Over the last 4 or 5 months I have been trying to trim down our spending since the price of gas (and everything) just keeps going up and adding another mouth to our family to feed. I soon realized our biggest expense waster was food...namely JUNK FOOD!!! 5 months ago we use to spend about $650-$700 on "groceries" a month.....that was even with me doing "menus". So since then I have slowly been accustoming my family to alternative. Not only for the price factor but for the health factor too!! And trimming down our "extras".

turkey sausage instead of pork sausage
ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef
More "meatless type" meals
Actually eating a "serving size"
No more chips/pop/cookies/ice cream ect....
More fresh and frozen veggies (that I can control the amount I take out) instead of canned that we would end up throwing the "leftovers" out any ways cause no one wanted to eat "old veggies".
General "cleaners" instead of 5 or 6 different ones.
Actually watching the kid in the bathroom so they don't waste tooth paste, shampoo soap, mouth wash ect....(I was stunned by really how much my girls "wasted"!!!! Without watching them we use to go through a tube of toothpaste a week....now we use one a MONTH!!! We use to use a big bottle of Listerine about ever two weeks, they use to fill the cap the like clear full...now it last us about a month and a half!!!)

And I am proud to say that I walked out of the store today having only spent $311.40. That was for a months worth of food, ALL our HBA stuff AND diapers, formula and baby food for the month!!!

Our bill was like $291.40 and then we got $40 cash for our "grocery" envelope because I can not get a months worth of milk and egg and we also like any "bread product" fresh not frozen. So that $40 covers those few items we will pick up weekly!!!

Guys you don't know how THRILLED I am, I use to lose sleep over it and now after a few months hard work I accomplished my goal!!!

OK I'm a dork and just had to share!!!! :D :D

That is awesome!! I keep talking about doing this but never seem to make it a priority! You've inspired me!

Thats really awesome! I so need to do this! My EI is coming to an end soon, and I KNOW we are spending way too much money on food! And eating out. And watching movies. And And And.... its depressing!

Question for you! I see you are buying turkey instead of ground meat... is it cheaper? Where I live (Saskatchewan, Canada), turkey is about 4x the price of ground beef. I wanted to buy some for a healthy alternative, but when its $24 for about 1.5 lbs, I couldn't justify it, lol!

Oh My Word.....$24 for a 1.5lb **ACK** that's robbery :D :D

Yes ours is much cheaper!!!

For a 1lb roll of turkey sausage (breakfast or like an Italian) I pay $2.58. Now the "name brand" sausage is well over $3 and some over $4. I could buy the Wal mart brand for about $.30 cents cheaper (which is what we use to buy) BUT....it has 23 g of fat per serving and the turkey only has 5 g of fat per serving!!!! I'll pay the extra .30 cents for the less fat!!! :D :D

Lean ground Beef (93/7) is over $3 a pound for us and I can get ground white turkey breast (only 4 g of fat) for about $2.50 per pound.

That is so great........I spend anywhere from $150.00-$185.00 every week and a half!!!! Mind you I DO NOT buy junk food at all except Ice Cream, NO soda and every so often I get chips!!!! That is also NOT including the milk thing either although I go through a gallon about every two days...sometimes one!!!! We only order out once a week ( sometimes ) and when we do it is usually Pizza.

I have six mouths to feed and 5 of them eat A LOT!!!!

It's the same thing here too (Newfoundland, Canada), the ground turkey is outrageously expensive compared to the beef, and we can't even get it half the time! My kids love it though, so I try to grab it when I can actually get it.

That is so awesome! I need to get better about sticking to my budget. I've been really bad lately, but I really need to cut back on unneccessary stuff, since necessary stuff keeps getting more expensive. I just hate to worry about it though. It stresses me out, even though we're really well off financially.

That is so fantastic!!! It's totally a lie that we'll be happier if we spend more money...this will be healthier for you, your family, the environment, not just your bank account! It's had to be disciplined, you SHOULD be totally proud of yourself!!!

How exciting!!! I get really excited when I save money big time, so I know how this is for you!
