If you had ONE HOUR...

...to introduce a group of ladies to digi scrap... how would you do it? I got volunteered to do a litte "how-to" night for church. Lots of ladies want me to teach them how I do what I do and so they just thought we should make a church activity out of it. LOL! So how should I organize the night? Pass around printed albums first? Or put them on a table and let them look after I'm done talking? I definitely need to go through a very long list of WHY digi scrap is so awesome. AND I'll be burning CDs for all the ladies with one of my kits on it so I know I'll have to give them a quick "no piracy" rundown so they're not going around sharing my kit (it will be an AWESOME kit that will be for sale to others... ;) ). I'll also do some Word docs with a few beginner tutorials and links to my fave scrap sites. Hmmmm.... ideas?

Sounds great! I'd start by showing them your LOs, either printed or on screen, so that they have a good idea what digiscrapping is, are motivated to do it, and you can conquer any 'digi isn't as good as paper' notions right off the bat.

Maybe make a short-ish list of the benefits of digi-scrapping.

Things like.... its cheaper, faster, better creative outlet, less mess/clutter, etc.

Those are the kinds of things that will get them initially hooked.

I guess they would all need to know about the programs right? Do they all know how to use ps or psp or any of the other ones? Where to get stuff printed and just techniques for a layout..shadowing?

I guess it would depend on whether the women are paper-scrappers or beginners to scrapping in general. Sounds like you have alot of good ideas though

Some links to help them get started, i.e. Adobe so they can download a free trial of PSE, some beginning tutorial links, links to a couple of stores you can recommend.

You may also want to show quick pages as an option for those getting started.

Yeah, I was going to talk about programs. This will be a very varied group of ladies.... some paper scrappers, some don't scrap at all, all different ages, some tech savvy and some not-so-much.

I would also make a quick tutorial for them and include a finished layout (a simple one) and show screenshots of each step of the layout. KWIM?

Give some suggestions of where to get started with some freebies to make sure it is something they want to do before investing any money in it.

Also some nice communities (of course SSD would be top on the list LOL) that they can get involved in.

Id explain about scrap-lifting and how it can help a person who is new to scrapping and also of course about the importance of crediting if the layout is posted to any galleries. While talking about lifting Id also mention templates and how they can help those who are stuck or just learning to make layouts.

Been there and done that!! I printed an information sheet out that I digi-scrapped of course. LOL And then showed them how to do a LO from start to finish. I talked about the pros of digi-scrapping and then answered any questions that they had for me. They loved seeing me create a LO from scratch.

ETA: My information sheet had the various programs and where they could download a trial copy. It also included links to stores where they could purchase stuff as well as freebie sites. It also had sites for tutorials. Then I talked pros of digi-scrapping and did the LO.

I'd show them your printed pages first.

Also, be sure to include all the printing places out there. That was one of the reasons I held off for so long, because I had no idea how to get my pages off the computer.

I agree about showing the printed pages first and where to print them!! I still LOVE it when I get my layouts in the mail!

Also, maybe include a template or something along those lines. That helped me so much when I first started, b/c I didn't have to "design" the page on my own--just had to find papers and elements that I liked!

Fabulous idea! I didn't even think of including a template or two. Der. lol

My friend Alane (Marnie4two) and Nancy (doesn't post here) did an information intro meeting for our Mom's Morning group at church a little over a year ago. They were able to have the tech guy at our church hook up a projector to their laptop and they each demonstrated how to do a quick layout. Alane did a "from scratch" layout and Nancy demonstrated one with a template. They briefly talked about program options, Alane used Paint Shop Pro and Nancy had PSE (I believe). They really stress the "no mess" part since most of these mom's have young children like us.

I did some behind the scene work and got gift cards for door prizes and coupons for all the mom's to use. One designer gave a kit (the mom's got an email after the class with the link)

They gave out a packet with links to tutorials, shops, forums and galleries. The packet also had info about no file sharing, and storage of your pictures, layouts, digital supplies, ect.

On display were some of my hybrid projects & albums (since many of them already paper scrap) They had a slideshow running of their digital pages and then a Shutterfly album (I believe)

That was confusing to me too!

sounds like you've got the right ideas already. Definitely give them a list of resources like tutorial sites, shoppes and printing sites. I think you should start with a printed example, whether you pass it around or each one gets their own printed page is up to you. This way they have it in their hands while you are explaining. I think the hardest part for people completely new to digi is just HOW it works. Many people understand traditional paper scraping but can't wrap their minds around doing it on the pc and not having all the paper and glue in front of you. LOL I always start with layers when I am teaching someone. They need to figure out how to manage the many layers and then I think shadows, before they get into effects and everything else.

I always link newbies up to Jessica Sprague and Misty Cato and Sweet Shoppe.

Printed pages are a must! Especially for die-hard paper scrappers who think digi isn't real scrapping. Grrr.

Some quick gift type things for those who will want to continue to paper scrap but can see the advantages of digi scrap for mini albums, gifts, etc.

Focus on how much money they can save. Those chicks can be a little frugal, iykwim.

Unfortunately, with SSD gearing up for the new year and giving our challenges a little vacay, you can't send them here for the fun challenges. So, maybe you can create a challenge of your own...maybe they can get a GC for your stuff once they've created so many pages or something.

I can't think of anything else to add I just wanted to say Good Luck. Hopefully you can "convert them all to the dark side";)

Have fun with it! Everyone posted some great ideas :)

Definitely give them a template or two, that's great for everyone.

I have no ideas. Just wanted to say it sounds super cool! LOL! I totally agree about the printing though. I had no idea what to do with all my stuff and only like a month or so ago got my first pages printed.

Misty's tuts are a must too I think. She has some super helpful stuff there!

LOTS of awesome input! Thanks, ladies! I knew I could count on you! ;) I'll start putting together a comparison sheet for different printing places... books or single pages.

Hey Megan! I am getting ready to do one of these as well... so I am wondering how it went. What worked? What didn't? Any other suggestions. What was in your handouts? THANKS!!

Oh, I haven't done mine yet. hehe.... mine is in January (I'm in school and time is limited)... I was just getting ideas together so I had time to write tutorials and make templates and stuff to give out. I did get some input from some friends and they had different experiences. One said she was able to pass around books just fine and the other said the ladies got too into the books that they weren't listening to her. :D One said she actually showed them really quickly with a projector how to make a simple LO and it really got ladies interested because it's hard to understand how digi works... once they saw how layers worked they were really into it. I think I will probably try and show how to make a simple LO.

OK, thanks... mine will be in January too. We are thinking an Intro class, and then some later classes that will teach things more in depth. I am trying to put some stuff together as well. This was a great link!

Mine's the same way... we're doing an intro night and then if enough people are interested, I'll be hosting a group that will meet monthly

Hey, if you'd like any tutorials or templates I make for this, I'd be willing to share! Just let me know!

I'm stalking this thread - I'm doing something very similar at our church in March and I'm already planning. Thanks for all the ideas!
