Help, please

I went to the doctor yesterday for my 36 week check up and they did the final ultrasound to measure baby, holy cow how accurate are the weight measurements that they do, her head is measuring a week behind and my stomach is measuring a week behind but her weight is measuring a week ahead, they are saying she is 6 pounds already, how accurate is that, my first was 7lbs 7.5 oz and a week late. Any help is appreciated.

you just want to know how accuate they are? they aren't. they can even be as much as 2 lbs off. I think a head measurement through u/s is probably more accurate than weight. And, most babies aren't born very proportionately anyway! I wouldn't worry at all if I were you.

Plus my stomach measured weeks behind with my last and she was 8 lbs and came 2 weeks early... so, it only means so much.

In my experience, they are actually pretty accurate. With my 1st they estimated she was about 6 lbs, 5 oz and she was actually 6 lbs, 7 oz. Here's hoping she comes early for you. ;)

The weight measurements are not very acurate at all. I was told my first baby was over 8 1/2 lbs. Turns out, he was 7lbs 1oz at birth.
Like Sarah said, the head size is more acurate. I wouldn't bet on the weight "guess". Good luck!

They aren't accurate - they induced me 3 weeks early because DS was "big". Nope, he wasn't he was only 7 lbs!

I didn't have a final ultrasound, but I measured as dead on up until the last week, then I measured about 1-2 weeks ahead. When Ava was born, she was only 6 lbs 3 oz... so really, a baby could be ANY size no matter what you measure :).

I thought they weren't very accurate but hubby kept saying last night that this is going to be a big baby and I don't really think she is that big, other than my belly feels like all baby. I just hope that they weren't two pounds off the other way and it is bigger than they thought. Ha Ha.

Thanks, Rachel

I think it depends on how good your sonographer is!!! With my first three (same sono tech and OB) there were pinpointed within 3 oz each and every time. When my doctor told me my baby was x amount of pounds I believed him.

With baby #4 I had a different OB and sono tech and I was told my baby was going to be big (at this point I had had 2 girls at 7lbs 5 oz and 7lbs 6ozs and a boy at 8lbs 5 ozs), to expect another boy that was over 8lbs. I was induced at 38 weeks for PIH (pregnacy induced hypertension) and my baby boy was only 7lbs 7ozs.

So I truly believer it's all in who is reading and preforming your ultra sounds!!!

they told me I was having a 7+ lb baby......... I had a million U/s .. even one the day before.
he was 4lbs......
they were shocked.
the end. :]

it totally depends on how accurate the ultrasound is & how much they measure & calculate. I was measuring big - I was ginormous with DD#2 - and we went to a specialist for a follow up ultrasound. They measured, calculated and so on - and estimated her weight to be 9 pounds 3 oz. A few days later I was induced & yep - 9 pounds 6 oz. :)

And what is funny is that her tummy was OFF THE CHARTS for its bigness. Huge tummy. Both in width and length. To this day (she is 2) she has quite the buddah belly on her. LOL. It's just her.

With my twins they estimated they were both around 6 lbs and that was just 5 days before they were born and my boys were 5,8 & 5,1.5 so it was pretty darn close to accurate!!! I think it could be around a 1lb off either way.

1st baby: measured 6.2 when I was only 32 weeks. Induced at 38 weeks, they thought he was in 8-lb. range. He was 9.1

2nd baby: still measuring big; they thought, again, in the 8-lb. range. She was 7.9

3rd baby: 5 days before having her, she measured at 8.5; she was 8.5 at birth!

But they tell you they can be a pound off either way. I think they get the weight measurement from some kind of formula the machines do off of the head circumference, leg length, and belly measurement. There's no way it can be totally accurate.

Huh, no one ever guessed how big my son would be. When do they do that? I went into pre-term labor at 35 weeks and they kept waiting for him to be born any day after that so maybe they just didn't do it? You would think they would be more interested in his size then. IDK.

I had the same doc for both my pregnancies. A week before DS1 was born he said DS1 was a bit over 7lbs and DS1 came out at 7lbs7ozs. 4 days before DS2 was born he said DS2 might come close to 8lbs. DS2 was 9lbs 2ozs. The doc comes into my room later that day and asks me how I managed to hide a 9lb baby from him. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. They probably are off a little. Mine were pretty accurate as far as me having a big baby, I measured at least a week ahead on every US I had and the one I had the day before I delivered her guestimated she'd be 8 lbs..she was 9lbs 6oz...so they were off. I knew they were off when they did the last one b/c I KNEW I had at least a 9 pounder in there lol

My son was born at 35 week and weighed 6 lbs 7oz and his u/s had him only at 5 lbs about 2 days before.

I agree with the majority, they aren't very accurate, not to mention the comparison is the "average" baby (when talking about weeks ahead/behind) and we all know how much variation there is between newborns.

You should have been told that estimated fetal weight measurements can be off by UP TO 2LBs in either direction. It's simply not an exact science.

JP's EFW: 4lbs 8oz
JP's BW: 7lbs 1oz

Devin's EFW: 6lbs 14oz
Devin's BW: 8lbs 11oz

Now, JP's was done when I first go to the hospital after my water broke, so about 30ish hours before he was born. There's simply no way he gained 2½lbs in that time, lol! Devin's was done about a week prior to his birth, so he could feasibly have gained that much in that time, but it's unlikely.

That is what I asked the tech, I said isn't just an estimate and it can be off by a few pounds even, she said no it is really a good estimate! Either she is really confident or just blowing smoke at me. She had to measure the stomach 6 times because she was moving so much and she measured the head three because the baby is so far down already she couldn't get a clear shot.

From personal experience...they can be off by 1-2 lbs in either direction! I have 3 boys...with my second their measurements were right on the whole way...he was almost 4 weeks early and weighed in at 9lbs 2ozs.

With the baby, they measured him bigger too but he was about a lb less than what they thought.
