Does anyone here use VOIP as their phone line, instead of a traditional phone company?

I'm thinking of making the switch, but I'm just not sure...

I used magicjack but they were pretty horrible. No customer service at all. I wasnt happy. Now I use vonage and it is pretty good. Im not sure if that is VOIP or not.

Vonage is who I'm looking at going through...my sister used them and liked it but their internet goes out too much so they'd be without a phone, etc...so they went back to a traditional phone line. But my internet doesn't go out that much, thankfully...

We used Vonage when we were in Florida. It worked just fine, but I found that I was consistently concernced that our phone wouldn't work when I really needed it. We switched back to a regular land line.

We've used Vonage for the last three years and had no complaints. I think the best benefit for us is being in the military, it allows us to keep the same phone number no matter where we move even if we're overseas. I also like having the number set up to forward to my cell phone so even if we're not home, I can still get calls from the home number, which is nice.

Did you have any specific concerns or questions?

Oh yea I like them alot. Sometimes I get an echo on the phone which is probably the worst thing I could say you might deal with. You have to have a checking account or credit card to sign up with and they take the money automatically every month so no bills to remember. Also you have to stay with them for 2 years or if you dont you have to pay 75 dollars to cancel your contract (at least that is how it was when we signed up). Honestly I dont have a whole lot of negatives with them to talk about. Oh and if your power goes out you have no phone service which sucks but that doesnt happen to often and we have three cell phones in the house if that ever happened for emergency use so its not a big deal.

Lynette, no specific questions...just wondered who had tried it and what they thought. I'm just SO tired of paying all these crazy prices for things that I could get for cheaper elsewhere (where I live, there is only one phone company available - they have the monopoly...so the only other option is VOIP).

pricewise it is awesome!! We were paying like 75 dollars a month for our phone service through BellSouth (they changed to ATT). With Vonage we pay 24.99 a month plus taxes. It works out to like 31 a month!!

We have it through our cable company. It's nice because when our cable goes out we get GREAT service because of the fact that it knocks our phone out, too. I mean, when we call and say there's a problem, they are there within a couple hours. When it was just the cable, they'd schedule an appointment for the next week. lol

And what's funny is, I don't even CARE if the phone goes out. I have a cellphone. :P

This exactly. :D Comcast is much faster on tech support now that we have the phone through them too.

We use voipvoip. The sound quality isn't the greatest, but we have the barebones package ($6/month) and just pay a cent or so a minute for what we use. It ends up being way cheaper than our landline ever was. My DH wants to cancel it because we really don't use our home phone all that much anyway, but his wanting to cancel it has nothing to do with the quality or price.
