So... they're doing fire alarm inspections today between 9 and 5 and I'm so stressed out. They feel since they warned us last night, that's ample warning time. I don't care that they're inspecting the fire alarms, what I do care about is, if I'm not at the door the second after they knock, they just enter. It's like a hotel housekeeper's courtesy knock. Well... this isn't a freakin' hotel, this is a home, I might be getting dressed, or trying to take the baby off the boob, or any number of things, plus... I'm a woman home alone with two very small children - having someone barge in on me is very disconcerting.

Add this to the "my toddler is a light sleeper and they can't come during naptime" clause and you can see why I'm stressed out about today. It's 9 now, I'm fixing to post a "Enter at the risk of your own health" sign out... I'm actually going to tell them to have some freakin' patience, I'll answer the door myself. And unlike a hotel room, we're not allowed to have a chain on the inside of our door. :cursing:

ETA: I just put a sign on the front door that reads, "I am a breastfeeding mother. Do NOT enter with your key, I will open the door for you. Have some PATIENCE."

I have little hope that they will read it, even though it's on a white board, hanging from the screen door handle.

Can you lock it at least?
I'd probably post a "please be patient, I'm putting the baby down and will be with you in a second" sign on the door.

That is irritating. I remember those when I lived in apartments. They are just SO rude about it aren't they?

Yeah, I can lock it, they just use their key. They LOVE LOVE LOVEITY LOVE that almighty key.

I thought it might give you an extra second or two to answer hte door anyway.

I'm fairly certain they have the key in the lock when they knock. It's the power of the key, I'm sure.

this grates me.. I had this happen 2X.. maintenance just up and walked into my house.. I Think I've told you about this ^_^ anyway.. I'm pretty sure, it's like.. illegal and shizz. 1) you need 24 hrs notice before they enter and 2) they can only enter like THAT if it's an emergency. you should check your state landlord/tenant laws.. it's bogus. I hate living in an apartment.

Our apt. management was the same way (oh and they did supposedly-random inspections to "check housekeeping issues"... no lie @@). Hopefully it all ends up being relatively stress free for you today.

LOL my APT management is pretty good about this but I can't IMAGINE them coming in and telling me that I don't keep a clean enough house..I'd tell em to call merry maids on their own dime!

I have serious housekeeping issues, but I have two kids under two... I'm lucky if I get enough time to shower.

Another reason why I'm stressed out today. I'm one of those, "I only clean if someone is coming over" people. And, yeah, I consider the fire alarm inspector guy "someone coming over", haha

oh bryn! that is total crap. i mean it seems like it needs to be done for the safety of your family, but my goodness they should have some kind of schedule and courtesy. like you said, it's your home for pete's sake. i hope it works out to be perfect timing for you guys and your day gets better. :( HUGS!! why do people have to be morons. this is my only question in life.

Wow. That sucks! Hopefully your sign will make them stop and think, at least for a minute!

I thought they were supposed to give you 48 hours notice any time they want to come in your place? What a PITA!!! And, unless it's different in each state, they're not allowed to do random inspections to check "housecleaning issues" unless there's a smell coming from your place. lol

this happened to us quite a bit while we were in Silver Spring MD when DH was at Walter Reed. whenever we had an inspection, they always found something that wasn't good enough. i never kept it clean enough for them. one time we took the top off the stove and cleaned it throughly also the fridge and they still said it wasn't good enough. when we finally left, we had to pay them $1200 in what they called 'damages'. some things we had documented during the initial walkthrough when we first rented it. like the blinds were in crappy shape to begin with, and we put that down but we stil got charged for them. and the carpet was really stained from my kids. i understand that part, but they added all this stupid crap on there. i was SO mad! i will never live in an apartment again.

So they've come and gone, thankfully they read my sign and respectfully waited for me to open the door. I told them, "Sorry about the sign, but I usually get one knock and then a barge-in" so they said they'd note that I was a SAHM, most of the residents are at work this time of day, apparently. >.<

They're going to have to put a fire alarm in our hallway, we have one in each of the bedrooms, but not one in the hallway. Our apartment is teensy, I can't imagine it needs 3 fire alarms.
