Well... it's my turn now. My EHD crashed, I have lost hundreds of dollars worth of kits and DH basically told me, "Too bad, you should have backed up."

And all of the pictures I've taken since Thanksgiving are gone. And all of my layouts are gone, too.

At this point, I don't even want to scrap anymore.

((((HUGS)))) Bryn! I am terribly sorry. I would be devestated as you are. It is a huge fear of mine...even when I back up. I lost all of Natalie's(my first dd) baby photos that way. I will always feel guilty. I hope you don't give up scrapping... :(

(((hugs))) Brynn! What exactly is your EHD doing? Sometimes when we think it's crashed, it's not really "dead"...

I don't know, it's been whisked away by my tech geek DH. I heard something about ICU, and "Contact Next of Kin"

Oh Bryn... I totally understand hon! It's horrible when this happens. Stuff is never REALLY gone, but it can take a pretty penny to get it back... I hope that's not the case for you. I hope you can at least get your pics back.

Bryn- so sorry to hear that! I too had that happen...

I was able to recover some stuff with RecoverMyFiles (http://www.recovermyfiles.com/) ($60 software)... but it was all a jumbled mess and in fact, I STILL haven't sorted through ti all, but it was worth it to recover some of my digi stuff and all my pics. It also lets you try BEFORE you buy to see if it recovers anything first....worth a shot!

I feel your pain hon! Hugs!

DH is at Fry's right now (he took the 2 year old with him to help me chill out, i've had a really really bad day, not just the ehd)
he's getting the supplies to data recover himself (he's a techie professionally)
So... he thinks he'll be able to salvage most of the harddrive.

Keep your fingers crossed... I've got my dang life on that hard drive...

And please, ladies... backup, backup, backup.

In fact, DH suggested you girls fork over the $5/month to get Backblaze (https://www.backblaze.com/index.html)... he says they're amazing, and they're especially good for photographers.

I got an EHD when our laptop died and my whole life was stored on that thing. So I get the whole sick to your tummy feeling when you think you've lost it all. I spent like 8 days doing system recover just to get my data off that laptop. I was lucky and recovered everything before it died for good. Would hate to be up a creek if my EHD died.

I know nothing about backing up. Someone educate me PLEASE!

that sucks - sorry to hear that.

I just don't understand why they can't improve them and make them more stable - it just doesn't make sense that we are just expected to buy them and assume they will fail...gotta be a better way...

Ya know I feel your pain. Hopefully your hubby can recover at least some of your data... especially your photos. I am hoping that my geek hubby will be able to recover my data from my EHD crash last month when he returns from Iraq.

In the meantime... do what I did. Sign up for Mozy. I feel better already knowing that if something happens again that I have a backup. But be prepared it takes Mozy a LONG time to do the initial backup. Mine is still going (and has been for about 3 weeks -- and it says it has 6 more days until it finishes the initial backup). To help make it go faster I have not been using my desktop computer unless I absolutely have to (I am using my laptop instead).

we have everything in terms of photos on Tony's hard drive, Tony's EHD and Mozy. And some is backed up to DVDs.

My scrap stuff is on my laptop, and on my EHD, some is also on my PC. Some is backed up to DVD, but nothing recent.

I am paranoid as hell about it, and wish there was more I could do with it, but since most of my stuff is scrap stuff, I don't worry too much, while a loss would be devestating, I'd live. If it were my pictures, not so much. My dad harped on me forever to back up (he's a computer programmer, webdesigner, multi-computer guy) and I'm so glad I listened. Especially when Tony's hard drive tower was knocked over by Rae, and the EHD died within 2 weeks of each other in the Fall.

Bryn, I really hope your DH can get the stuff off. ((more hugs))

Ugh, that blows Bryn :(

I have 2 EHD's just for this reason. The 1 stays here at work and is the super backup. I bring it home once a month to backup the rest of my stash.

So is Backblaze better than Mozy? I hated Mozy when I tried it.

My laptop crashed a couple weeks ago- not only did I lose my purchases, I lost photos from Halloween on and I lost a lot of my store files- stuff I use to create my products (and preview packaging stuff). It sucks having to remake those!

I hope you are able to get your photos & other files back. Keep your head up :)

Well, he went and spent $200 on stuff last night (including a terrabyte "house" harddrive) to get everything back since I was so despondent. The thing is I was truly freaking out about was the pictures and he understood that. (Unfortunately for me the first thing he recovered last night was 600gb worth of scrapbooking stuff... he didn't realize I had that much, oops)

So, he had to go to work this morning and tonight he'll finish the recovery. It was a really bad scare.

I don't know a lot about Mozy... I just know all of my pro photographer friends can't say enough about BackBlaze, and since I'm trying to start a photography business, I'm just going with the in crowd. ;)

Well, at least your drive was recoverable, Bryn!! :)

Backblaze looks to be almost exactly like Mozy...same thing, will backup EHD's as long as you connect them at least once within 30 days...keeps files on the system until it's been removed from your computer/EHD for 30 days...etc. The recovery system they have I think is different than Mozy...but I'm not sure...you can download it all free (but not really an option for those with a limit on bandwidth), or get it put on DVD's for a fee, or an EHD for a fee.

I'm glad he was able to get stuff back! I hope all of your photos!

My mom just signed up for carbonite and is impressed so far. $50 a year, she said ... I might check it out. I would also be devastated if I lost everything!
