Creative Christmas Tree Theme Geniuses, help!

So all the Christmas stuff at Lowe's is 50% off right now. With my employee discount AND military discount I ended up being able to grab an extra 7.5 foot tree for $35.
YAY GO ME!

My plan is to use the tree as a Halloween tree with Nightmare Before Christmas as my theme next year.
Now normally my Christmas tree is cabin themed with felt and tin ornaments, beautiful berry garland, bead and button garland and bows. I love my tree theme but doing the same thing every year is kinda boring and I kinda wanna update it, so I thought since I'll have the new tree up next year I could kinda alternate it with a newer, fun theme.

So I have a few questions.

Should I paint the new tree black? It would take a lot of spray paint and might turn out bad so I'm not sure if I should keep it green or just go ahead and do it since the tree was only $35. But if I keep it green would it really fit in with the Nighmare Before Christmas look?

Also, I need new Christmas tree theme ideas. So far my only theme idea is like... Old Time Christmas... with lots of knotted fabric strips and things but that's kinda along the lines of my theme now.

For tree themes, my mom always had a different tree each year. My favorite was always the "angel tree". Every ornament was around the angel theme. Topped off of course with a pretty angel topper.

She also had a pink theme. Every ornament was pink. Different shades of pink. Surprisingly, it was pretty.

My trees are always just full of mismatched ornaments.
Whatever ones we've bought or the kids have made.

As for themes for the here and now... I'm like Rachel, our tree is a mix. I used to do a theme, but I have sentimental attachments to so many of my ornaments and, in the end, I like the big mix of everything that I love on there. So, lots of lights (usually multicoloured), tons of ornaments and a healthy dose of bling.

Our "theme" is red and gold. A few assorted special ornaments, and I my special carousel ones, and then 9403849328432342 red and gold ones in various tones and shapes and sizes. And a TON of white lights.

In other words, I've got no advice for ya, LOL!

This won't help much, but one year, my FIL and his wife bought a decorated tree (a charity thing) and the theme of the tree was "The Polar Express." It was the most beautiful tree ever, but of course I can't remember any specifics. It was blue, white and silver and then had a lot of unique ornaments and bells and that sort of thing. And of course, a train around the bottom.

I'm not really a theme kinda gal I'm more put all those old ornaments on the tree that you have had forever and have sentiment so I think your idea sounds way fun!

I saw a beautiful sweet-treats theme tree in an ice cream shop. It had the expected candy canes and gingerbread people and then those clear plastic ornaments each filled with a different candy (gum drops, jelly beans, m&ms). It was adorable, but I don't think it would make it until Christmas at my house.

oh yes!! as far as a new christmas tree theme, i have always wanted to do a turquoise and orange tree. with like huge colorful dragonflies and butterflies. off set with huge silver balls. this tree, mind you would not match my house at all but would be so weird and funky. in my heart i am true ikea girl. if that is too lizzyfizzified for ya, what about a sexy designer tree with like fleur-de-lis type ornaments and all things designer. the main ornaments could be black, red, hammered gold and cream. oooo...that sounds devine.

my tree is prelit with clear lights. i hate colored. i don't have much of a theme and i just have cheapo shatterproof bulbs, silver and purple garland, some sparkly silver snowflakes, a couple homemade-looking ones i got on clearance last year, and an ugly star with lights for the top, lol. i have to go cheap cause my kids play with the ornaments and the dog chews them. ugh. when they are older, i want an gorgeous, themed one, maybe old victorian or country themed. but for now, its cheap and boring, lol.

Kmart has that kinda theme
they also have a purple and gold one---we thought about that since we're from New Orleans...

Umm lets see walmart has somepretty sets we went with the silver and bright blue..it looks amazing this year

past trees were
an outdoor themed one--bird..log homes..deer..moose...bears
year before was bright pink,blues,greens and purples....
year before was a coke-a-cola themed one that was pretty neat...whites and red
year before that was a john-deere themed one..that was sooo cool...

lol can u tell i'm a theme nut...lol i love the black tree idea..we always have a mardi gras tree..so go for it

Oh I love christmas themes...Im going to do a tree that is all done in white crocheted snowflakes and silver icicles (eventually LOL)

Ive had a purple/silver theme.

I saw a pink, teal and green theme on a white tree which was gorgous.

Ive also had red/gold theme.

My mom did a white tree in all red ornaments (different shades of red)

A friend of my husbands does christmas so big and she and her husband have a tree in every room of the house and a different theme on every tree.

I have to say though I love your theme and I *think* that you posted a picture of it last year at DST and it was what inspired this years theme for me. I want a woodsy/outdoors theme. Complete with flANNEL hearts/stars, bird ornaments, these little black metal bear ornaments etc.
