I don't have the D40 but I do have the D80 and I :wub: it so very much!!! I wouldn't trade it for anything... well, maybe for the D90. LOL!!!
My battery lasts quite a while and it blows my P&S out of the water even on Auto Mode.
You may want to check into the lens thing... I'm not sure if it's the D40 or D60 but some lenses are not compatible with one of them.

We have the D40 and LOVE it--and we had the S3 before, so we're camera twins! You'll notice a HUGE difference between that and the S3. The battery life is great.
We bought ours on the recommendation of Ken Rockwell (who runs a fabulous site, BTW). Basically, what he says is that unless you're prepared to shell out a grand, there's really no better option than the D40. He prefers it to the D60 and D80.

I hav a D40 and I love it. It is so easy to take photos with! I've taken about 2000 since I got mine Nov 2nd. I've charged the batteriy 3 times since then as well. One of those times was because I left the camera on overnight.
There is one lens that many people on scrapbook boards use, a 50mm that will not auto focus with it, you can still manually focus it though adn there is a version out that will autofocus with the D40, it costs more than the regular one. I didn't think of that as a deterent though, so I got the D40

I have the d40x & it's essentially the same just higher megapixels. I LOVE my camera & is definitely way better than my P&S! The battery life is awesome! I use my camera every day & maybe charge the battery every other week...maybe! If you decide to get it, you'll love it too! I promise!
