Don't know if any of you have ever taken advantage of the Salute to the Hero's where different themed parks give free admission...Sea World has done it, Busch Gardens did it...and now WALT DISNEY WORLD!! You can get a free one week hopper pass to Disney World and pay $99 for five additional tickets. Awesome deal!

This kinda sucks because even tho we are military and our dream is to go to WDW someday, this year just isn't the right year for us. We are smack dab in the middle of a home remodel and all our extra pennies are going to that.

I did just notice that a couple of days ago and we were already planning a trip to Disney in December so its perfect!

I got an email about this the other day too. My family has been talking about going later this year to celebrate my sister's graduation from college and since there's five of us, this would be perfect. I feel a little bad though because my DH will be deployed by then but I just don't see anyway we could squeeze in a trip before he leaves. Figures they'd wait until this year to do it, if they'd offered it in 2008, he totally could have gone.

From what I read, the military member had to be with to get the discount.

I thought the same thing as you at first but the email I got said this:

The entire party needs to be present for purchase (Spouse or military
dependents can receive the companion discount without the military
service member being present as long as they have their military ID).

That seems like you won't get the free ticket but you can still get the discount? I didn't look into it too much but that was my impression from the email I received.

More info here. We've had reservations at Shades of Green for 19-25 April since before Thanksgiving and this will save us like $500 for tickets, so we are SUPER excited about this. We were bummed when Disney was doing the free admissions for WDW several years ago as our boys were too young to bother with going and they haven't had any significant WDW discounts for military since that time so this really just is perfect timing for us!!!!!!!!

Ok, I did some more digging around and it does appear that a dependent with valid ID can purchase the companion tickets without the active duty member being present (this allows families of deployed service members to still take advantage of the offer.) This is from the official press release about the deal:

"Disney’s Armed Forces Salute Companion" tickets for family members and friends may be purchased only by active or retired U.S. military personnel, including activated members of the National Guard or Reservists (with orders showing active status after Jan. 1, 2008) and active or
retired members of the United States Coast Guard (or, in each case, their spouses, but not both).

• Military personnel (or their spouses) who purchase "Disney’s Armed Forces Salute Companion” tickets for admission to the Walt Disney World Resort for family members and friends will need to activate those tickets at Main Entrance theme park ticket windows in order for those tickets to
be used (regardless of where those tickets are purchased).

• Military personnel (or their spouses) who purchase "Disney’s Armed Forces Salute Companion” tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort for family members and friends will receive exchange certificates to be redeemed by such military personnel (or their spouses) for tickets at Main Entrance theme park ticket windows (one ticket per exchange certificate)
.
• The military personnel (or spouse) will be required to present valid military identification (which, for activated members of the National Guard or Reservists, also includes orders showing active status after Jan. 1, 2008) for all ticket transactions (including to activate tickets, and/or redeem
exchange certificates for tickets, at Main Entrance theme park ticket windows). A valid ID may also be required for admission.

• "Disney’s Armed Forces Salute Companion” tickets are limited to five per service member (regardless of place of purchase and whether purchased by service member or spouse) and all five must be purchased at the same time. Accordingly, no service member (or spouse) will be permitted to activate, and/or to redeem exchange certificates for, more than a total of five "Disney’s Armed Forces Salute Companion" tickets for the Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort (regardless of whether activated or exchanged by the service member or spouse).

Hope that clears some things up. The complimentary ticket, of course, is only good for the actual service member.

I know its awesome, but I get out this summer.

Which sucks!!

We went to Busch Gardens for free a few years ago. Its awesome that the parks do that.

I went to Busch Gardens (Tampa) a few years ago and I also went to Sea World (San Diego)

It's so awesome that the theme parks are doing this!

Oh yeah..we hadn't planned on doing Disney this year cause of us going to Boston in September, but with these prices, we can't pass it up. We're leaving April 8th & my folks are even going down, too!!

Oh, good! I thought it was rather silly to not allow it without the member.

We went to SeaWorld in San Antonio when I went down for 7 Level School this summer for free. Great deal!
