Printing Books?

for those of you that print books I have a couple of questions:

1. do you ALWAYS print in chronological order? {I ask because I don't always scrap in order}
2. which site do you like best?
3. what size do you print?
4. how do you do your front/back cover?

I've only printed "themed" books... pregnancy, year in review, baby's first year... and those were all in order of when things happened... other layouts I haven't printed yet, but figuring I'd be just printing separate and putting into a binder.

I've used Shutterfly and ArtsCow... both okay, one is expensive, the other is slow (I'm very impatient in waiting for the books to come)... LOL!

I like the 8x8 size, even my paper albums at 12x12 kind of annoy me in size and trying to find a bookshelf to put them on.

I create a layout for the cover - and it's guessing game, I start with their measurements and then load, fix, reload, until I'm happy. For the back cover, I usually take a complementary paper and load it as is... sometimes I'll add a caption on the back that says when it's created.

Yes, I always print my books in chronological order. I do skip around from month to month, but I just wait until I have say April-June ready finished and I print them.

2. which site do you like best? Viovio.com, for the price, hands down. I was printing with shutterfly, and it was just way too much. I've tried Artscow and hated them.

3. what size do you print? Started off with 12x12 books, then switched to 8x8 last year. Viovio prints in 8.5x8.5 and I find those to be perfect.

4. how do you do your front/back cover? You can do them just like a scrapbook page. just look at Shutterfly or Viovio, they have templates that you can download so you can see what will show up when printed.

I just wanted to add something I love about Viovio is that I don't have to worry about color correction like I did with shutterfly. More than once I've forgotten to turn off Vivpics and my cover will be off or one of my pages. I've never had this problem with Viovio.

I've printed 2 books with them, ALways go with the pro binding btw.

And I've printed 26 with shutterfly.

I think the quality compares great.

And, with shutterfly you can only do 100 pages, viovio you can do 160 in the 8.5x8.5 size.

One thing about Artscow, if you've never printed a book from another company, you'd probably love it. And, it is the cheapest because they give you so many free book codes.

ok..another question...if you printed at Artscow did you have any cutoff? I figure right now I have the time to spare to order from them because they are having a pretty big freebook sale, but wanted to see what you guys thought...

As far as your pages?

I'm sure they do, but just look and see what their specs are. It should tell you exactly what size your pages need to be.

I have been printing my books by theme. My nephews have asked me to make them a book for Christmas so I think I will just have a series of fun layouts, not necessarily chronological.

I like Shutterfly. When I can I usually wait until they have a sale or I have a coupon. I love the quality. They are pricey but when I really thought about how much was spent on paper scrapping compared to having the book made by Shutterfly using the kits from Sweet Shoppe I think it is really about the same amount of money or less. It just is more shocking because you pay for it all at once.

what size do you print?

I have been doing 8x8. When I was a paper scrapper I did 12x12. While I loved having all of that room to design a page, the album would just get too heavy for my elderly grandmother to really hold and my nephew (same one who wants the book) actually broke one by dropping it accidentally. The 8x8 really seems like a nice size I just have to learn to put less on a page. LOL. Plus, the 8x8 is easy to put on a bookshelf and it is a good size to put out when entertaining for guests to enjoy.

Also, just because I didn't want to deal with the "what if I calculated wrong and they end up printing my page so I lose part of the journaling and now this is in a bound book problem", I choose the template with the small border around it. It looks professional and I can rest easy that nothing is lost.

how do you do your front/back cover?

With my Shutterfly albums I have been choosing two photos from the album (one for front & one for back) that are my favorites and then just make them the whole cover. I think it makes the book look inviting.
