so since you are leaning towards the rebel you can go there and ask for samples of the photos taken with that particular camera to get an idea of what is possible.
