My lil' Allie is sick. :( This is the first time she's ever been sick, so I'm going to need some advice. She has a fever (about 101) and I've given her Tylenol which has brought that down. She refuses to eat and I'm worried she is going to get dehydrated. She also won't sleep longer than about 1-2 hours (man, was my night fun.....). I'm not sure what to do for her! HELP! :(

ETA: She's 11 months old.

Oh, and I have an exam today. YIKES! This is not good.

maybe a pedialtye pop (it's a popsicle).. since she won't eat or drink. Does she like popsicles? She might also need to hang out in the bath (warmish water--closer to cool then hot) if her fever comes back and needs help dropping.
 
Poor baby! I have no advice as my 3 1/2 y/o has never been sick a day in his life (knock on wood)...just wanted to say hope she's better soon!
 
Pedialyte is good and they make them in popsicle form. Could she have an ear infection?
 
Oh, no! Poor little one. (And poor Mommy, given your night and exam.) Remind me--how old is she? I don't think she's a real little one, but if she is we'd obviously give different advice than if she's older.
 
pedialyte pops or straight pedialyte. If she has diarhea or vomiting it is really important to keep them hydrated to help replace the fluids. You should not really worry as much about food though because you can go awhile without eating. it is the fluids you need to worry about. 101 doesnt seem that high to me. My pediatrician always told me the fever isnt as much a worry as how the child is behaving with the fever and what other symptoms there are. If you are particularly worried though a visit to the docotr or even a walk-in clinic would help ease your mind Im sure. Hope she feels better soon!!

ETA: Also just sipping on water is good. Any fluids you can get her to take is good so long as she does not have diarhea. Then you want to avoid things like apple juice. If she has a cough with phlem avoid orange juice and dairy products.
 
Sorry one more thing...my pediatrician also recomended fever-all suppositories to bring a fever down quicker but that is something youd wanna check with your doctor about. They also sell those cooling pads that stick to the childs forehead and help them feel more comfortable
 
Aww, sorry your little one is sick, hugs to you! Don't fret too much, 101 really isn't that high and as long as you can get some fluids in her don't worry about the food thing. I think at that age you can alternate tylonel and children's motrin every 2 hours but I'd call your ped just to be sure. I definitley would get some pedialyte in her if you can at least.

It's so scary when they get sick the first time, my ds was 6 months and got the worst vomiting bug ever, I was so scared we were ready to call 911 but the ped's nurse talked us off the edge! LOL!

It sounds like she may have an ear infection if she won't sleep cause laying down hurts. Is she pulling on her ears or yanking at them? It doesn't always show a sure sign as my 2nd had ear infections constantly and the only way we knew was that he would spike a fever, he was happy and eating and sleeping otherwise.

Just call the doc and see what they say and don't worry too much! (yah, that's really easy huh?) Hugs!
 
I wouldn't worry too much about the fever.. 101 is not that high, and the fever itself isn't bad... Does she cry when you lay her down? If she does, it might be her ears.
 
No, not pulling at her ears. She is all sniffly though... she probably caught what I had last week. I had a cold. Sounds like I need to send DH out to get some Pedialyte!
 
Luckily 101 isn't too high (though I'm sure that isn't what it seems like to you!). My peds have always said they worry a lot more about a child's behavior and reaction to the medicine than aything else. If she's acting like her normal self (even a cranky version) and isn't lethargic plus the medicine brought the fever down, she's probably doing okay.

At 11 months old she's probably more likely to want to nurse or have a bottle than do solids or popsicles, so try liquids but don't stress too much if she's not interested. Since it's her first fever I'd go ahead and call the peds to let them know and get their advice, including what signs or temperature would warrant an office visit. Also remember that fevers tend to be highest in the early evening, so there's a good chance it will go up later.

Also, I would try pedialyte in a bottle or the popsicles. My ped has also had me give the kids watered down gatorade.. pedialyte tastes awful, tbh. I wouldn't mess w/ formula just in case she throws up.
 
is she teething? My girls always ran high fevers when cutting teeth.

Try Pedialyte or Gatorade to keep her hydrated (I prefer gatorade..)

don't use the Feverall if you use Tylenol recently b/c they are both acetaminophin (tylenol)

You can alternate infant tylenol with infant motrin if the tylenol alone doesn't seem to work (I do that when Ryleigh teeths)

Ohh yes fever-all is the same as tylenol so defenitely dont give it to her now. I only suggest that if she is vomiting or wont take the meds because it is a suppository and wont cause the vomiting. Ummm one more thing to watch for...as far as dehydration goes watch her diapers. If she continues to wet her diaper like she normally would that is a good sign. Those things for the fore-head work so well. My neice got a bad fever when I was babysitting and I had to have my sister come get her from work and she bought those and they stick even while they are sleeping and they do really help break the fever I think. In the thirty minutes before she left my house she was already cooler and feeling a little better.
 
I remember being SO worried when bugga had her first cold, which was right about the same age as your sweetie.

The other girls are right about the fever, no need to worry about one that high after 6 months...and if it's responding to the tylenol that's good. I found that Motrin (which is ok after 6 mos) often worked better, so you could try that as well.

Definitely just keep pushing fluids as best you can. Watch her diapers. And know that you will get through this to the other side. If you have to, baby vapo rub is good and there's also saline you can use to flush her nose if you need to. Also do you have a humidifier? If she's congested, that can help her when she's sleeping. Or just sitting with her in a steamy bathroom for awhile.

Thanks gals! Lots of great advice. I know we need a humidifier, so I'll pick one up later today. Allie's right eye started swelling up and has been dripping nonstop so we called the ped and DH just took her in to get checked out. I know she'll be okay, but it is so heartbreaking to see my little sweetheart so sad.

And thank heaven for female professors! I emailed two of my instructors and one is letting me take my exam on Monday instead of today and the other is letting me turn in my case brief on Sunday through email... such a relief since i got NO SLEEP!
