issues with built in card reader on computer

Ive been having issues with the card reader on my computer. It'll work once in awhile but I have to take the card out and put it in and take it and put it in over and over before it'll read my camera's memory card. I couldnt get the camera to upload directly for some reason since I bought it and couldnt figure out why with the owners manual or the website for the camera manufacturer. Aside from buying a card reader is there anything else I could try? Any suggestions from someone who might have dealt with this?

(I have tried several different cards so I know it is not the card that is the problem. It is defenitely the drive it is going in that is not working all the time)
 
that's happened to me before. I googled it and found a fix. I wish I could remember what the fix was so I could help you.
 
If you think of it let me know. I checked HP's website but didnt find anything really helpful there. Something about it running on USB and I swhould check to see if USB is running properly. Gonna check that now I guess. Id think if I can get it to work sometimes that it must be running properly. Im just wondering if the internal card reader might be going out. I only checked SD cards so Im going to check compact flash and see if it has the same issues.
 
mine does it sometimes too. I find if I log off my user account, and then log back on, it works. No clue. Mine's a Dell running on Vista.
 
mine is running on VIsta too. I checked the Compact Flash card I have and it works every single time. Im thinking then it must be the SD drive that just isnt working which sucks because that is what my camera uses. Im looking at getting a USB card reader thatll plug into the computer so hopefully if I get that itll work better then this one does!!
