I am at my wits end...

with my 3 yo and hair cuts. It absolutely terrifies him to get a haircut. I know why..when he was 2 he climbed out of his crib and fell and broke his arm. Well, when they cut the cast off he came unglued and ever since then anything that makes a loud buzzing sound totally terrifies him..including hair clippers...but he associates haircuts with the buzzing even if we only use scissors. I just had to give him a trim and the poor thing was literally shaking he was so scared. This time was a little better b/c he actually sat still for it, but seeing him just trembling in fear just breaks my heart. I sure hope he outgrows this. I'd love for him to just have a buzz cut in the summer, but he won't let a pair of clippers near him at all.

Poor little guy! Maybe this is something Brian can help with when he gets home? I mean, if he keeps his hair short like that, maybe if Avery sees Daddy getting the clipper cut he'll be more ok with the idea?

Buzzers used to scare Wes a little too. One thing someone did before they used it on his hair was to let him touch it when it was turned on and feel the vibration. They also pretended it was a tractor. Maybe if you make a little game out of it or something he won't be so scared.

Both sons here had the same problem. That noise is just scary to them. It usually ends up being a two person job. But what also helped with DS#2 was to take him to Great Clips. He was shy and sat still the whole time. Also they use scissors most of the time and clippers only at the end if they need it. Tobey does way better for them than us now. If we want to give him a trim he is all over the place. Crying and just acting like a spaz! So I try and make sure a save a couple of bucks to save my self the stress. Good luck!!

I'm thinking this too...or at least hoping it will help. I hate to force him to sit for one, but I don't like his hair to get too long. But like I said this time was a little better...I talked him through it and at least he didn't scream his head off.

Would he feel more comfortable having a hairdresser come to your home? Maybe the whole atmosphere of a salon kind of reminds him of the doctor's office, too?

I hope your little guy gets over it soon for you :) Poor little guy!

do you have any of those kiddie salons near you? I know they cost a little more but they have little horsies and airplanes and such for the kids to sit in while they get a haircut and the whole inside is decorated for little kids.

you could try bribing him...offer him a treat for after the haircut but let him know it is coming.

Try doing the haircut a little at a time. If he gets scared tell him you can take a break until he feels brave enough to continue (but you know just stop cutting the hair dont actually leave the area)

Do a digital scrapbook book about haircuts like the one Lena did I think for the binkie fairy or toilet training so maybe he could see something and associate something positive with haircuts and you could include little pictures of him in the book so he could look at it while getting a haircut.

You could also try giving him a popsicle to eat while he is getting a haircut so he has something else to focus on while he is getting the cut.

Ummm the last thing I would try is to explain about how our hair and nails grow and they have to be cut periodically to keep our bodies healthy and looking nice.

I could have wrote this post.

My 2 y/o acts like we are trying to cut off his head. He didnt have anything traumatic happen to him, but he is still terrified.

We mostly do scissor cuts on him because of it.
The other thing that only semi helps is that we give him pop and candy while he is getting his hair cut. He never gets those things usually so it is a treat to him. Maybe you can try something temping like that for your DS?

Also, some clippers are a LOT louder than others. So maybe you can ask the hairdresser if someone has quieter ones? Or maybe just try scissor cuts?

We tried having him watch Daddy get his hair cut and it doesnt help.

Good luck!

My son throws a huge, screaming fit everytime we take him to get a haircut. I literally have to hold him down just to get it done now. Its bad expecially cause his hair grows fast. I have no idea what started it for him though cause he didn't mind the first few haircuts, then he started freaking out and it just gets worse and worse.

Thanks for the advice...we don't have any of the kiddie salons around here...though I still don't think he'd go for it...he knows when he's getting bribed lol and will have none of it lol. But like I said, today was better, he didn't just scream like we were trying to murder him so maybe he's growing out of it a little. Before having that cast cut off he would let me buzz it with the clippers but now he won't even use an electric tooth brush. I guess it was just a scary thing, that loud noise and the nurses having to hold him down to get it off. I know it was traumatic for me just watching it. Anyway. He's trimmed now for a month or so at least lol

It may be an age thing, too...Mason used to SCREAM when he had to get his hair cut and eventually grew out of it. His hair grew really quickly so he had to get it cut quite often, which was horrible for the little guy. Now he sits completely still for it. I think he was about 3 or so when he stopped freaking out (he got his first haircut at about 5 months).
