...set up a forum without needing my own host and domain.... blah blah blah. How do those Yahoo groups and stuff work? I am so clueless...

i've set up many invision free boards. It's SO intuitive, just google it and the rest is SO easy!

yahoo group isn't really a forum

but do what Lena said. there are lots of free boards you can set up.

Can I set Invision to private? So only registered members can view the forum and I can approve who registers?

I'm a big fan of exco boards (free of course)... I used to have a few boards on their network (or whatever you'd call it). Their support staff is awesome.

I always set my inivision free up so that the members have to be preegistered! I set everyone up using the username they want, their email addy, and a temporary password that they then change. Once they are preregistered I give them a link to the board and they can see it, login, and change their pw. Nothing is visible to an unregistered user.
