oh I hurt someones feelings..

you're like stars
I knew I wasn't a patient teacher ^_^ .... I have friendly reminders every day that it was GREAT that I dropped the whole music major in college.
holy crap.
So I bought ce a really cheapy keyboard (I do not suggest this as a beginner keyboard at ALL btw.. I wish I had just gone ahead and gotten a real one.. you can't even play a chord.. it only allows you to press 2 keys at once... but I digress).. so I was like.. ok.. we'll have some fun, I told him I'd start teaching him the basics.. some simple scales.. and start showing him how to actually read his lil music book instead of using the numbered keyboard crap thing my mom gave him.

Yeh.. we lasted about.. 10 minutes before I screamed.. threw the keyboard down on the couch.. and stomped off saying be a bratt on your own time..I'm done with this today.

woah mood swing central LOL...
We're off to a great start :p

hehe! yeah, I so couldn't be a piano teacher! I have people ask me a lot to give their kid lessons, & I'm like, "no, you really don't want me to!" LOL

((hugs)) it's hard to teach your own children. I know for a fact this is bad..but I treat my family sometimes so much differently than a friend or stranger...b/c they love us unconditionally..it's subconscious I'm sure. My kids will still love me when I'm bad..just as we do them lol

I play, and I think it's a super valuable skill, and so I threw Avery into lessons when she was 9. She absolutely hated it. She only wanted to do what she wanted to do (been that way since birth really, so I wasn't surprised).

I told her I would teach her basics at home if she was really interested. Heck, I even have all of my piano lesson books from when I started, plus all the info available on the web, etc. She still didn't want to play along.

Then last year, she just started plucking away on her own. She had a friend teach her things that she would memorize, but then she wanted more. So, she cracks open any one of a bazillion piano books, hymns, etc. downstairs and teaches herself. I'm around to help her with new "technical" stuff as she comes across it. I can't remember how many times I wanted to throw the stinkin' flashcards across the room when she refused to memorize the notes on the scale (to read the music), etc. and now she has no problem playing both hands. She's taught herself sooooooooo much...just had to be her idea.

Way easier on me as the teacher this way...I tell her something once and it sticks.

LOL...this is SOOOO me. Avery complains that she wants to be homeschooled ('cause she hates getting up in the morning mostly). I keep telling her that she wouldn't like it at all as I'd always be in a pissy mood.

LOL! And this is why I'm not a homeschool mom. Cause I'm the exact same way. :D

10 minutes. That's pretty good. I lasted about 5 w/ lessons with my 4 year old and the keyboard...

This would be me...it's a good thing my kids don't have me for a teacher. I have patience galore with other people's kids in skating, but not for my own!

La, I didn't know you were (almost) a music major! I majored in Music Therapy, and my primary instrument was piano.

I've decided to start teaching my kids this summer. Not quite sure how that is going to go since my 5 1/2 year old thinks he knows everything already, and the piano is in the baby's room. Hmm...

I totally wanted to do music therapy! it wasn't offered, so the plan was to do a double btwn music & psych.. but my advisors were on my ass- because "blah blah blah music majors take up a lot of time".. they were right. haha I had to drop out because I needed to work full time in order to pay for school and couldn't hack it.

My dh's mom is a musician. She tried to teach all her kids how to play piano, guitar, bass, drums, everything she can play. Out of 7 kids, 1 plays the bass quite a bit, 1 plays piano occasionally and 1 can play anything and everything (my dh), the rest all hate anything to do with playing music. Its much harder with your own kids, I suspect. lol

So, I DID major in music, and I know for a fact that I will never even attempt to teach either one of my kids to play. I will do exactly what you did La. I'll gladly send them to a teacher, but that teacher will not be me!

Oh man, I want to at least teach my kids the basics with piano but I don't know how they'd like that. I'm pretty sure my oldest would, but definitely not #2. But, I'm not sure how long I could be patient enough with it either.
