Heartburn, anyone??

I have been dealing with some yucky yucky heartburn these past few weeks with this baby. I dealt with this later in pregnancy with Libby, so I'm wondering if it's just going to get worse with this one....I was going to call my doctor yesterday, but I didn't feel like waiting all day for a call back. Does anyone know if it's safe to take anything other than tums during pregnancy?? I take Tums probably 3-6 times a day and I'm just so sick of the chalkiness of them, it's not even funny!! I'm tired of feeling the burn!! LOL

I was gonna suggest Tums, but I see you've already been taking that. That's all my doctor would allow me to take, but bear in mind that my last pregnancy was 12 years ago. LOL

I had it bad too! After the tums failed, I tried Mylanta and Maalox too with no help. My OB eventually told me I could take Pepcid, Tagamet, Prilosec or Zantac over the counter and the Pepcid seemed to work for me.

I was going to say Mylanta, I had to take that when I was pregnant and it did help a little more than the Tums. Heartburn is no fun - hope it passes fast for you!

My doc gave me a list of "okay" meds ...

Mylanta
Maalox
Tagamet
Zantac
Pepcid AC
Tums

I haven't had it bad this time, but I did VERY bad with DS. I kept a bottle of Cherry Mylanta in the fridge and it would help soothe it some when it was really bad. Keeping it cool really helped with the taste too.

Okay, I just dealt with this... on the cheaper side of things, take the Zantac, if you want all day relief, take the Prilosec Time Release, it's pricier, but worked out better for me in the long run. I took it every night an hour before bed and I was good to go. I had really bad heartburn and reflux with both boys.

I think I'm going to try Pepcid or Zantac...I'm really afraid to try any liquid stuff....I get very pukey with medicine, esp if it's chalky, LOL!! I'm such a baby!!:p

Thank you SO much, girls!! :)

Don't forget to go to the Zantac website and sign up, they usually have pretty spectacular coupons since... well...

Laurie, I hate to say it but you have 152 more days of heartburn to go. :hug

I ate the chewy Rolaids like candy all day long. And took Tums for the calcium because of severe leg cramps. When neither really worked anymore my doctor put me on a prescription med called Cemetadine. It helped a LOT! My heartburn was 10x worse with Rhett (#2) than Derrick....

I hope you get some relief soon!!!

Awww, I'm sorry you are having a rough time with it! I know that my aunt used to walk around with a bottle of Mylanta. She literally never left home without it while she was pregnant. She also found that keeping it in the fridge helped too!

I would get heartburn so bad with my daughter that even drinking water made me get it. That was over 17 years ago though and all I could take was rolaids. They have some of those chewy rolaids now. Maybe those might help? Also my doctor said eating smaller meals more frequently and staying away from acidy/spicy foods would help. Drinking a glass of milk also helps me

I take Prilosec OTC. That's the only thing that has worked for me.
When I was pregnant I complained to the dr.'s about it and they pretty much ignored me. When I told them I was eating tums like candy, over 25 a day- they finally prescribed zantac. They freaked out because of all the calcium or something in the tums and finally gave in about it.

I bought some Zantac tonight, so I'm crossing my fingers that it works!! :)

And Bryn - I KNOW!!!! 152 more days is a long time to have heartburn!!

This might sound weird but something that *really* helped me was chewable Papaya Digestive Enzymes that I got from my local health food store.

OH girl I feel your pain. Heartburn was horrible during pregnancy. It was so bad that even water would set me off. LOL! And to this day, I can't eat a melon without getting it (which I have to wonder if that's in my head, but well... it FEELS real).

Ugh heartburn just stinks! With my second I had heartburn with everything! I never took anything because I couldn't stand the taste of tums.

I hope it eases up because heartburn is so uncomfortable!
