Has anyone very pulled a muscle between their ribs??!! I have been in pain since Friday -- it hurts to move, to pick anything up, even to breathe!! OUCH!

Any idea how long this'll last? and anything I can do to make it hurt less (hot? cold?)? It's a little better in the mornings but then gets worse again by the end of the day.

no, never had anything like this before and the strange thing is that I don't even know how it happened! I went to the gym last week and did my usual stuff, but was it the elliptical? the situps? the weights? I have no idea!

(not trying to scare you) you may have displaced a rib. i would get it checked out just to confirm your diagnosis. if it is displaced there is not much they can/will do but at least you'll know what's going on and what you can do in the interim to get better and help with the pain.

I've never done it, but I know people who have and it's apparenty ridiculously painful. Moreso than breaking a rib a lot of times, from what I understand. I agree with Lizzy that you should get it looked into, just to make sure you know exactly what's going on and that's all it is.

I was going to suggest the chyropractor too... it sounds to me like you have a rib out and they can work wonders these days.

Never heard of a displaced rib before, but it sounds painful! Hope the meds help and that you won't have to go in to see a doctor.

I don't think you have pulled a muscle, I think your spine is misaligned causing one of your ribs to be pushing hard on that muscle. Go see a chiropractor and your pain will go away. I promise.

Dawn, I have costochondritis in my left chest area. It started out feeling like you're describing..as if it's a pulled muscle. Mine went on for weeks and I finally went to the doc. After a ton of tests to rule out more serious stuff, this is what he diagnosed me with. The bad thing about it is that there's really nothing you can do except hope it will heal. Mine was very bad about this time last year. Right now thankfully it hasn't flared up recently. At it's worst I feel like someone is stabbing a knife in my ribcage, I have chest pains and sometimes shortness of breath. If you keep hurting I would definately get it checked out b/c they can give you something that will help with the pain.

that's no fun! i hope you feel better soon! definitely get it checked. personally, i wouldn't go to the chiropracter until you know what is wrong with it. You don't want a chiropracter adjusting a rib if it's broken or anything.

When I was pregant with my younger daughter, I stretched all the muscles in/around my ribcage. So, after I gave birth to her, I had horrendous pain as the muscles were trying to heal. I seriously couldn't take a deep breath and regular breathing even hurt. It was awful. I lived on Ibuprofen.

I was going to suggest a chiropractor as well. I once displaced one of my ribs and it felt sooo much like what you're describing and a friend of mine who is a chiropractor made me feel so so much better in a jiffy!

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Update: I am feeling SOOOO much better today. It's still a tiny bit sore, but I'm pretty much back to normal. So, I'm gonna take it easy for a few more days and hope that it doesn't act back up when I head back to the gym. Thanks for all the advice, ladies!

Glad you're feeling better Dawn. DH has displaced some ribs before and he was in terrible pain. Going to the chiropractor helped him 100%.
