question about snowflake pattern (crochet) for christmas tree

I bought a few years ago a pattern book for snowflakes for christmas trees. I want to make some because I have alot of thread to use up. What I was wondering is if anyone else has made these type of ornaments what do you use as a stiffener? Ive heard alot of different things but I have not tried any yet. I know some methods cause the thread to become really discolored. If you have made these (or something similar with crochet thread) where you have had to use a stiffener on them please share your methods.

My step mother made some of these about 15 years ago. I'll ask her what she used. They are still as white as the day she made them. :)

yea starch is one of the things. Not sure if it discolors them or not. I know sugar water is one also but it can draw ants (DUH!!) LOL I suppose I could google and see but wanted to see first if anyone else had personal experience with it that could vouch for a particular method and give me some hints on how to do it

I use a spray stiffener for mine Aleene's Stiffen-Quick Spray. Hope that helps some. I just block it on a piece of stryrofoam that I covered with plastic wrap and spray it.

I have zero input because I'm sooo not crafty in this way, just wanted to say I looooooove these ornaments! They are so beautiful and nostalgic for me. Good luck! You'll have to post the finished product..can't wait to see them!

Oh if anyone sees a pattern for these on the internet...please let me know! This sounds like fun...and I bet I have some of that thread downstairs in my badly neglected craft closet.
