Help! Download Limits with ISP!

Little bit of background here: We live in the country, so high-speed internet is a commodity out here. Our current ISP is our neighbor. He got a huge tower installed on his property, that allows us to bounce off of it. Otherwise, because of the trees, we're screwed (dial-up *gasp*)

Anyway, we're having some HUGE issues. We're talking 50% down-time here. I can't live like that. The guy's a wing-nut.

So we get this message last night, saying that we've exceeded our 2GB per household limit for the month and it's only mid-month! WTF?

Have we really? How do I know? How can I find out (without taking his word for it)??

The only thing I'm downloading consistently is digi-files. And mostly from here.

Is there a way to figure out exactly how much has been downloaded? Is it really possible that my digi-files are exceeding 2GB per month?

Thoughts??

Leah...I'm no expert but I do know that lots of girl have this type of internet (I think a lot of the Aussie girls do and the girls from over in Europe) but I think every time to "load" a web page and it "downloads" the graphics that counts towards your monthly allotment......it's not just the actually files that count towards download limits.

My suggestion would be to turn off the signatures and avatars for any site you visit...because those graphics have to be "downloaded" to your computer.

Also do you have "off peak hours"....I remember a lot of the girls posting that anything downloaded between midnight and 6AM were like "free downloads"....you could get a download manager and have it set to download you links/files when you are sleeping.

If you want do a search over at DST for this subject....I know it's come up over there lots of time!!!

Good luck....hope I was able to help a bit!!!

Yep what Elizabeth said is true-about websites and adds and the such...My friend Chelle lives in Australia and struggles with the same thing!

And Time Warner is talking about doing this too.

It is something like 60 gigs megs whatever, but still every picture, every spam, every hacker attempt is just a little bit towards your "usage". Then they start charging overages. For them its just a way to make more money.

Maybe your neighbor has too many customers now and is cutting you back (where he didn't before).

We have limits on my broadband. They have a page you can go to monitor your bandwidth & if he is going to limit you to a certain amount he has to provide you with a way to check it. ours is just a page on the company website that displays search results by account number, we go out every so often during the month & check it.

Every single image that loads on a page counts toward it, all the ads, the videos, the jpgs, uploading layouts & photos usually counts toward it as well. I play no games on facebook because of it, I have sigs turned off everywhere. The last time I watched something on You Tube was when we all put our videos up & then only because I was at my parents' with their comcast.

I don't think it would be that hard to go over 2 GB in half a month. 2 GB = 2048 MB. I bought one kit from here today, and that was 125 MB total. Using that as an average that is 16 kits. And some kits are even bigger. Plus all the email and web browsing adds up too.

My DH was watching stuff on youtube with his laptop while out of town and quickly went over his 2 GB limit with the isp he uses away from home.

I guess...this is not going to work for us. For me anyway.

Our download speed can range anywhere from a sketchy-99kbs down to a measley 4kbs when I'm downloading kits.

Last night, at the B & B, I downloaded 6 SSD items, the QA and about 5 others. They were downloading between 300-500 kbs - I was AMAZED! It was so fast!

Our sucks royally, in comparison. Ours might has well be dial-up!!
