I have a call into my dr about my dd turning 1 this next weekend... I don't know if we will be able to get her in for ALL her shots this next week because hubby is laid off and so is our health insurance... LOVELY isn't it?! :)

Anyways, if I can't get in, or if the dang nurse never calls me back I need some advice on the milk issue!! :) I've heard some different ideas on what kind to give, whether it be whole or 2% or whatever... I don't really care (that sounds terrible!! :) ) what kind I give to dd but I just want to know what other mothers are doing... My dd is on the little end... She probably only weighs 18 maaaaaaaaaybe (thats a BIG maybe) 19 pounds... Eats like crazy though.... Will have bfast, lunch, and dinner all with between 6-9 ounces of formula... Some days shes craving more somedays she could live without it... :) Alright enough of my babbling... What are you giving to your 1 year old?!?

My doctor told me whole milk because they still need the fat, after 2 we did 2 or 1%

I use whole milk for Mya (15 months). I also used whole milk with her brother until he turned 2.

I've always heard whole milk until they are 2.

First, don't stress if she can't get all the shots at once. That's a lot of crap to inject into a baby all at one time, so if you have to do one now and then some others later, do it.

Second--they'll probably recommend whole milk for the fat alone. JP had to do goat milk for the fat (cow's milk AND soy allergies), he was maybe 14-15lbs at 1 year. (He's almost 80lbs now at 9 years). Devin did whole milk for about 6 months, then I got sick of buying two types of milk and moved him to 2%. As for her weight, if she's following a curve, she's fine. Just petite. Like I said, JP was 14-15lbs at 1. They didn't get concerned until he LOST weight a few months down the line.

Whole milk to 2 yrs old then we went to 2% and J is a milk FIEND so he drinks 1%.

I give Walkie whole milk. He has about 20oz a day. His dr says 1 year olds should be having between 18-24oz a day. He also said that toddlers their age need to have whole milk because they need all the vitamins and the fat to help their brain and body develop. :) It took Walkie a couple weeks to get used to it, but I just mixed it with less and less formula until he got used to it. He was really constipated during the switch, but the dr said that was totally normal and would go away, which it did! I started the switch before his 1 year appt, so I'm sure it would be fine if you started her on it before you get to see a dr. :D

Lol maybe my crazy sister really IS crazy haha.... The reason I was asking cause my sister said that HER dr said something about not giving my niece whole milk, that 2% is better... I too had always heard whole milk till 2, and even at the daycare I used to work at it was ALWAYS whole milk, but I haven't worked there in over a year and I didn't know if they came out with something different... BLEH... I don't drink milk... I can only drink store brand chocolate milk lol sooo maybe I'll raise Hayden that way too!! Hahah... I've told my hubby that and he FREAKS cause he was raised in a milk LOVING family... Literally if they come up to stay with us for 2-3 days we go through 2 gallons of milk... And there are 5 of them... Thats alot... :)

We did whole milk until I took my kiddo in at 2 years old and he had finally grown above average in the scales so I switched to 2%.

Also do you have a public health in your area? I know when we were without health insurance for a short amount of time, I got my son's shots done there. They only ask for a donation of whatever you can afford. If that's nothing, no problem.

I think we might have something like that, we have DSHS (Department of Social and Health Services) so that might be the same thing? I'll look into that... :) Thanks! :)

We did whole millk from 1 to 2.

Our state (so yours might too) will pay (even in a regular doctor's office) for vaccinations for children without insurance...

My boy just turned 1 on 1-31 and I give him whole milk but he only drinks about 12 ozs a day. He does get protein and calcium form other sources though (yogurt, cottage cheese, regular cheese and calcium fortified orange juice). To be honest my Ped didn't really tell me what to switch him too....but I usually keep them on whole till about 18 to 20 months and then I switch them to skim milk...but my kids are quite robust and don't really need the fat that whole milk provides!!!

Just a little FYI about the shots...you know you can go to your health department and get the shots for free or low cost.....I used them for my oldest DD 10 years ago (even with insurance) and they only made me pay $2 bucks per shot!!!

I just switched ALL my kiddos off whole milk about two years ago ... which means I was giving whole milk to a 12 year old, an 8 year old, a 4 year old and the baby who was 2. lol My kids are all skinny/tiny sized (other than the oldest, who at 14 is just average for his age, the rest are still on the tiny side), so I didn't worry about the fat content too much ... I was just too lazy to buy different kinds of milk when hubby and I don't touch the stuff. lmao

I'm odd mama out here. Madelyn is a big baby, she's 24 lbs, and our doctor told us to switch her to 2% instead of whole. So, we gradually just put less and less formula till she was totally on milk. She drinks about 18-24 oz of milk a day.

