oh mono.

I just found out I might have mono...since my boyfriend has been sick for the past week, he thought he had this stomach flu that was going around & then yesterday, his throat hurt and so he thought he had strep. So, he went to the doctor today, and they told him he has mono. He probably got it through band, and people you know, spitting into their instruments.

But that I means I'm probably getting it. Awesome. So, has anyone had it before? How long did it take to get over it? And, more importantly for me, how long could you not do anything?

Oh man! I hope you don't have it. I was down for over a month when I had mono. There were days when I literally slept for 24 hours straight, not even getting up for potty breaks. If you do have it, the best thing to do is allow yourself to rest. Just rest. Sleep if you need to, don't fight it.

I really hope I don't have it, but then again, the chances are pretty high that I do. I probably just need to go to the doctor and get a blood test to see if I have it and the symptons just haven't shown up yet. I'm not sure I could just not go to school for a month, aha.

yup just like Leila, i was also down for over a month. i stayed so tired and run down all the time. Be sure to get all the rest you can!

I was out of school for 2 weeks when I had it.. I was 16. I slept for literally days straight. The most important thing is rest!!!

I never had it, but I remember other girls having it. It was a good month that they were out of it. Rarely came to school, just slept.

There is still a good chance that you didn't get it. Not everyone does...even with kissing!

Yes...a good month though, and then still weak and needing lots of rest for sometimes up to a month after that.

My oldest had it in high school, thankfully he got it over summer break. Even after a month though, we went on a trip to Alaska, and when we'd go for a hike, he'd stay back in the car and sleep. Poor guy. It really wiped him out.

Oh you poor baby. Get lots of rest and don't push yourself too much. If you do, it may last longer--and as it is, mono last a LONG time. I hope your boyfriend gets over it as quickly as possible and I hope you don't get it!

I had mono, too, when I was in grad school. It took nearly a month from when I first got symptoms until they could finally detect that I had mono - the first couple of times the tests came out negative. So I was actually sick for two months. Sleep was hard to come by for a while because I got tonsillitis so bad I could hardly breathe (or speak or drink). But eventually, yes, sleep was the best thing....

my mom's freaking out now, haha. she's just convinced i have it. i've been tired lately...but that's just me. i'm always tired, no matter how much i sleep. i'm praying so hard i didn't get it somehow. we think he ended up getting it because he had the stomach flu, and that weakened his immune system, and then the mono showed up. i haven't seen him in the past week, because he's been sick, so i think there's a good chance i didn't get it, because the symptoms weren't there the last time i saw him.

I've had mono twice, despite the fact that most people say you can't get it twice. But yes, you can. I was out with it for a long time. I missed 2 weeks of school and didn't really get back to normal for many, many weeks. My mom said I was hallucinating from the fever too, and she was completely freaked out.

Actually, I still have periodic issues with extreme fatigue, sore throats and random fevers....all a byproduct of the mono, even almost 20 years later.

There's a chance you don't have it, but even if you feel fine now, extra rest might be a good idea.

That makes two of us, Rochelle. I was finally DXd with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because of it. There's research showing a connection between EBV (the virus that causes mono) and CFS. Of course there's also research showing the opposite, and that simply because EBV and CFS have similar symptoms and presentations does not mean one causes the other. No skin off my teeth I suppose.

I think that might have something to do with the fact that once you have it, the mono virus stays with you throughout your life. Then, if your immune system is weak, you can get the symptoms again.

The EBV/CFS connection is complicated, so it's not surprising that the studies show conflicting results. There's an established link between EBV and lymphoma though. Oh joy, huh? LOL!

I've been evaluated for CFS, but I don't meet the criteria. The label doesn't matter anyway, since symptom management is still necessary, regardless.

I had mono in high school and was out of school for a month and a half. It was awful! I won't subject you to the gory details! I hope that everything is ok and you DON'T have it!

I was one of the ones that had in high school also. I was out for a few months and had to do independent study. I did get to graduate with my class though.

My dh (boyfriend at the time) never came down with it. I did have some extra goodies that came with it, like hives for a long time and I ended up with viral hepatitis (probably from being so run down). I had liver and spleen issues with it at the time.

Hope you don't have it. If you get a really sore throat, looks swollen and you can't stand it, then I'd say you have it.

Good luck!

that actually reassures me that he DIDN'T get it. i feel fine now. but idk im just hoping that stays for the next couple weeks..haha.

Ugh.. I had mono when I was in high school. It was the worst illness I ever went through. I was out of school at least 3 weeks if not more. I also got diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome when I had mono.

I really hope you don't have it or get it. I don't wish it on anyone. Keep us posted.

Sure hope you don't have it! My experience was much like everyone else's. About a month down. Not good.

I got monomy senior year of college and while I would have LOVED to sleep everyday for a month it wasn't an option for me , I woudl have flunked out of the nursing program for missing clinicals. Thankfully I was doing my psych rotation so there was a lot of sitting and talking.

The best thing is to keep hydrated and rest. A lot of people DON'T get mono even when they are exposed. My DH (then my BF) didn't get it when I had it and I am exposed to it all the time at work .
