I loath the dentist...

I've have problems with my teeth and gums since I was kid and as a result I've developed an unfair loathing for the dentist or anyone who wants to come near my mouth with metal. So, unfortunately, I have not kept up on regular cleanings.. (but I DO brush twice a day & floss a couple times a week). I know I don't have any cavities, but I'm really worried about gum recession (? sp). Anyway, the girls and I have back-to-back appointments tomorrow morning starting at 8:30! YAWN! I'm so nervous I could hurl (which I actually did once in the dentist chair). Even the thought of a simple cleaning makes my pulse rise. Waaah!

Anyway, just thought I'd get that off my chest. lol Thanks for listening.

Awww, you're not alone. I have an insane, powerful, irrational fear of going to the dentist. Seriously just reading your thread gets my blood pressure up. I have an appointment coming up and I'm dreading it with the dread of a million dark moons. Agggh!

GL tomorrow!

Ohhhh right there with you. I so hate going to the dentist, and I've had just about everything done to my teeth. I get so nervous when it comes close to my appointments.

I hope everything goes well for you tomorrow. {{HUGS}}

I'm terrified of the dentist...I had a dentist growing up who would slap me if I started crying, he wouldn't give me prizes if I started crying, and he ended up pulling 4 teeth without adequate freezing (hurt like a SOB) and one of them was the WRONG one. Needless to say, I didn't go back to the dentist for MANY years, and before I turned 18 my mom wanted me to go again because we had free dental - she had to book a consultation to meet the dentist because I was so afraid of them (I almost ran straight out of there when I heard a drill) and when they did the work on my teeth they had to put me on laughing gas.

I've only been to the dentist twice since then...I just can't make myself go unless I'm in major pain. The first time I went in, they pulled 2 teeth right then and there, lol (my wisdom teeth)...the second time they gave me a choice between having another tooth pulled or a root canal...I didn't know which to pick so I went home and it stopped hurting, so I haven't gone back. 3 of my molars are broken and hurt occasionally, but I won't go back until they're sooo bad I can't stand it anymore. I know they can't fix them and will have to pull them, so I refuse to go until I can't stand it anymore, lol.

Eeek Bree, you've had a rough time with dentists. I have all 4 of my wisdom teeth and they need to be pulled. *shudder* The two top ones came in straight with plenty of room, but the two bottom ones are impacted and I don't even want to know how they'll get them out. I have a feeling they'll have to put me out completely if they want to start doing major stuff like that.

Funny you should say that! I'm sitting here all numbed up because I just got back from having two fillings fixed. I had chips in old fillings so they had to be replaced. I am fine with going to the dentist, I only dislike the numb feeling for hours. Right now I feel like a Picasso painting, all strange with a disfigured droopy numb face. LOL

I absolutely hate the dentist. I haven't been there in a while either. I hope everything goes well tomorrow.

I won't share what I think about dentists right now, because I only want to share positive thoughts LOL...but you are NOT alone in your loathing. Hope all goes well!

LOL! So now would NOT be the time to remind everyone of my career as a dental assistant, right? LOL! I worked on teeth all day long today. :D :D :D

OMG all four of my wisdom teeth were impacted..and you are right, you don't want to know how they get them out...I agree though, I hate the dentist. I went to one about three years ago, and he told me I needed over $6,000 of work on teeth that never hurt. He told my wife the EXACT SAME THING...shady much?

I'm a Valium girl myself for the dentist..NI why it makes me just terrified I've never had a bad experience with the denist. I did throw up once when i was a kid from the flouride (it was soooo nasty) but never had anything traumatic there to hate it. I didn't get terrified until my late teen/early adult years. I still go twice a year..but I NEED a pill an hour before lol

I totally understand! I have a serious distaste (no pun intended) for the dentist. I need some work done but after hubby came home with his $13,000 dental bill, I want to stay FAR, FAR away from that place.

I hope it goes well for you Laura.

I'm terrified of the dentist due to some bad experiences in my past. I cry in the waiting room, I am so scared. I feel bad for my current dentist group & their assistants because they have never hurt me beyond the numbing needle but I just can't help myself. The lady who did my last root canal was so nice & understanding while I was sobbing in her chair.

I don't mind the dentist. I've had many cavities filled, impacted teeth removed, braces twice (okay, that's the orthodontist). I like to go when I'm feeling very tired so I have no energy to be nervous. i've fallen asleep in the chair a few times.

Can you take an ipod or something and listen to music? close your eyes and just pretend you are somewhere else?

Well my sweetheart, tell the dentist to give you gas. It doesn't make you sick and when all is said and done they give you oxygen to get the gas out of your system before you go home. The dentist DOSEN'T touch my teeth unless they give me gas first. Good luck sweetie. Let me know how it went.

Geez...We poor dental people are hated here I see! LOL Being a Dental Hygienist, I am sorry to hear that you have had poor experiences. You need to find one that is compassionate and caring. You have to be comfortable with them first.

Good luck. I have a few patients like you ladies but they gradually come around. They may never love it but they come regularly and that's half the battle.

Oops, sorry Rachel and Libby... nothing personal. I would prolly be much happier if I could go see you guys instead. lol Unfortunately, I'm stuck with whoever works in the clinic on base. However, there's a HUGE amt. of soldiers coming home from Iraq in Sept and usually when that happens the dental clinic stops seeing dependents which means we get to find a dentist in the community. I've heard there are quite a few good, english speaking dentists in the area, so if I need anything major done (like the wisdom teeth) maybe I can see a nice dentist who will be gentle with me. lol

BTW, I've been up since 4:30 am cuz I'm so worked up about all this. UGH! Hey Meg got any pills I can barrow? lol

I've always had a huge fear for dentists. I never really went as a child so I had this huuuge fear built up, then when I finally went, it wasn't a good experience. So I didn't go back again for years. I had part of a tooth knocked out next to my front teeth and I've been so embarassed, I don't smile with my mouth open or laugh anymore. When I realized I was too embarassed to even laugh with my mouth open in front of my 2 year olds, I had to suck it up and just go. I've got a lot of work to be done still, but recently I've had a few fillings, they pulled the one that broke, I've had a root canal, and I've got to get my (wonderfully impacted) wisdoms out soon, but my dentist kicks butt. She is so awesome, and she literally stops if she sees me getting goosebumps to check out if I'm still ok with what she's doing. (It helps that the chair I sit in has a massager in it) I've never felt a thing she's done to me either. I asked for gas at my appt with the crappy dentist years ago, and he did give it to me, so if you're feeling nervous that should help you!
I'm totally comfortable now with going, and even look forward to my appts since I know I'll be able to smile and laugh when it's all over, but there's not a bit of fear lingering. I think it really helps to have a dentist you're comfortable with. I hope your appt goes well!!!
