No More Digital Scrapbooking magazine

I hate it but frankly, I'm not surprised. It was too geared to "newbies". Everytime I would glance at it in the store I would think "I could learn more on my boards" and the layouts all eventually turn up on the boards too, so whats' the point? Not to MENTION their CS issues they've had from day 1. It's sad though because in time it could have had the potential to evolve into something special.

Well that was good timing... I just decided not to renew my subscription. Its like they never could figure out their target audience & how to reach them.

I was kind of disappointed in the mag myself.....I thought i would learn all kinds of cool new techniques and stuff, but the magazine just seemed to be all about the layouts and very little about "How To....."

I thought the same thing too.....it was a great idea but never truly evolved.

I told my DH not to renew it this year, because I felt I got more from the sites I went to and from the paper scrapping mags than that one... So I guess perfect timing.

Glad I didn't renew my subscription! I don't want to bash it, but I certainly have enjoyed DAM a whole lot more! :)

Yeah makes me glad I ignored the renewal notices I've been getting! I just got the Dec/Jan issue within the last week or so and it's pitifully thin - like only 90 pages. I haven't looked through it too much yet, in fact I don't think I've even read the last few issues I've received! My subscription is only through the Apr/May issue so I guess I'm only out 1 issue so no big loss for me.

Well I can't say that I'm surprised since I never renewed my subscription after the first year and I'm pretty sure a lot of other people didn't either. I did pick one up over the summer when I was on vacation and of all the scrap mags I bought, it was by far my least favorite and took the least time to read.

I just don't think they ever really got what the digi community was all about. It always just felt like it was more written from the view of what the paper world thought digi was or should be rather than what it actually is.

It wasn't my fave but I do still have a subscription left with many months on it.

They said this on their website: "Current subscriptions will be honored, and will be filled with CK Media product."

That's NOT acceptable to me. I already get Creating Keepsakes and I don't WANT anything else from them. I only want the rest of my money back.

I subscribe from the business aspect of things because I want to see what's going on, etc. Having advertised with them over the summer with a 1/2 page ad, I will tell you that they likey did not have the advertising needed to keep the publication running. They never really "got" that the advertisers in digital arent the same as the HUGE companies in the paper world. We're fortunate that we were in a position to try and advertise in DSM to reach new customers - however, I know their price point is not an option for many stores just starting out which is unfortunate as those small business are the ones our community is founded on.

Anyhow a little blah blah from me :)

I, too, let my sub run up...which is totally out of character for me. I learned WAY more with the Vol 1 and Vol 2 Computer Secrets for Scrapbooking (? name) by Jessica and the BH&G Guides 1 & 2 to Digital SBing.

So true, Robin. I remember when they first took over DSM to turn it into a print magazine from what April Anderton started it as...and I literally laughed at their advertising prices. It was just so ridiculous for an industry like this one - but they didn't seem to understand that. And then their ad prices went up not long after that. It makes it hard for the digital communities to support the magazine when it's put so far out of reach for most.

I will miss having a physical magazine to hold in my hands since that's how I read mags. I'm just a touchy feely person that way LOLOL.

But other than the advertising that Robin mentioned, they also didn't know that there was WAY more to the digi world other than 2 stores.

Hmmm, I wonder when my subscription runs out, I hope it's before the mag does cause I already get Simple Scrapbooks and CK magazines so there isn't much else for them to send me! LOL!

I love physical magazines, and can't be bothered with digital ones. Though I really suppose I need to buy one soon... I just can't sit around at my computer and read something like that, and LOVE having a paper mag to take to doctors appts, read in bed, etc. I got the first year, but found one-two ideas in each issue I could use. Not a great inspiration for me. It doesn't surpise me it's 'over' for them...

I think another large problem for them is that they work so far in advance - by the time the magazines come out the trend has come and gone and the rest of us are on to the next thing. The digital world moves a LOT faster than the paper world because we are releasing new products DAILY instead of only certain times of the year, and so designers are constantly trying to stay ahead of the trends.

i just subscribed a few months ago and have only gotten two issues and have been really disappointed in it for the reasons everyone else has already mentioned. I already get CK and don't know if I want anything else either. I guess I'll see what customer service says in December...

I haven't been able to find it at Target or Walmart for several months now!

I never bought one but I liked to browse in the store. I also prefer a physical magazine, but yeah, never got into this one!

I'm really glad I ignored the renewal notices I've been getting. They were getting a little pushy and I just wasn't liking the mag anymore. I'll just have to subscribe to CK or Simple. Or maybe Memory Makers. Something different.

I'm glad I didn't send in my renewal notices. I liked the magazine but I hated how thin it was.

Oh well...I get more out of Scrapbooks Etc anyway LOL. I subscribed to DSM when it first came out, but they never managed to get an issue to our house, so I cancelled and got my money back. Suffice it to say I've been disappointed in their CS; and I have to admit I got tired of seeing the same designer's kits in every single issue.

I'm not broken-hearted. I had major CS issues with them the first year, too, and didn't renew my subscription.

My biggest complaint about DSM is that it TOTALLY ignored our cottage industry. Every issue had layouts with product by just a few of the usual suspects, Shabby Princess (who I love), etc, but they never really understood or included TONS of product and artists that we are all familiar with in the community. Also, they loaded it up with lots of writers/editors that were popular at 2 Peas and CK, but they were vaguely known by the vast majority of us here (Renee Pearson, Angie Svoboda, Molly Newman, etc). There should have been a better mix that better represented the community as a whole.

That said, I think ultimately, their inability to sell advertising killed them. Sure, they had ads from Epson and whatnot but it just wasn't enough, and their pricing was not doable for most shops and independent designers.

I had a project in this month's issue (page 35 if you get the mag). They paid REALLY well too - so I'm bummed that I can't submit to them anymore :(

I never renewed my subscription, I thought it was total crap for the money they were asking.

They should just gear a section of their regular scrapping mags to digital and make everyone happy.

They tried that once...the paper scrappers FREAKED out, lol. They didn't want any pages of "their" precious CK magazine put toward something as lowly as digital. :glare:

I'm clearly in the minority, but I'm going to miss it. I need some paper mags to read while I wait to pick up the kids. I know DSM wasn't all that it could be and the ideas in the paper scrapping mags are just as good, but I just liked having a digi one to flip through.

That said, I think it's crazy that they've still been sending renewal notices. They obviously knew this was coming, why were they still sending them? I just got one a few days ago, and if I'd had a few extra minutes today I would have stopped by the post office and mailed it. I would have been extremely mad if I'd renewed a mag that was going to send me NO new issues and instead would substitute something of their choice.

No big loss. I withdrew my subscription after going several months without it only to have another month credited to my account.
