Production Halted on Twilight Sequel

Allegations of plagerism halt production of popular movie sequel.

Hollywood, CA (Associated Press) Production on the hit sequel to the popular vampire series Twilight have been halted among allegations of plagerism by young author, Stephenie Meyer.

According to sources, Meyer has been accused of stealing the idea for her popular Twilight series of novels for young adults and teenagers from her college roommate, Heidi Stanton. Stanton, 36, of Salt Lake City, Utah, attended Brigham Young University during the early 1990's and was for a time during their sophmore year roommates at a campus dormitory with the alleged author, Meyer.

The Twilight novels have sold over 42 million copies worldwide, and have been translated into 37 languages across the globe. Meyer who claims the premise for her popular vampire series came to her in a dream in June of 2003. Just three short months later she had completed the entire novel with very little to no previous writing experience.

Allegations by Stanton, who is a stay at home mother to 4 children in Utah arose after she viewed the movie Twilight for the first time last week, shortly after it was released to DVD format. Stanton claims that she had heard about the novels, but with four small children at home has very little time to read for pleasure or go to the theaters to watch movies.

"Quite frankly, I was shocked when I began watching the movie with my husband last week. I immediately told him that she got that idea from me! I wrote a fictional short story with the same ideas when we were in college together." stated Stanton.

Lawyers for both sides were remaining tight lipped Tuesday when papers were filed in Utah for claims of idea infringement. However amongst the claims, production was halted on a Studio City California production lot where New Moon is finishing post production. New Moon was slated to be released later in 2009. At this time, that has been "put on hold" stated studio heads Tuesday evening when reached by phone.

Mrs. Stanton's claims have some credence to them as she has documented proof that a short story with very similar idea was written by her in 1993 while she was a sophmore at BYU. English department chairperson Dr. Peter Benton was at the time a second year professor of writing and distinctly remembers Ms. Stanton's prolific writing style and the vampire story in particular.

"The story stood out in my mind, at the time, because it was more advanced than most sophmore students usually presented, also the vampire story stood out because I had recently taught a series of lectures on Brahm Stoker's Dracula." claims Dr. Benton. "I felt at the time that Heidi had brought a very current and up to date look at a classic subject."

No word on when or if production will resume for New Moon. Requests for interviews with Ms. Meyer or her representatives went unanswered Tuesday evening.

Oh no! Seems weird that it took the woman that long to figure it out...I mean, even if you haven't read the books, you must've heard SOME part of the story line...

Yeah, but to be honest, if I weren't on the message boards, I'd never have heard of it. I don't go to book stores, and I don't watch much tv, so it is possible I suppose. It's only from you guys that I even knew they existed LOL

That's hilarious! and yeah...DH had never heard of the books and inadvertantly went to the movie b/c he saw a poster and thought it was a horror movie..so I can see where she may not have realized what it was all about.

Well, either way, Stephanie IS the one who turned it into an international best seller. I'm totally siding with her. I'd be interested to see exactly how close her story is to the roommate's story, too.

There's always some momo that comes out of the woodwork claiming ownership of these hit stories. Harry Potter had issues too. They'll work it out and, worst case scenario, they'll buy the roommate off so New Moon can move forward *shrug*

I don't believe it. I just looked at few entertainment news sites and a few Twilight fansites (they'd be all over this news if it was true) and there was nothing about this. Plus, I just saw some pictures from the set that were taken on Friday.

Seems true but all I knew about the movie before seeing it was that it was a vampire movie....

Well I have 2 thoughts on this...

1. The story of a vampire falling in love with a human is not a new thing. In fact, I would be willing to bet that it's often young girls (teens) who are the topic of these stories simply because who wants to see a vampire fall in love with an old lady? LOL

2. If *my* college roommate had just become hugely popular for writing a series of books that were recently made into box-office-hit movies, I think I would've done a little investigating to find out at least what the story was about even if I didn't have time to read or go to the movies.

I dunno...

That web site doesn't seem all that reliable (they posted about Taylor Lautner dying on set during a stunt which is obviously not true lol) so I'm seriously doubting that story is even true. I haven't found one mention of a lawsuit on any real news site yet, every blog or celeb gossip type site always links back to that web site. I'm thinking that as huge as Twilight is, if this was a real lawsuit at least one big news site would be all over it.

I dunno, could be just a rumor, but it being posted all over the blogs today, so I guess if it is true we will be hearing something about it soon, one way or another....

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! I would probably read anything (or at least get a general idea of it) that any of my roommates put out! Especially being something SO huge and popular!

huh very interesting. Well I'm sure there is enough money out there to pay off everyone and get back on the movie if the rumor is true. So I know I'll still get to see new moon one way or the other!

They also say that she took a lot of her ideas from the Sookie Sackhouse novels.

I don't buy it. And if so, big deal. Everybody gets an idea from everyone else.

Made me nervous for a sec, but Stephanie sure wrote a lot of book for a short story and basically a lot of these novels has similar themes! I just finished Vampire Diaries and they started out rather similar also!

Ditto. Those were my exact thoughts. Even if it was true and she did write a story like that, Stephanie brought this one to light. A short story and a 4 novel series are quite different.

They've been filming in Canada, and wrapped up shooting for a week on Friday(the 17th) before heading to Italy....that's how I knew this was a total crock

that's good that it is false, seems like everyone wants to add there own thoughts and ideas when something hits big.

Vampires & Warewolves are nothing new, so unless there is something specific about the other chick's story that Meyer used, it'll prolly blow over.
