I stayed up late watching your election last night, and I want to say that despite the outcome, whether it was the way you wanted it to go or not, have faith they will do what's best for all of you. We recently had an election, and our Prime Minister is not someone I wanted in there, but I took some time and thought about it, and well, I can't change it now. There's nothing I can do, and sitting around feeling sad won't help. So I just have to hope and pray that he does what's best for us. It is scary to put your faith in someone you don't trust.

I for one, am glad it's over. I am a Canuck in a mostly American internet world, and it will be nice to see some of the angry bickering I've seen, come to an end. I have witnessed online friendships broken over this, and it makes me sad.

Peace and love y'all. I really hope all of this ends up being productive for your country. I know some of you are positive Obama brings change, and some of you are positive this is the slippery slope to nowhere, but I am hopeful he lands somewhere in the middle of the road.

And, I'm interested to know how the gay marriage ballots did, if anyone can tell me?
 
From what I can gather, the same-sex marriage ban passed in all 3 states it was presented in - California, Florida and Arizona.

The Personhood Ammendment in Colorado was rejected.
 
The election didn't go the way I was hoping but what can you do. Like you said Jamie there isn't anything you can do now...what's done is done. I hate politics and I usually don't get into discussions about it unless I know the other person feels similar to me. Everyone has their own opinions about things and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. This world would be a pretty boring place if we all felt the same and had the same beliefs. :) I pray that regardless of how I feel that things work out and he can prove me wrong. You were right too when you said that it is hard to put my faith in someone I don't trust. Faith is something that is earned so in time...:) It is sad to think that people have lost friendships over this election. My MIL is one of those people that has her opinions and goes WAY OVER BOARD with it. She will go on and on even if she doesn't know half of what she is talking about. LOL But it's her way and that is just the "right" way...if someone else has a different opinion?...well that is just wrong. That isn't the way to be.

okay, tell me why some people are so obsessed with preventing same sex marriages?? what does it have to do with them? they don't have to like it, they don't have to become best friends with an gay couple. who the heck cares! why can't they have the same rights? its just so stupid. i'm not gay (lol obviously) but i'm very open minded and i think its unfair that two people can't get married just because they are the same sex. Love is Love.

hope i'm not stepping on any toes. i'll step off my soapbox now.
 
Corey- for me the issue of same sex marriage goes against the foundation of my marriage and of my faith. But that is my belief.

And Jamie- thanks for your post!
 
It truly saddens me that the same sex bans were passed.

Whether or not it goes against your religion is irrelevant. It's not a religious issue, it's a rights issue.

Here are my reasons for supporting Prop 8 in California. I won't debate anyone, just wanted to share where I stand:

1. Churches will be sued if they refuse to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies.
2. Religious adoption agencies will be challenged by government agencies to give up their long-held right to place children only in homes with both a mother and a father.
3. Religions that sponsor private schools and which provide housing for married students will be required to provide housing for same-sex couples, even if it runs counter to church doctrine or lose tax exemptions and benefits.
4. Ministers who preach against same-sex marriages will be sued for hate speech and could be fined by the government.

I love gay people, and I feel bad for the predicament that they are in. But, my religious beliefs come first in my life, and if my beliefs are challenged by the government, then that is WRONG. Religious freedom is the number one reason why this country was founded, and I'll fight for it until the end.

That's exactly how I feel. It think this is a religious issue that has NO place in government. It looks like in California it passed. What frustrates me the most is that they brought schools into the issue. WE do NOT teach hetero marriage, why would we teach homosexual marriage?

exactly. i can kinda understand the religous aspect, but then it goes back to why it bothers someone how a person you don't know choose to live their life.

again, i love that everyone on this site can debate/talk like this without it getting mean. i respect everyones beliefs and its nice that we can express them openly!

But I think it IS, if my minister will be sued for preaching against it...

So we have different opinions on what religious freedom is...I get that.

Now I'm going back into my lurking-political-threads-hole. ;)

Col, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I think your PE exam will be 2 days long. We had a friend who just took it in Cali--16 hours! Why would it be twice as long as here? Crazy.

CA has a different test ENTIRELY. Because of earthquakes and such. So I'm not surprised that test is a 2 day test.

Wow, that article made me sad :( Future generations being tainted by same-sex unions? I am actually in tears that this is how some people think. You are entitled to you opinion, but the outcome of the states that have ruled marriage as only between a man and woman truly saddens me :(

I honestly feel exactly what you said. It may not be the outcome I want, but there's nothing I can do about it and I want him to be a successful president and I want good things to come of this, so I can accept it.

Agreed. I made the mistake of opening the "depressed" thread and I really wish I hadn't. I'll be glad when we can just go back to being a fun scrapping community and not have all this negativity and sadness surrounding us. :wub:

I'm right there with you. I'm rather disappointed in my home state of CA today. For a state that is normally so progressive, I think this is a huge step backward. :(

I totally agree Jamie, give the guy a chance, he's not in office yet. I don't think it can get much worse than the state our country is in....he's already given many people hope and broke barriers. The whole world is watching us.

I'm disappointed about Prop 8, any married couple pays taxes and their due. It's sad that we're so judgemental and who and who can't be married.

What I love most about this election is that my older kids (age 6 and 9) didn't even think about the skin color of Obama or the sex of Sarah Palin in deciding who to vote for. Yeah for progress.

I laughed when I heard that even at the first grade level, dirty politics were at play - my daughter was told that Obama would make them go to school in the summer if he got in. I just wish politics was more about who would be the best at governing and less about who is the worst person on the planet.

I do wish that the equality that my children see was the state of the union and hope that they will be part of making it true in their lifetime.
 
Hey did you see how it went here in North Carolina? Too close to call. I tell you, us conservatives worked hard down here and fought tooth and nail to the bitter end. Cause that's how us southerners roll LOL. Thank you for your condolences Jamie (not congrats in my case). We love our neighbors to the north! You're a sweetheart. I agree that I'll be glad to see the bickering stop. I might even consider visiting DST more than once a month now. LOL

LOL. I volunteered in my son's K today and one of the kids was so upset because her parents told her that Obama was going to come to their house and take away all their money. And then, they might have to MOVE and be POOR.

I'm all for teaching kids about politics, but COME ON, let's show a little judgment people!
 
No on Prop 8 is already in the middle of filing an appeal. It's eliminating a right, why are heterosexuals allowed to get married, but homosexuals not? An adult is an adult, no matter what their sexual preference.

great post...and even thought I didn't vote and I do not really follow politics I thought McCain and Obama's speeches were equally GREAT...I am glad of the outcome {just my personal opinion :)} and I do hope that people will be open minded and give him a chance to prove himself...I believe he does have the potential to be a great president...just my 2 cents...not even going there with the gay rights thing :)
