Alright, so... if you haven't tried a certain food item (ie: cilantro) and aren't sure you'll like it... don't make a recipe (ie: a giant batch of pico de gallo) where it's one of the few ingredients in said recipe. You'll just end up spending more time than you'd care to admit picking out the leafy green shrapnel with ninja-like OCD skillz.
:glare:
That is all.
Send it to me! I <3 <3 <3 cilantro.

Gah! You sound like Andrew used to sound about it--now he always adds more to the food I use it in. LOL!!

There is no middle ground with cilantro. You hat it or you love it. :p
I love it!

Yeah, I have a problem with Cilantro as well. Does it taste like soap to you? Certain people can taste the unsaturated aldahydes.....which is a compound in soaps. I have learned to deal with it in salsa but if given a choice, I would leave it out. I have a similar reaction to fresh parsley.

You know, I honestly read that aversion to cilantro was a genetic thing. Seriously. Weird, isn't it.
But I HEART cilantro.

This is exactly what I read, but I couldn't remember it! Thanks, Susan!

I just recently discovered my LOVE of cilantro. Once I moved out of Utah we started trying a lot more ethnic type foods and I love love love to cook Indian food and their stuff requires tons of cilantro. And now I even put it in my eggs in the morning.

That's exactly it, I had never heard that before. It tastes synthetic to me...not earthy & pleasant like other spices. To me it tastes a lot like how some plastic things smell when they are new out of a box.

lol Annie :) I acquired a taste for cilantro and now I love it. The first time I had it, I wasn't crazy about it, but now I buy/use it all of the time!

Yeah, I acquired a taste for paste when I was a kid (boy I bet that explains a lot) ;) ;) ROFL
I will say, the soap taste has pretty much neutralized in my Pico on day 2 and is quite pleasant. I think the tomato killed it LOL :D

The soap or detergent taste is a very common reason for dislike of cilantro. There is probably something genetic about those of us that can taste that chemical compound. Here is an article about it:

FYI - Julia Child hated cilantro.

My dh doesn't like cilantro, and I found out the same way...by making a HUGE batch of pico de gallo. I knew that I loved it, and figured he must love it too...because we're married...he has to love what I love...yada yada yada
NOPE.
That was many years ago, and I still make things with cilantro in it, but I just put a smaller amount in. He deals with it, mainly because he has to! I cook the meals ;)

THANK YOU. Now I actually can explain in a picture why it and parsley give me the heeby-geebies.

Am I the only person who finds parsley to be totally flavorless? I don't ever buy it because it seems pointless to me (even for garnish). Paprika's another one, unless it's smoked or hot paprika. Sweet paprika--pointless.

I like Italian/flat leaf parsley, and use it A LOT. But yes, it is a mild flavor, but it does add a brightness to a dish, sort of like how lemon can brighten something without actually tasting the lemon so much. The curly parsley is useless. I can't eat it, it doesn't taste the same, and the texture just gives me the willies.
And I agree with you on the paprika thing. Sweet paprika might was well be sold with food coloring, because that's just about all it's really good for.

I am seriously dying laughing, Susan, thank you so much for that article, I loved it! That was another thing I always wondered about, why cilantro tasted so gross, but coriander is so good. Annie, thanks for this thread, I no longer feel alone in my cilantro revulsion.
The article linked to ihatecilantro.com and let me just say that I am in love with the haikus ( http://www.ihatecilantro.com/haikus.php )...so filled with darkness and hatred for this vile weed :D :D :D
