quick iPod question

I have an iPod shuffle, and David always takes care of it for me (charging, loading music, etc...)...therefore I'm not an expert on it. When I put it on the charging dock and put the USB in my laptop for charging, does it need to be on, off, or doesn't matter? thanks. :o
 
shouldn't matter. :) it'll charge either way. (at least that's how it is with our 3 nanos, 1 classic, 1 itouch, and 2 iphones.) Can you tell we're an ipod family?
 
Off is probably best because then it's not using the battery while you're trying to charge it.

I can't figure out how to turn off my Nano (newest generation)...DH's has a sleep mode but I can't find it on mine...
 
off is best, so I heard from ipod support. It still charges in the on position, but you can corrupt your ipod and have to reformat it.
