Hamburger Meat is fattening.

So I have decided to start back on my Weight Watchers again and I was sitting here going over food lists and points values.
I realized I had to put dinner in the crock pot and figure up all the points values per serving and so I figured up some ground beef.
...and did you KNOW that one pound of hamburger meat has 1400 calories and 120 grams of fat!?
I about died.
Guess I won't be eating much red meat again. Thank the Lord for pork and chicken. :p

lol, yeah a pound is a lot, but I also think it depends on what kind you buy. I've seen stores that sell products ranging from 3% to 25% fat. There is a significant difference in the nutritional facts. The leanest isn't that bad and some of the fat is lost in cooking. I always pay more for the leanest since you end up with more usable product and it's less hassle draining the fat.

BWAHAHAH! I'm not eating a pound...just a pound of hamburger meat goes into the recipe.
I just thought that was a lot of fat and calories for one little pound.

I use ground turkey instead of hamburger meat! I think it tastes better, it's healthier & where I live, it's cheaper!

yeah - well if you eat a whole pound of it....blech ROFL

You guys are gonna gross out, I'm sure...but even with cheap packages of ground beef, I boil it. Yep. I boil it. ESPECIALLY if it's going to be beef that is IN something, and not the main flavor of the meal - which we rarely do.

So..I get a big stock pot and boil the meat, then drain it. You lose a TON of the fat from pan frying or putting in the crock pot. I do use root vegetables and such to help flavor it. This meat is what ends up in spaghetti, casseroles, taco meat, etc. It helps greatly reduce the fat content of the meat and makes it a consistency we like. I think do a quick prepare of how it's going to end up (if it's meant to be taco meat, I quickly toss it in the pan with my seasonings, then packag it up in serving sized containers for the freezer. It really does help on the fat, even in the cheapest fattiest packages of ground beef.

I'm with Deb, we only do ground turkey over here. It's so funny, Yorick made a horrible face the other day when we were at a friend's house and they grilled up a beef burger for him. I don't usually notice a difference except when I'm really really craving beef, so a hamburger once or twice a month isn't too bad.

You know what is really good... Bison! It tastes just like beef but has very very little fat in it. Its awesome! I wish I could use turkey... but where I live its like 3x the price of beef!

I wish we hunted...I hear moose meat is good fer ya, too, donchaknow

So we stick to beef..because it's still cheapest here in cattle country.

I usually go for the 93% which is leanest I see. Depends on what I am making though. Like Darcy I boil it if it is tacos or chili or part of a casserole, so I get 80% if that is cheapest. But I add pork or sausage to my meatloaf and meatballs so I go for the leanest beef and mix in turkey with it. Ground turkey is currently on sale at Safeway.

If anyone is doing weight watchers...

2 cans of Del Monte Green Pepper and Mushroom spaghetti sauce + 1 lb ground beef, divided into 10, 1/2 c. servings is 6pts per 1/2 c. serving.

LOL

I don't like venison ground. I have to have it as beef jerky. It's too gamey for me otherwise but I will eat it ill if it's jerky.
Turkey is ok but it doesn't have that "flavor" although we do use it from time to time...I may have to start using it more.
Bison? Eww
I tried Black Bear summer sausage once and I about gagged.

I was going to say something about Bison too. They sell ground bison meat at the commissary here so we bought some because my DH wanted to try it. I'll admit I was a little skeptical about it but it seriously tasted no different than ground beef. It was actually really good!

If you drain it though you lose alot of the fat right?

If I could I would eat venison instead of beef. Has a very similar taste but a whole lot lower in calories and fat. A venison burger is very good and tastes IMO better then a beef one

I'm not much for game and I can't stand ground turkey. Blech...

We only eat ground beef about 2-3 times a month. I always buy the leanest that I can find too.

I love red meat... but we mainly live off of chicken and veggies.

Deb, yeah turkey is insane here... I don't know if its as pricey everywhere in Canada, but at the Costco I go to, I can get a "club pack" of about 1.5 lbs of ground turkey for $24.00. Or I can get a HUGE club pack (like 5 lbs of lean ground beef) for $15.00. It totally sucks!

wow I thought it was bad here at like 3 bucks maybe 4 bucks a pound!!

Holy cow! I get my ground turkey $1.50 for a pound here! Crazy! Yeah, I wouldn't be buying it at that price either!

My kids like ground pork and ground turkey. Me, not so much. I do love ground beef though. I try to buy the extra lean (not sure of the fat%).

ETA ground turkey is wicked expensive here too, compared to the beef.

I need to do something too, I can't get motivated, and I'm just getting fatter.

I am a vegetarian, too, but my son and dh are not. I find the price of meat to be a lot cheaper and leaner when I buy it at a local meat market rather than the grocery store. My son also loves turkey, its his favorite meat.

Mari - I sure wish we had one!! My inlaws have one in their town..and they get great deals on meat there - and the butcher marks stuff down after a day! So she's always been getting awesome deals on steaks - so much that they are sick of steak! LOL

We don't have one here that's not so far that it's wasting more fuel to get there. But I'd love a good local market!

I had never had ground turkey until a year ago last July when I started my diet at Inches A Weigh...now I buy it all the time. They told us not to eat pork or beef more than twice a week because it was harder for the body to digest. I really didn't think I would like ground turkey...just didn't *sound* good to me.

I just bought 20 pounds worth of ground turkey at Sam's Wholesale Club today. 5 lbs is sitting in the frig waiting for dh to make chili...I honestly cannot tell the difference between beef and turkey in his chili.

Once in awhile I will have a ground beef hamburger...but not often. ...or I will have dh mix it 1/2 and 1/2 turkey and beef. There is also a seasoning by Mrs. Dash for hamburger which we have used on ours...but honestly it was at the beginning of summer and I can't remember what it tasted like...but since the container is still in the cabinet and I didn't throw it immediately away...it must have been ok. lol

After all that is said...what was the question?
