Commander Flash, Remote Slave?

Can somebody please explain these in dummy English? Which one is better and does what with your camera and why do I need it? Google isn't giving me much info here. Thanks ladies!

I'm guessing you're trying to decide between the SB600 and SB800? Anyway, the ones with the commander capability can be used to trigger your other flashes if you want to do a multiflash setup. The slaves cannot do that, they can just be the flash getting triggered.

You don't need the commander capability unless you want to have more than one flash. The way I looked at it was, if I eventually buy the 800 for those capabilities, I'd already have the slave flash in my 600.

Am I making any sense? (my brain is fried today)

Its actually very simple, Amy.

Commander Flash is the superhero defender of the free world who posesses the ability to blind his adversaries with a *flash* of bright light.

Remote Slave is Commander Flash's arch nemesis who is intent on enslaving all who oppose him.

:p

Jenny, you certainly understand how my brain works :D

Ok Joan, so when you say it can trigger other flashes, do you mean stuff like alien bees or just other SBwhatever hundreds. I am thinking SB600 is all I'll need but uh, long way down the road since right now I didn't even know what they're for except to flash :p

Jenny, I just about peed my pants.

I bought the 600. I'm assuming that the 600 is slave only and the 800 is a commander? Unless you plan on doing lots of studio work, I think the commander unnecessary. And even then, you'd need another flash for it to command.

To be honest, I'm not sure about triggering the non-Nikon stuff, I haven't looked into it enough.

But, yes, SB600 is a great place to start. And, as I said, if you end up that long ways down the road where you want to do more, it's a nice companion to the SB800, or whatever you might choose at that point. My brother uses a SB800/SB600 combination for some of his bird photography.

COMMANDER FLASH!!

I'm glad you posted that, Jenny. It totally sounded like some kind of pervy anime comic to me!
