Opinions wanted!!!!!

OK. I downloaded the 30-day trial of Lightroom last night. I wanted to see what it was all about. I have a Panasonic FZ-30 (a super-zoom camera), but I hope to upgrade to a DSLR later this year. My camera has the ability to shoot RAW, but I don't currently shoot that way. DH is a college student so I can get LR through Academic Superstore for about $100 (so the cost isn't an issue). Here's where I need your help. What you would spend your money on...Lightroom or a great set of PS Actions (like Totally Rad) and WHY? I really am trying to figure out what the best thing for me is.

I love Lightroom and can't imagine editing photos without it now, for me it's much easier than editing in PSE6 or CS3 with actions. There are tons of great free presets available online as well as ones for sale that are pretty inexpensive. I have all of Kathryn Wilson's presets from WST and use them all the time and I also love the auto adjustment ones that were free on from the Lightroom Killer Tips blog too. So for me I'd definitely go with Lightroom!

Seriously, Lightroom. I love LR. I miss LR. I'm ordering LR a week from tomorrow. so that I never have to be without LR again. I want LR to have my photo's babies.
 
I have had LR for over a year now and can't imagine editing photos w/out it. It is easy 1 button processing for me. I didn't know how to use actions until a couple months ago and I am really getting addicted to those now. The TRA are first on my list. For me, LR was first choice because I had no idea how to edit in CS3. I am learning more now so I tend to work a little more in it. I would say LR first then build on your Actions stash. I honestly use them both together now quite often. I always start with LR and then end in CS3 with actions.
 
Okay well I have a dumb question..is LR a stand alone program..like I scrap with PSP so would I be able to use lightroom for my photo editing?
 
Yes Lightroom is a standalone program. You just edit/organize photos, then export them to a file or a program to scrap with.

And I second Leila, LIGHTROOM!! Ever had to adjust the white balance of a bunch of photos? Fix one, create your own preset, then click, click, click you are done. So much more too!

But when I had to order either an upgrade for my Lightroom or upgrade to CS2 to CS4 (older versions wouldn't work with my new camera's RAW), I totally took two seconds to chose LR!!
 
I'm obsessed with Lightroom. I'm still working on getting it more into my workflow, so I still use actions in CS2. But, I think eventually I'll use solely Lightroom. I freaking LOVE LR.

More (stupid) questions...Do you edit .jpegs or RAW files or both? Does it matter? If I'm editing .jpegs, will my photos suffer from deterioration in quality? Would I bet better off shooting in RAW?
 
Any presets for LR will be MUCH more intense on a jpg as they're designed for use on RAW files. If you're going to get LR, I'd start shooting in RAW. That's how I went about it.
 
I agree with Col. I started out editing my jpegs in LR and I was happy at first with them but when I made the switch to RAW I was blown away at the difference it made with my presets and editing.
 
Yea, I waited until I got LR to start shooting RAW. And forget it, I'll never go back! Lol! The control over EVERYTHING is absolutely out of this world.
 
Ok...OK! You guys have me convinced LOL! I'll switch my camera tonight when I get home and start annoying my kids with a photo shoot :D

Thanks for your input! It really has helped. I guess this means I'm gonna need that Scott Kelby book now too LOL!
