Horrible reflux - HELP

So, all of sudden, within the last week and a half, I have developed serious reflux. I have no idea what caused it, but it is CONSTANT and the over the counter meds I am taking aren't even making a dent. I just started Prilosec OTC today, so hopefully that will kick in in a couple days. I have an appointment with the Gastroenterologist....but they couldn't fit me in until October 8th (which is insane).

Has anyone had something like this before? What could be the cause? Any tips or suggestions? This is killing me.

Thanks!
Susan

My doctor told me that fatty and/or spicy foods, alcohol, stress, physical position of the body can all cause reflux. I cut down my fatty food intake (don't eat too much spicy, don't drink, can't really remove stress unless I lose the family...) and changed how I sit when I'm at the computer. I'm doing ok, but still need meds. I have prescription Prilosec, but it makes me feel worse so I'm going back in for something else.

only two things have caused me to suddenly develope reflux....not related to something I ate or dietary change. 1. was my period and 2. was pregnancy. So both of those are hormonal so if you don't think that it's diet related can you perhaps think of anything that has maybe messed with your hormones!?!?! Good luck.....I know how miserable it can be so i hope you figure something out real quick!!! ((((HUGS))))

I've had issues with reflux when other part of my GI doesn't seem to be functioning properly (tmi reads: being a little backed up). Always happens when I travel 'cause I have issues with using other bathrooms than my own (yes, I know I'm weird).

My sister developed severe symptoms shortly before she had her gall bladder removed.

My mom had serious issues with this because she was taking too much Ibruprofen. She suffers from chronic pain and was taking Ibruprofen every day and it was causing her reflux problems. I guess it is really hard on the stomach. Soo...I thought I would mention this, just in case you happen to be taking Ibruprofen on a regular basis.

My sister went through a bad bout with reflux and then they found she needed her gall bladder out....

Maybe you could call your Doctor's Office back and tell them you will keep the Oct.8th appointment, but that if they have a cancellation, you might be able to come in sooner?

Thanks everyone. I have emailed my Primary Care doc to see if there is anything more i can do while I wait for this GI appointment. There are a few things that you all have mentioned that make me wonder. Whenever I am at the computer designing, I tend to slouch, which I know can exacerbate reflux. Also, I do have my period right now and had been taking lots of ibuprofen for the cramps. I am going to mention all of this to my doc and see if she has any other ideas.

This is really awful and it is just constant. Nothing is making a dent.

In addition to the advice you've already gotten, I would try a drug called Aciphex. It is by RX only, but it worked wonders on me when I was PG and had horrible AR.

Zantac (which is the same as Ranitidine), worked for my first pregnancy, but didn't help at all with Thomas. So weird! I hope you get some relief, I know how horrible it feels {{{HUGS}}}

Prilosec helps me a lot, so hope it will work for you. There are so many things that can cause this -- another is a hiatal hernia.
