I was at Old Navy yesterday and I bought each of my kids a summer outfit, a bathing suit and a pair of flipflops. For some reason I was charged 6% sales tax on the bathing suits  Are bathing suits not considered "necessities"!?!?!

I've only lived in Pa since Dec of 2005 and I thought that all clothes and "necessities" were exempt from sales tax. Or do you think maybe it's my county......I live over in Indiana County.

Anyone know about this? TIA!!

OK I think I found the answer from googling, in accordance with the provisions of 61 Pa. Code §§ 52.1 and 58.1: Generally, clothing is nontaxable except the following: (1) Formal day or evening apparel; (2) Articles made of real, imitation or synthetic fur where the fur is more than three times the value of the next most valuable component material; and (3) Sporting goods and clothing normally worn or used when engaged in sports.

TX gives us a tax break on clothes once a year before school starts. But that is it. Otherwise it's 8.25%.

Same..we get a tax free weekend before school starts...

Georgia has a 4% state sales tax..then the counties have a tax so it depends on where you live/shop as to what tax you pay...Food is taxed less here but everything is taxed something.

no tax-free weekends here. it's 6.75% every day of the year (state tax of 5.5% + county tax of 1.25%). we don't have a food tax though.

Up here food and children's clothing aren't taxed. Pre-packaged food is taxed though...like if you buy those premade sandwiches or whatever. And I'm not sure about adult clothing...seems to me I've paid tax on it before. In Alberta, we only pay 1 tax (GST which is federal) because we have no provincial sales tax. We're the only province to not have PST...it's SOO nice, lol.

Sheesh.

We pay 7% on everything every day of the year, and here in Indy, you're charged 9.25% at restaurants/bars to pay for the new Colts stadium. :p

We have 6.5% on everything here except food (unless its prepared food that is taxed), but if I go across the border, MN has no tax on clothes. That helps.

Texas does have a high sales tax! I had forgetten about it until I went shopping when I was done there last summer.

Yup, if you can eat it or wear it here in PA its not taxed unless its a luxury item....guess swimming and sports are a luxury, huh? Oh well, they get you coming and going anymore!
