to buy my 6yo velcro shoes because I'm tired of breaking what little nails I have trying to untie those double knots!? lol

I don't care about having long pretty nails - they just get in the way for me. But I'm really tired of breaking what fragile ones I do have down to the quick trying to untie his shoes for him. Ugh!

And they are so proud of themselves because they KNOW how to tie their shoelaces now right?? I go through this same thing with my six year old LOL

my son's school asks the parents to not let the kids wear tie shoes until they are in second grade, so Logan only has velcro shoes. I had hand surgery so my small motor skills are awful now anyway. I'm not looking forward to tieing shoes and am glad I haven't had to deal with it yet.

LOL - well, mine still can't tie his shoe, so going velcro would kill 2 birds with 1 shoe ;)

I can barely tie shoes because of my RA, so mine still have velcro. I need to teach them but it's so hard for me to do.

No it's not wrong!!! When my 4 year old wears tennis shoes it's only velcro for both the reasons you posted!! But right now during the summer we do what Crystal does...crocs or flip flops ALL THE WAY!!!! :D :D

The only reason it's an issue right now is that they in VBS where they need something a bit sturdier. Otherwise, it's always crocs here, too.

But owie, my finger is really sore lol

My boys wear veclro most of the time too, neither of them can tie their shoes yet. Devin has low tone in his hands/arms, so it's very hard for him. JP, on the other hand...well, let's just say he didn't want to learn, so nobody made him. Like Julie's son's school, the school here request velcro shoes for all children through second grade. They take it one step further and request that if your third grade or higher child cannot tie laces--velcro. We're spending the summer making JP learn to tie laces. Fun!

Anyway, JP is attending summer school this year, and they require a closed toe shoe for safety. I figured that sneakers would be just too hot, so I found these: Keen's (http://www.keenfootwear.com/product/ss09/shoes/kids/youth/newport%20h2/caribbean%20sea). I hated spending that much on sandals, but JP's got flinstone feet w/ a very high arch. Sigh...

I've seen similar sandals for less at Kohl's and Payless. Dang his Flinstone feet!!

I hate velcro-I avoid it by buying Landen Crocs and Keens for the Summer-but I deal with it in the Winter because-well-I hate the look of velcro!

In kindergarten the children were told to wear tie shoes...they learned in kindergarten how to tie. Unfortuntely they taught them that stupid "bunny ears" tying...well my son is adhd and has PDD-NOS...at 15 years he is still typing those stupid bunny ears and it takes him 4x as long to tie his shoes as the rest of us!!! Usually he just leaves them long and dragging (which I have stepped on almost tripping us both!)....so I bought the curly shoe laces and said the heck with it!

I'd buy velcro if he would wear it...but the velcro sound and the "texture" bothers him immensely and dr said that is common for these kids and just to buy the curly laces or slip on shoes if he will wear them.

Ugh, I feel your pain, Darcy. My 5yo has to wear tie shoes because she has shoe inserts to prevent toe-walking. Luckily she just learned to tie her shoes, but I am constantly untieing double-knotted shoes. I hate it. She'd still be wearing the slip-on Sketchers, but they're against doctor's orders.

Short answer - Go for the velcro shoes.

my 6yo wears slip ons with elastic inside, or velcro. I just don't have the patience to wait for him to tie his shoes in the mornings. hehehe
my 10yo on the other hand, she has laces and never ties them. ugh!

I got my daughter these exact sandals at our Nordstrom Rack for $25. So if anyone else is interested, might check there if you have one near you :)

I made sure that my kids knew how to tie their shoes before kindergarten and I refuse to buy anything but tie shoes since. Now my one year old - he gets velcro because I have to put them on!

I would work on teaching him to tie his shoes to take the burden off of you.

Ill tell you a little trick I always use. I crochet so I take one of my smaller hooks (like a steel hook for making doilies) and find the center of the knot and stick the hook in and wiggle it around til it loosens up and then use my fingers to undo the knot. It is so much easier.

Mine has new shoes too- velcro! He still struggles tying them and it's just easier. We'll practice but for "quick changes", it's the velcro shoes!

Tyler knows how to tie his shoes (at 6 1/2), but doesn't like to and becomes frustrated in abt 2.5 seconds if he can't get them tied the first time, so we avoid tie shoes at all costs during the summer.

His mom bought him these lumberjack boots (the best description I can think of) last winter that he insisted on wearing all the time. OMG. I abt lost my mind having to tie those things as the laces have to be retightened every time, then looped through these top hook things, and then doubletied. I hope his feet are too big for them this year.