I take her to get her shots at the health department too. Our insurance only offers a set amount of "well baby care" for the first year and shots totally sucks that away. I took her to the health department for her "big" shots. Her 2 month, 3 month, 6 month and we'll be taking her for her one year shots as well. Like Mari said, we only have to pay the donation but since we can pay for them, we do.

I had a skinny skinny baby boy, so put him on whole milk at 14 months. He's still skinny, but has 24 oz a day, at least, plus three meals...

yeah, we did whole milk up to at least age 2. They need the fat for nervous system development, I think.

I'll be odd with ya Laura...

We put Ryleigh on 2% when she was 1...she was 22 lbs so I didn't worry too much about the fat and such. Cam is allergic to milk so she drinks Soy. I'll probably move Teaghan to 2% as well just b/c she's a chunk and still nursing. Plus they get a lot of calcium and fats from other milk sources (Yogurt, etc as mentioned before)

Thanks everyone for your input and advice.... I STILL haven't heard back from that blasted nurse lol... But I will be contacting the childrens hospital here because on our state health website it says they do the immunizations... WOOT!!! Great idea everyone!!! And for the milk, I will be switching her to WHOLE milk this week... Working it in with her bottles... She DEF. needs that extra fat lol... I like my little petite girl... :) I don't want her to bulk up just yet, but I know she would benefit from getting some extra help!!! :) You are all wonderful!! THANK YOU!

Now that your little one is walking or about to start, she'll keep most of the weight off from the extra milk fat. I doubt that your petite baby will gain lots of weight when you switch :)! Avalynne is on whole milk, and she's not gaining fast, but she sure is growing and getting so tall! She's fairly small too... only 20lbs by her first birthday (2 months ago), and was only in the 15th percentile.

:) Hayden's been walking since 10 months and shes I think only around the 10th percentile... 18 pounds or so... But that's how I was... Not even 20 pounds at my 1st birthday... :)

Our doc said 2% was just fine, we always switched over from formula at around 11 months or so and they did fine with the transition. Kyle loves milk, we go through at least 2 gallons a week here! But he is also a really good eater and will eat just about anything we give him and he's pretty big for his age, he won't be two til May 3rd but most people assume he's already at least two!

I gave mine whole milk. We still buy whole milk because my husband prefers the taste. I am ok with 1%, 2% or skim though

AAP came out with new guidelines recommending 2% to combat child obesity, but most doctors still recommend whole milk. So your sister isn't on crack, but I agree with everyone else...go with whole.

My DR said whole milk until age 2, and then go to 1% or skim...although we usually wind up with 2% because DH is whiny/picky. If I shop w/o him, I get Skim Extra or 1% if I'm feeling generous LOL.

I've always heard whole milk until they are 2.

Ditto. My DD (15 mos.) drinks whole. She was just about 19 lbs. when she turned 1, so I have no worries she'll be at risk for obesity if I give her whole milk.

At my baby's 1 year check in January she weighed just over 18 pounds. She's just a bitty little thing. Even now at nearly 14 months, she probably weighs barely 19 pounds. Anyway, she still breastfeeds a couple times a day, but other than that she's on whole milk. Our ped. said that at her weight she'd be fine with whole milk.

ETA: Studies have found that kids as young as 3 years old have clogged arteries, so the new standard is to recommend 2% milk for big 1 year olds because of that obesity/health risk. Our ped. recommends lower fat milk (usually 2%) for big babies that she sees.

We gave my son whole milk until he was 2 1/2- but he was a preemie (weighed under 2 pounds at birth) so he was pretty small for a while- he was only 13/14 pounds at a year old.

I've always heard to give whole milk until they're 2 years old, and after 2 give them 1 or 2% because they don't need the extra fat anymore.

Whole milk. In fact, my son just had his 2 year appt and the doc said to continue him on whole milk.

I did whole milk with Meri. She was very little too at a year. She was about 19.5 lbs. I breastfed her and she ate about 4 times a day. So what I did, is that I dropped the 4th feeding that was right before bedtime. Then I replaced one feeding at a time and watched how she adjusted. I gave her about a week to adjust. So by about a month I had completely switched her to milk.
She's now 19 months old and I just weighed her today and she weighs 27.5 lbs. I think the whole milk definitely helped her gain some weight. I might be checking with her pediatrician next week at her checkup to see if she wants us to switch to 2%. She's gained 6 lbs in 3 months....

Whole Milk until they turn 2. That's what I was told with both my kids. I switched to 2% when Keira turned 2 and I'll go to that for Cooper when he turns 2. Keira just has skim now.
