Remember when...

well, those of you younger than 30 may not remember...but remember when The Wizard of Oz only came on once a year and how big a deal that was...I remember my mom would mark it on the calendar weeks in advance and we'd literally count down the days until it was on. No VCR's back then so you only got one shot to see it for a whole year. That's such a good memory...my Daddy would pop real popcorn - as in in an old fashioned pop corn popper...no such thing as microwave popcorn..or even microwaves lol...We did the same thing with Gone With the Wind.. good times :)

Sorry..this ramble down memory lane was inspired by DS watching The Wizard of Oz 6 times in a row...lol

YES!!! I was just telling my kids about this the other day cause we were talking about Wizard of Oz. My dd (age 10) was baffled. She said "why didn't you just record it?" haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Oh I remember that too!! The Sound of Music was another one that came on only once a year and it was also one of my favorites!!

hey I'm under 30 and remember wizard of oz coming on tv being a big deal when I Was lil

lol...well I just remember by the time my youngest bro and sis came along in the 80's we had a vcr so we were able to record it by then so they got to watch it whenever they wanted...I guess I should say 30ish :)

I used to love watching it on TV! It was always shown on CBS wasn't it? Then Ted Turner bought the rights to it. We have it on DVD but hardly ever watch it.

I kinda remember that. I was born in 76 and we got a Beta machine...I think thats what it was called. It was the pre-cursor to the VCR. I remember watching The Sound of Music and Wizard of Oz on tv though.

Yes! Watching Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Gone With the Wind...only once a year. It was so special. Sometimes I hate how easy it is to see whatever you want now. My kids think pausing live TV, On Demand, and recording are totally natural. Kinda sad in a way...

I so remember this!!! Such a great memory. Our family would look forward to this too. I loved the Wizard of Oz and the Sound of Music! We also got the Beta VCR when it first came out and thought we were really up town! HAAAA!

I remember that! We used to look forward to the Wizard of Oz and the Sound of Music every year. I remember feeling like it was the end of an era when they stopped that yearly showing. By then we'd had a VCR for many years and could have bought them on tape, but it just wasn't the same.

YES!!!!! My husband and I were just talking about this. Our oldest (12) couldn't believe it - it wasn't on DVD, she said lol

Oh, you betcha. Also, when there was no color tv and just three networks, lol. When PBS came on board too, even that was a big deal :P
Kids today are spoiled, but they're lucky too.

Oh do I remember those days and I'm older than you. That was probably the only time in the year that my mom got peace and quit from 4 kids. :D

Vaguely remember that but the Wizard of Oz movie still creeps me out to this day so I try to avoid it as much as possible.

We had a Beta machine too!

Too funny! I totally remember that! And beta machines! LOL!! Those were all the craze for a quick minute! LOL!! Does anyone remember laserdiscs? LOL!

I remember when it used to come on once a year and it was a BIG deal in our house!! I also remember when The Sound of Music would come on too - same big deal at our house!! =))

yes, and I remember in 1989 when it was a HUGE deal that it was it's 50th anniversary...there was a huge to-do about it. I remember sitting in the living room floor (I was 9 at the time) enthralled because it was the first time I had seen it. I hadn't seen it before that because we grew up overseas and they didn't show it on AFN, the only station we had.

that was my favorite movie of all time most of my life! LOL It was an epic event in our house when it came on yearly. Matter of fact I think it was the first DVD I ever bought. I LOVE that movie, but you're right, it has lost a bit of it's specialness now with such instant availability. (LOl we had a beta machine too btw, rofl)

Oh and on a side note ... anyone else like me and only see the TV version for GREASE for forever and then watch it on DVD and realize just what a dirty movie it was? ROFL

It was a big event for us too...well me anyway ( I have 3 brothers :D ) We would always be at my Grandmothers house and no one was allowed to speak unless it was a commercial.
