Holy Hockey Equipment...

We got a note home from school on Wednesday that they are starting skating in phys ed starting on Friday (as in yesterday). So he needs to have a pair of skates and a helmet. They DO have loaners at the school if you don't have them (which we didn't) so yesterday he borrowed skates and a helmet and when we headed into the city we stopped at a store to get some.

HOLY CRAP! Hockey/skating equipment is EXPENSIVE!!!

We ended up getting him just a pair of skates and we'll let him borrow a helmet for a couple weeks until we can afford to get one of those. Seriously, it's crazy! We had a hard time finding a pair of skates for a decent price - they were sold out of his size of most of the ones we looked at, lol. The ones we bought are cool though, they will last him a couple years hopefully - they end has a button that you press and it extends up to a size 3.

Now Natalie wants skates, lol...good grief! :D

you need to go to a 2nd hand shop ;) .. that;s where my brother always got his hockey equipment. That shizz is MAJORLY expensive. *hates it.. especially since kid wants to play hockey too*

yep, dh plays and it's definitely not a cheap sport. then there's his league fee (on top of paying for his own equipment). that's like $500-600/season. ugh.

and he already has skates for the kiddo to "grow in to." yay. more crazy fees in our future.

We never buy new skates for DS - he just grow too fast! There are lots of used sporting goods stores in Edmonton. We did however make sure he bought a new helmet for my peace of mind lol! What's worse is having a DH who plays goalie - now that's expensive equipment!

Bree, they should be allowed to wear a bike helmet on the ice, not specifically a hockey helmet. I know that here and every other place we have lived let them on the ice with a bike/sport helmet.
And yeah, skates ... buy them before winter fully hits at a sport swap.

Yeah hockey is a majorly expensive sport! Three of my younger brothers played both ice & roller hockey so my parents had three sets of equipment to buy for both! Not too mention all their fees and they also played on traveling teams so their was more expenses for that! My BIL also played both (they are all around the same age) and he also played goalie so he had extra equipment for that too! My parents and IL's both have outgrown equipment hanging around their houses so I guess if my kids ever show any interest in playing they'll have some stuff to use!

You may be able to, but bike helmets are NOT CSA approved for ice skating. We do not allow bike helmets during our CanSkate sessions, our schools do not allow them for school skating sessions either. Just an FYI!

Also, do you have a Play it Again sports or something? They have lots of skating gear for cheaper, most of it is hardly used.

I have an extra hockey helmet, I have 4 here now...too bad you're so far away!

Yeah the letter we got home from the school said that it MUST be CSA approved hockey/skating helmets...no bike helmets.

We'll have to check out a few other stores - we just went to Canadian Tire because they're open late and I knew they'd have that stuff, lol.
