can someone explain the facebook privacy options?

I'm finding more and more of my local friends are using facebook and I'm considering joining. I've been a long time holdout on this just because I haven't really wanted anyone to find me on there - I'm not hiding out from a secret past or anything (LOL) but I seriously do not want friends from high school seeking me out.

So what are my options and how does it work? I join and that gets me what - a page I can put stuff on, right? Can I restrict who sees my page? If someone searches by my name will they see I'm a member but not my page?

well gee THANKS L, I appreciate you taking the time to post and mock me but NOT taking the time to answer my question. Hmpf. Mental note: block L on facebook.....:D

you can chose who you accept as your friends, if that helps. And if memory serves me correctly, when they type your name, all they can see is your name and your photo, and options to send you a message or add you as a friend, when you have your settings set correctly. I can't remember how to do it, it's been a while and I have far too many people on my friends list. lol

*picking self off floor*

If someone is in the same network as you, i.e. Indianapolis or Purdue, then they can see your page with or without your permission, so you should be all privated up with only friends that you choose to accept seeing your page so long as you don't pick a network to be a part of.

I know for sure that you can make your photo albums on there viewable by friends only since I do that with all mine.

HTH! Can't wait to be your FB friend, E!! I better be the first one, too!

ok I think that helps, I just wanted to make sure I had a choice as to who can view my page. :)

ok so don't join networks, that's first.

another question - should I skip filling in my high school, college and work information if I don't want people looking me up by those?

Yup.

Just fill out the things that are asterisked/required and go from there, dear.

Then do a search for me, ask to be my friend, and then you can look through my hundreds of Friends and find all the scrappy people and ask them to be YOUR friends.

I have a feeling L is going to be seriously wounded if I do not befriend her asap. :D

I will find you L. I'm not terribly concerned with finding all the scrappy people because I can chat with all of them HERE, I'm doing this more for local friends.....but who knows - possibly I will become a huge facebook ho and befriend everyone I've ever met everywhere.....

let me tell you about my most recent facebook experience - my 15 year old was on my computer Sunday checking his messages on facebook and crashed my computer with a virus. so no more facebook on my computer. hubby says it's just as bad as myspace. am on hubby's laptop right now while he works on my computer. :(

The best part, E, is that you will be able to chat with me with the Facebook IM program so we can talk throughout the day like we did on Y!M. :)

It is official. I *am* the last person on earth to join. I just found the minister of my church......:D

LOL Emmy!!! I love Facebook. Never had any problems with it, and I haven't had anyone from high school track me down. :)

The best part is that you can accept people's invitations and then later delete them and they'll never know. It's really a great plan. That way you don't have to hurt their feelings by rejecting them but you still don't have to be their friend.

You CAN join a network and set it up so the whole network can't see it. You can also block certain friends from seeing things too. For example, if you post some photos of your kids, but you don't want all of your friends to see them, you can select what friends can see them and what friends can't.

I have had several high school people track me down, and I hate being rude and not accepting them as friends, but the option to block them from my photos and other stuff made it easier.

Kelly, so let me get this right. If you delete someone from being your friend, they don't know it? Doesn't that remove you from their friend list? How does that work?

Bossy little thing, isn't she? LOL :p

I have been hearing more and more about Facebook. I've thought about it........but haven't created an account yet.
