So, I wake up this morning and open my laptop to see Windows Vista has updated itself. Which you know, whatever, I didn't really care, except sometimes when it updates, I can't open Microsoft Word up.

But no...I get home after lunch, and try to open up Photoshop to get a couple layouts I have done into the right format to print at Walgreen's. AND ITS DOING THE SAME THING AS WORD. So, what happens is, the Photoshop window opens, but it never starts loading and then it freezes. This has happened once or twice before, but it's not very regular. Word stopping working is a pretty regular thing with these updates.

With Word, when this happens, if I restart my computer 3 times over like 2 days, it'll start working...but the thing is, I need my pictures printed TODAY. Which requires Photoshop to be working. Does anyone else have this problem/know what in the world is happening when my computer updates and Word/Photoshop won't work?

never had any issues after the Vista update yesterday ... I had Photoshop open and did two LOs without any problem. I am running PS7, an older version.
And I have never had a problem running Word or anything either.

OMG! I just had this problem about 3 weeks ago!!!! And, I've gotta tell you, the outcome was not good!!!!

It was all because of the new "adobe updater!" so to anyone reading- hit "no!" when it asks if you want to update!!!! I've since read in other forums and blogs that this has caused trouble for other people, too.... I tried to restore it the previous day (before the update installed), but it didn't work....

I had to totally "restore my computer to day 1"- so I had to totally reinstall everything- when I called Dell tech support, they ran me thru a bunch of crap for 3 hours, then finally said I'd have to restore to day 1. Oh crap! I thought, but don't be too upset about your pictures-

you can go into "safe mode" and get them off of your computer with a flash drive of EHD if you haven't backed up in a while.... (to get to safe mode- you hit F8 repeatedly while your computer is starting up, and then select safe mode from the selections it gives you... from what I remember... or you can turn your computer off without "shutting down" which, from what it sounds like you'll have to do anyway, and then you'll get the black screen with selections when you turn it back on- "safe mode" will make everything look really funny, but don't worry, it'll be back to normal afterward.... and a suggestion, when putting your pictures back on, make sure to scan them with your anti-virus first, in case there's any viruses...)

I really hope your problem isn't as serious as this, but it's exactly what happened to me, and this is what I had to do....

I can't get photoshop to work, either... it's been a week or so. I wonder if that's my problem.

That's sooo weird! Mine wasn't that bad, I restarted my computer twice and everything's working (seemingly) okay now. I can't figure out though, its only like this when Vista updates. If I don't update by myself, Word would stop working for like two weeks at a time. It's just so weird, I don't understand why a Vista update would do that.

I personally hate Vista- I only have it because it came with my laptop when I bought it.... if I could down-grade to a lower Windows version, I would! :p

I wish that's all I had to do! But everything would freeze on me... Internet Explorer, my "picture" and "document" folders, games, etc.

Somehow PS messed up everything in my computer- every other program worked just fine in "safe mode", even games, lol. But when I tried to open either PS (I have Elements 6.0 & CS4 installed) both would get an error message. But once I totally restored it to day 1 settings, everything was fine. I reinstalled everything, and now when I get the "do you want to install the new Adobe updater?" message- I click "NO FRICKIN WAY!" LOL! :)

I do still get the frickin "memory management" blue screens, though! I HATE VISTA!!!! :cursing: :p

ok is there a way to set it up NOT to update Adobe? If so, please tell me. So far (knock on wood)...I haven't had any troubles. Could it be because I am running a 64 bit system??? I have CS3 and I do have Word 2007.

I got this laptop a couple months after Vista came out, and Dell still had XP as an option...but my dad convinced me into getting Vista, because he was like oh yeah XP had the same problems when it came out, they fixed it with the updates.

No..I STILL hate Vista, a year and a half after getting this laptop.

Ugh, mine did that too. I had PS open all night and had saved my work, but all of the patterns I made and loaded were gone when I went and reopened PS. It is such a PITA! I wonder if there is a way to stop those automatic updates from happening?

You can change your user prefs to turn auto updates off. I'm not at home right now or I'd tell you how in Vista I've got XP at work. Sorry!

Yes, you can set it up to notify you that there are updates rather than just installing them.

That might explain why I haven't had the problems yet...mine was set for me to decide whether to update...got quite a few updates sitting there...but I'm afraid to do it...

I just had this problem too. I rebooted a couple times, same problem. Deleted the preference file, same problem. I read a couple forums that said having a network printer as the default could cause the problem. As soon as I switched that, I could open files, and they're opening much faster than they used to
