GROSS. Advice needed please...

OKay, I think I have a yeast infection.
First one.
And I don't have a family doctor, or a mom to ask about this. And I just really don't feel like calling up one of my girlfriends who I see every day to ask *LOL* too weird.
So, do I really *need* to go see a doctor if I'm sure that's what I must have, or can I just go buy the medication?
What works?
Is there anything else I need to know??

Help please! I need this over. Like YESTERDAY.

Personally, never being one to say you don't need to see a dr, your first infection needs to be checked out.

However, from experience, I know when I get one (always comes if I take antibiotics and I didn't do the acidophilus treatments) I know what it is and yes, just buying the over the counter works just fine. It's messier or not as fast as taking the 1 pill version you can get from the dr.

If you have a clinic - you can stop in there, as well.

I usually eat lots of yogurt but you have to make sure it says live and active cultures and I also take acidopholus (spelling?) I def think its okay to use the over the counter. I recommend the 3 day treatment, thats always worked best for me. The yeast infections are fairly harmless. I only actually get them in pregnancy. I know how much they suck honey :(

i have gone the over the counter route and while it will work its not as fast as that pill. I'd try to find a clinic and get checked out.

hope you get to feeling better. those suck!!

I would go to the doctors... just to make sure it IS a yeast infection. If it is they will prescribe something for you to help get rid of the itchy/burning/pain that comes with peeing. Not fun...

You could do the all natural way too. I think its cranberry juice thats good for it. But make sure its NOT sweetened, it has to be 100% cran juice. But I'd still go to the dr before medicating yourself.

Poo. It would be a 4 hour wait on a weekend to see anyone at a walk in clinic... and that's the only option I have. :(

Well, I have yeast infections quite frequently...and have since I was a teen and I've had 2 since getting pregnant. I always just do monistat over the counter and it clears it right up. But I know the symptoms and all...if it were my first I might try and see a doc just to make sure it isn't a uti or anything else.

Since you've never had a yeast infection before, I agree with Darcy that you should see a doctor. It could be something else.

That said, OTC treatments do work for most women. Others need a prescription, others just use natural remedies. Sarah mentioned yogurt with live/active cultures. Eating it is great, applying it to the infection...even better. No, really. It sounds pretty gross, but the yogurt really does work. Not only does it treat that infection, it reduces any itching and burning too. Feels gross on, works like a charm. And definitely take some acidophilus!

I buy the 3 day ones, the 1 day one doesn't work. But since you have never had one, I would be inclined to go to the doctor first and have them see for sure. I have had plenty and been to the doctor the first few times before I knew what they were.

Gross, but true.

My nephews wife thought she had a yeast infection and it turned out to be something else entirely from her using scented tampons. She had to take antibiotics and use some yucky brown ointment. Better to have it checked out

I would have it checked out to be sure.. I haven't had one in a long time, but man do they suck. I've used the Monistat 3 day before too.

Wow I didnt know about putting yogurt on it, thats kinda cool, gross but cool LOL. Im easily amused.

I'm with the crowd on this one. For the first one you should really see a doctor/nurse practitioner. I've had a number of yeast infections in my years. Not fun. But even less fun is delaying treatment (I did that once in grad school when I was short on money and it was not a smart move). Monistat works on the yeast infection and it's great that they have the 3-day version nowadays (the 7-day was truly annoying).
But the key is also not just reassuring yourself that that's really what you have, but also determining the cause so you can avoid one in the future. For a lot of us, the cause is taking antibiotics which kills all bacteria including the good kind that keeps us "in balance" down there. And most of us who have been plagued with these have learned to eat yogurt when we are on antibiotics to restore the good bacteria. Another cause is sex with our male partner who has an active yeast infection (usually for the same reason as above). But I've understood that there are some conditions out there that present themselves similarly as yeast infections and while using the Monistat won't do any harm, the delay of treatment might.
Bring a good book with you to the clinic....and best of luck to you...

Ya know, it seems like I saw a yeast infection commercial not too long ago that said something about having a test kit in the pack to see if that's really what it is. (I'm assuming it shows up easily if that's what it is.) If the wait at a clinic would really be that long, this may be an option for you.

I'll go try to look it up and see if I can find what I was thinking of...

I never went to a doctor for my first, I just bought the over the counter stuff and it cleared it up. If you really cant get to a clinic then you could try the stuff yourself and go to a doc on Monday if it hasn't cleared up.

there are a lot things that need to be ruled out with thinking about first yeast infection.....

It is not worth risking. I would try an over the counter test or a monostat type med if you cant get in to the Dr soon. And give them a call on Monday.

Okay, so I did go to the clinic, had to wait 2 hours. The doctor was an OLD man, and he didn't want to give me an exam or anything. He just said - you have a bladder infection, and gave me an RX. I dunno. Itching, burning and white discharge sounded like a yeast infection to me. If its not clearing up in a few days, I'll look for treatment with the test kit!

It has already been said, but applying the yogurt directly to it works very well (WAY better than eating it although you can eat it too).

oh, hmm, just noticed your reply and about the bladder infection??!! Strange, cause a bladder infection (I thought) made you feel like you always had to pee and when you go it hurts, etc. Well, anyways, I hope you get better soon! None of the above are very fun :(
