What do you use and what do you like about it? Bonus points if the pill turns you into a psychopath and you've found a better alternative.

I called my dr. to tell her this low-estrogen stuff she was giving me was making me out of control, and she said, "Hmmm, that's very rare, though I suppose it *could* happen..." as though I normally scream at my children and refuse to hug them when they cry. :mad: Obviously something is wrong with me, so wrong in fact that my husband said recently maybe it would be better to have another baby than to have to live with me on birth control. and trust me, that's BAD coming from him.

So help me out, girls; I'm desperate!
 
I take Yaz. It's low-estrogen....I had a breast reduction a few years ago and told my dr. I did NOT want them growing back b/c of a pill! LOL.

I'm happy w/it.
 
My first thought was British Columbia too Kellie! LOL!

Sorry I'm not much help, I've resisted the pill for years because I have enough anxiety and depression issues that I just can't have something else messing with me. So that leaves and IUD (which scares the crap out of me) and condoms... yes, I feel like I'm in high school, but that's honestly what we use.

I had a friend who LOVES the Nuvaring thing, but I think that really is just like the pill with the hormones that is releases.

I hope that you can find something that works for you though and I'm so sorry you are feeling so bad!
 
well you know me....I'm kind of a BC loser...but that might be apparent from the size of my family. :p
 
I'm not on anything, as Jeff got fixed up, but when I was on bc I was a raving lunatic. LOL My friend is the same way and she got an IUD. Loves it.
 
I use Alesse, have for years, before that used Ortho something. I've always been on the BCP, so I don't even know what I'd be like when I was off of it.

I find it really good, and I don't have any problems that I know of, again, I've been on them SO long, I'm not even sure what I am like without hormones.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time Kellie. ((hugs))
 
what about the Depo Shot? I believe it is a different combo of hormones than pills.

Non-hormonal it is really just NFP and Condoms
 
I don't have to worry about BC anymore, right after Kyle was born I had my OB take care of that little problem lol! But before that I used Ortho Evra (aka the patch) for a few months and was pretty happy with it, but it was an expensive prescription copay on our insurance so I quit using it. I never liked any of the pills I tried, they always gave me horrible mood swings and other icky side effects. Hope you can find something that works for you Kellie!
 
I use the Mirena IUD... I love it... lighter periods and it stays in for 5 years... I'm getting it put back in next month. (I just had my baby)

I'm thinking perhaps *I* need a trip to British Columbia. alone.
 
Yes, the pill turns me into an absolute raging psycopath. I can't use any hormonal bc at all. We use NFP with spermicide and condoms during fertile times. ;)

OMG!! You crack me up, girl!!:D

Sorry I don't have any BC advise for ya, Kellie...I am so resistant to taking it....I've hated it whenever I've taken it, so then I stop. :)

I hope you find something that works for you!!
 
I'm a Yaz girl, too. Changed from Ortho-evra (or something like that) for the same reason. Seems to be doing better. You can always ask for a little happy meds, too. I'm not a big pill taker or anything, but I can't stand that yelling at my kids/hubby all the time feeling. Nothing a little Wellbutrin won't fix!
 
I'm also a Mirena girl. It only takes 15 minutes to "install" and is painless. Although I wouldn't call myself a raging psychopath on the pill, I was, let's see how shall I put it, extremely "crabby", lol. The only downer with the IUD is that you can spot for up to three months, which I was warned about and did happen to me. Now that the three months have past, I have only spotting for my period. I haven't noticed any other side effects.
 
I've heard good things about IUDs and the nuvaring.

I am 99.9% sure that birth control pills are the reason it took us 8 months to get pregnant with our first.... I wasn't crazy on them (that I remember) but that was another downside for me!
 
I've used so many for various hormonal reasons lol

I've taken and been happy with Yasmin, Alesse, Traphasil, Loestrin (my fave), and now Micronor since I'm nursing...I haven't had a cycle since before I was pregnant with my now 2yr old though so i'm not sure how much help I am lol

I tried the patch but my body had a reaction to the adhesive so I had to stop using it. The only one I had a big problem with was Ortho-Tri-Cyclen..it raised my blood pressure like crazy
 
NFP doesn't work for me because I don't ovulate regularly...like I ovulated on day 40 when I got pregnant with my second and had none of the signs of fertility.

I'm thinking about seeing if the Patch or the Ring are available here. I'm also thinking about getting my own place till we get this worked out.
 
ask for some Zoloft...I'm having a bit of PPD and dr put me on some a few weeks ago...i'm a happy girl some days now lol
 
I had my tubes tied with my last, but we successfully prevented pregnancy five years in between kids with just watching the calendar (with creative ideas for fertile times) and condoms (w/ spermicide). I was seriously terrified of getting pregnant, but hormones were rejected because of how horribly sick I was all 9 months with the first.

