Scanners?

So, I'm thinking about asking for a new scanner for Christmas. It would be primarily for photos--possibly negatives. But I don't want that to be my main gift, so it needs to be cheap.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Our scanner is probably 10 years old (hand me down from the parents...), only scans at 200ppi and has so many "permanent" specs on the underside of the glass that the scans are just not great. I've had some negatives put on CD at CVS and was surprised at the difference in color, so that would be a nice option as well.

Thanks. :)

I need a new one too..I wonder if there is such a thing as a small "photo size scanner" kwim?...I have one of those big bulky 3 in 1 printer/copier things but I don't have it connected to my laptop b/c it's just too much trouble..I'd love a more portable type scanner just for smallish pics maybe up to 5x7...I don't know if it exists but if it doesn't it should lol :)

I've got a CanoScan LiDe 3.0 (it's about 5 years old now), but I really actually like it, it's small (a flatbed scanner, no extras, just a scanner).

A couple years ago I was looking at the Epson ones, they had one that did negatives and slides, and also had this little contraption on it that if you stacked like 100 4x6 photos on it, it would pull them in one by one and scan them, I thought that was REALLY cool. But I never bought it and now I can't find them, lol.

OK, ed-u-ma-cate this dummy, why would you scan negatives? Can you use the scanned ones to print from?

It basically works like when you take your film in to a photo center and they make prints - it scans it and then you can (or maybe it does it automatically?) change it to color. But the bonus part is that now your previously outdated system (negatives) are digital. Nice! :)

Wow! I hadn't heard of scanning negatives before. Learn something new every day. lol

I use the scanner on my HP All-In-One and I think the quality on it is great. I actually didn't even know people were still buying separate scanners these days. *paper bag on head*

I'm following this thread as well. I really need a scanner, and I definitely want one that does negatives. Thanks for the suggestions, and keep them coming!
