Computer Advice Needed!!!

So, is it worth buying a Dell computer??? Since my motherboard is fried we decided to buy a new computer. I have a lot of people telling me to buy an Acer because the Acer's now-a-days are very good. But my old computer (before this one that died on us) was a Dell and we had good luck with it. I'm not sure if this brand has gone downhill since then though.

Any advice on what brand of a Desktop PC to buy (on a tight budget - like 500 & under)?

Dude, I bought a Dell, an XPS, which is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I also have a Dell Studio laptop, which is also awesome. Before my Dell I had an HP which was also pretty good.

Good luck in your decision.

yep! I use a dell inspiron laptop and I love it! I also use a sony vaio which are fabulous computers too

Oh see, I love Dell, and I have had awesome experiences with their customer service. We have 2 Dell Laptops & a desktop, and I would buy another Dell in a heartbeat.

A couple of weeks ago, my ac adapter on my laptop was giving me fits (still under warranty), so I did the online chat with a CS rep. They overnighted another adapter to me (no charge)... I spoke to them at around 5:30pm central time, and I had a new adapter about 18 hrs later! I couldn't believe how fast it got here.

the ONE time I had great CS with them was online! I think that might be the key to getting thru and actually being handled by somebody is to do their online chat help. I had a repairman out the next day when I did that for our old desktop.

we have 5-6 Dells and have been happy with all of them. :) CS has been great too (both online and by phone)... guess we've been lucky.

We have a dell desktop... it works great, out dated but still runs. Customer Service is ok. It is another one of those places that customer service is from overseas so the people have thick accents. That would be my only complaint because trying to understand and communicate the problem is a little hard.

Our first desktop was an HP and it was a hand me down so I have no opinions on it. My lappy is HP though and its wonderful.

Wow! I'm so against Dell computers!!!!

I had an Inspiron 1525 laptop that didn't even last a year! It was a piece of crap! Very cheaply made, too- when I picked it up I could feel the bottom shifting around, and the battery charger (wiring inside) quit after I had it for only 6 months!!!! The door to the DVD drive never closed all the way without having to push it in really REALLY hard and it totally CRASHED after 10 months!!!! I got "memory management" blue screens all the time- starting with the first week I had it!!!! & Customer service was TERRIBLE all 5 times I had to call them!!!!

We have an HP desktop that we've had for about 3 years and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it at all- runs fast and has never crashed or had the blue screen of death!!! I just bought a new laptop since mine died- and I got an HP. I've had it about 2 months so far and I LOVE it!!! It's sturdy & solid (a little heavy but it's a large 17")- I haven't had any problems with it yet! I opted for the large memory, RAM and memory, and I'm totally happy I did- it's top of the line in graphics!!! And I haven't gotten the blue screen of death yet, unlike with my Dell! ha!

Go with an HP!!! They are a little more costly than Dell, but that's because they're better!!!! :)

We have had both a Gateway and a Dell and we were/are happy with both!
I always buy the extended warranty and buy new as soon as it is over.
We just kinda go with whatever is cheapest when it is time to upgrade...Which will be next March...

I had a really, really bad experience with my first Dell laptop, eeriely similar to Rachael's experience.

However, last March, I needed a new laptop after I busted up my shoulder, and made the decision to try Dell again. But I bought a 3 year warranty this time LOL.

I haven't had a problem at all. We bought our son a Dell desktop for Christmas, no problems with that either, but it is only 3 months old, and only used for Webkinz LOL

We have a Dell Inspiron laptop that is a couple of years old and it is a complete piece of crap! But my IL's bought it for my DH as a birthday gift so I can't complain too much really since we didn't pay for it, but we've had so many problems with it. We've had to reformat it once already and it needs to be done again, plus the combo CD burner/DVD drive doesn't work anymore and the battery doesn't stay charged at all. So I'm not really a fan of Dell computers after our experience with it.

I got a new desktop almost a year ago when the motherboard went out on my old HP desktop and I went with a Gateway and love it, I haven't had any problems with it at all. It has 3GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive and I paid around $500 for it.

I just got a Dell Studio laptop and I'm pretty happy with it. I had a question about setting up the wireless and when I phoned, the CS did suck. But I think I called the wrong number and they wanted to charge me per minute. I told them to forget it and called Future Shop! LOL Once we figured out that I had to manually turn on the "wireless" button (duh!), I was good to go!!

The hard drive in my laptop died a week after I got it, I sent it back and had it back in 5 days. This is my 3rd Dell and I'd totally buy another. We have two desktops and the laptop.

Seems like the majority of problems in Dells are with the lappys. I was thinking of buying the HP desktop in Best Buy's Ad this week. Not sure if it's any good or not but it has 4 gigs of memory. I wonder if it makes a difference buying directly through Dell or buying a Dell from a store (like Best Buy) that sells them.