And since we conceived our first month trying when it was finally time, I feel like I definitely can say "successfully" and not accidentally.

if you are hormonal with BCP, I really wouldn't recommend the Depo shot. I had issues with the pill (and actually ended up pregnant with my second while taking it), so my doctor recommended the shot. Needless to say, he wasn't my doctor after that - I gained over 50 pounds in 2 months, and was soooo hormonal, and miserable, and had NO sex drive ... thankfully, no more BC issues needed for us, I took care of that after the last baby. Four was enough for me.

And what the heck ... don't you wanna come visit us lovely gals in British Columbia?? heheheee
 
I'm on Kariva, which is a substitute for Mircette. I've been on a lot of different pills over the years - Loestrin, Ortho, etc. for various reasons. I'm not an emotional mess on any of them really. I think I'd be more of one without them. I was put on the pill due to irregularity and severe cramping when I was 18. I've been on them pretty much since, more than 20 years. I did take a year break from them only to give my body a rest from the hormones, as I have not had children (or even tried for that matter). I did have to switch at one point because of the hormone level was too high and gave me migraines. Another switch was to get off the Loestrin - it was too low and I had spotting throughout the month. Of course now I've been on the pill so long I've even stopped having a period - I've had one in the last year and a half - but the doctor says that is normal for someone who's been on them as long as I have.
 
There is a lot of stuff I don't like about hormonal bith control so I have never been on it. I had a friend who was so crazy depressed on it she was hospitalized, friends who were super crabby and some who gained loads of weight - plus I'm a little afraid of messing with my hormones. My mom was on it for many years, and she died of breast cancer at age 39. That was way back before hormone levels are what they are now, but let's just say I'm at risk for the cancer myself and don't want to add any further risk.

NFP and condoms have worked for us. And if we have a third child, it's not the end of the world. My DH is looking into getting snipped when our son turns 2 and we're sure we don't want any more.
 
Another Mirena IUD gal, had one for about 1 1/2, had it taken out - got prego on my next cycle. I had issues with the pill ( aka I was crazy) and I take Prozac for PMDD, but with the IUD I didn't get my period, and was feeling pretty good mentally.

Good luck finding something that works for you!
 
I got the Mirena IUD in March and I LOVE it!!! I completely stopped having AFlo until last month and then I only spotted for about 4 days. Not bad. Insertion doesn't feel great by any means but I took a 600 mg Motrin and 2 Tylenol right before and was fine for the rest of the afternoon.

DH doesn't want anymore kids. I have given him 5 years to get snipped. That's when the IUD comes out and he will have to be the responsible one!
 
Well I've never had kids or anything, but I've been taking Yasmin for......6 years now. I've never had any side effects (and I'm not a really PMS-y kinda girl anyway), but my sister did. She also had issues with the patch. I think she uses nuvaring now.

Good luck hon. I hope you can work something out and get back to normal.
 
Nuvaring! It is incredible! Love it! Best birth control evah! :)

DH had the snip after DS2 was born but I have endo, incredibly painful endo and I get really really snappy for about 10 days a month. My OB put me on the Nuvaring 6 months ago after trying an assortment of pills that either made me sick to my stomach or every more snappy.

It evened out my moods within days. The pain went away in 8 days instead of 14 and since I replace the ring without the week break 4 times in a row I had no pain for 3 whole months. My weight didn't change, my appetite didn't change. It goes in easy and you don't have to think about it again for 3 weeks.

Mirena was PAINFUL to put in! I still got my period while I had it, I had it for 3 years. It gave me down below pain so I had it removed. OMG MOOD swings when I got it out! My body was so used to all the extra hormones I was not a good person to live with for 3 months after i got it out! I've had it out since March and I am still not ovulating, LONG LONG periods & spotting. I would never get one again. I really really dont want to put any more hormones into my body at this point. So were just using the pull out method LOL
 
I did depo for a while but I gained weight and had other side effects from it. After a while, my DH was snipped and I had endo ablation and have not had a period SINCE. The best thing EVER! LOL

u know that's fake right? lol..it's a parody on Seasonale which is a bc that cuts your cycle down to 4x a year...

but omg that parody is hilarious..I saw it on SNL and youtube lol
 
Another Mirena IUD/IUC lover here!! I am unable to be on any form of BC that contains estrogen (loooong story) so Mirena was the perfect option. I got it inserted at my 6-week post-partum appt with my youngest son who is now 2 1/2. I spotted for a few months after the insertion and then haven't had even the SLIGHTEST hint of a period since. BRILLIANT!
I love it because the newest research is suggesting that, when it stays in place properly (which it almost always does), the Mirena IUC is MORE effective at preventing pregnancy than getting your tubes tied! Woo Hoo! I plan on keeping mine for the five full years and then getting another (as well as hubby getting snipped). Honestly, I can't say enough about it!
