This morning my mom called at about 8:30 and said that Dad fell and she thought that he broke his ankle and she needed help getting him moved so she could get him to urgent care.
We loaded up the kids and off we went to help ... He fell while working out at the pool. He had the lid off the pool strainer and he stepped into the hole in the deck, fell backwards and landed in the pool, upside down w/ his foot still stuck up on the deck IN the hole!
He could barely call for my mom ... who didn't even hear him the first couple times he called out. He was barely able to use the waterslide edge to pull himself up enough to get his foot out of the hole. He then used the edge of the deck to get to the other end of the pool where the steps were. Mom found him there and she said that he heart just stopped when she saw him there like that.
She got the crutches and was able to get him into the house & into their walk-in shower to warm him back up while we were on our way over. Bill helped get Dad into the Explorer and Mom & Dad headed off to the Urgent Care.
He broke both of the bones, the tibia & the fibula. The break on the fibula is a clean break, but the doctor says that the break on the tibia will need surgery to set w/ pins. They put a temp cast/splint on it for now till he can get into his Ortho. The ankle is one the same leg that had a knee replaced in 2004 so they checked that as well, but everything was fine. He will go back to his knee doctor to fix his ankle.
The kids are worried Grandpa will be in the hospital for Christmas ... but I seriously doubt the doctor will wait that long. I expect that he will be in surgery this week sometime.
Of course this week is my musical and they were supposed to be driving the kids up to their Dad Friday night. I am sure it will all work out ... just will take extra juggling of the schedule
