If your kid had H1N1 what treatment did they get?

Julie Billingsley

The Ghost of Awesome Past
I think Logan, my 6 year old, has H1N1. 3 days ago a kid in his class was said to have H1N1 and we were sent a notice about it. Then Thursday Logan began to feel horrible. Friday was bad and we called the doctor to have him be seen. But they didn't want to see him and just said to keep him home and observe him. Then last night I got a note from Logan's school that 5 kids in his class plus the teacher have H1N1. But still the doctor's office doesn't think Logan needs to be seen. I've been to the CDC website and in their info they say you don't need to be seen for typical cases of H1N1. Ugh... I guess I just thought they did something if you ended up with it! If you've had H1N1 hit your house, what treatment did you get from a doctor? I'm trying to figure out if I need to get more forceful with the doctor's office.

a boy that's in 2nd grade w/ my boys came down w/ it.... they didn't even send home a notice. he's just home being taken care of by mom and just being treated like you'd treat any other flu.

Oh, Julie, I am so sorry. I hope he gets better soon and no one else gets it. I don't have any advice, just healthy thoughts.

are they not prescribing tamiflu for H1N1? or is that only for people that have underlying medical conditions?

We haven't had H1N1, but I work on a college campus and many of our students have it. They're being told to stay home unless they need medical treatment. They are not testing anymore to verify if in fact it is H1N1, and they're only treating the very severe cases. That's what we're being told right now. I just don't think they can see everyone who has it, especially since most cases will be fairly mild. They're really encouraging isolation more than anything.

Not sure if that helps, but at least it's some info. I hope he feels better soon!

Oh honey how stressful. I don't have any more input that what has already been said here but wanted to send healthy thoughts also. Hope he feels better soon! ((hugs))

Four of my friend's five kids are dealing with H1N1 (she is too) right now. The girls, ages 6, 5, and 3, were all given Tamiflu. The boy (13) wasn't, but only because it was too late in the course of the illness.

I suspect that D & I both had H1N1 in the last couple of weeks. D's doctor didn't want to see him either. He said that we should just treat him like we normally would for the flu. Mind you, D hasn't had the flu since he was 13 mos old--and he developed pneumonia from it, but nope, no need to come in. My doctor, on the other hand, said that I should be seen if I felt it necessary. I did go in and "missed" an H1N1 diagnosis because my fever wasn't high enough. I got xayed and DXed with pneumonia instead. The only time I get pneumonia? When I have the flu. Andrew and JP didn't get sick. Lucky dogs.

What I'm reading is to be watchful of returning symptoms. If he improves and then suddenly takes a step or two backwards--it's time to go in no matter what they say.

I hope he's feeling better soon, Julie!

Oh, i hope he starts feeling better soon Julie! What symptoms does he have? I know I'm going to be worried when the first sickness comes into our house this fall!! Hugs, and hopefully he is on the mend!

I'm fairly certain Luke had it. The doctor didn't test him and he didn't get anything for it. We just treated the symptoms with OTC stuff. He had a fever of 102ish for four days and diarrhea. :(

His fever did spike up to 103.8 while on Tylenol and that was the scariest thing EVER. But we gave him a dose of Motrin and swabbed him with cold washcloths and it came down.

I hope it passes quickly for you!

sore throat, coughing to the point of sometimes throwing up, slight runny nose, dizzy, nausea to the point of not eating at all for 2 days now, fever that stays about 101 with tylenol every 4 hours, says the world is 'crooked' and seems a little out of it and confused, very lethargic, body aches, red cheeks from the fever, sweaty hair, generally weak. Yep, it's a fun house here.

I just feel rotten that I have to work later today and all tomorrow and can't get out of work. :( I need to be with my sweetie. :(

I'm sorry Julie!!! I would say if his fever keeps spiking up high and if he can't keep anything down today or tomorrow then you need to take him back in. Poor guy!!! I hope he gets better soon!!!

i don't have any firsthand advice, but I was watching "The Doctor's this week and the two symptoms that I remember them saying to especially keep an eye out for are the lethargic behavior and labored/heavy breathing...those were more serious signs of the virus.

Hope everyone gets better soon!!

I'm sorry Julie. You know, H1N1 or not, if my kid had symptoms like that for more than 2 days I'd take them in. Also if 'not eating' includes liquids or he isn't able to hold them down then he needs to get in there for rehydration anyway.

Awww poor dude. :( I agree with misty though, if he can't even keep liquids down.. i'd take him in. :(

he IS staying hydrated. That is the one thing they will see him for. Actually they said just go to ER if he is dehydrated, otherwise don't come in. He ate a half of a banana about 30 minutes ago! :)

I totally agree with this.

I'm so sorry Julie... I hope it runs its course quickly!

As long as he's hydrated, it should be ok - miserable but ok. A friend of mine, a nurse, said the most important thing is to make sure kids stay hydrated. Once they become dehydrated things quickly turn for the worse.
I hope he feels better soon and the rest of you stay healthy!!!

so sorry :( poos kiddo....and at our hosiptal they are still seeing kids but they told me {when I thought Abby may have it} to just keep her hydrated and try to keep her fever down, but luckily she didn't have it, just ate something that made her sick...hope he feels better soon...

I'm almost positive I had it (I had a flu in late June, H1N1 was widespread in AZ at the time and there was no regular flu going around), and these were very similar to the symptoms I had. I was very dizzy and coughed so much that I coughed up blood -- that was not a fun moment. Fortunately, my friend is a Dr. and talked me down off the ledge about that.

Ugh, Dawn that sounds horrible!

thanks again all :)

Logan is slowly getting better. I talked to the doctor again this afternoon and really they just aren't doing anything about H1N1 unless the kid is dehydrated or has other preexisting health issues. Logan has kept down water this whole time unless the coughing gets real bad. So luckily he is not dehydrated. He got hungry (yay!) at dinnertime so my husband gave him 2 hotdogs. (Hotdogs wouldn't have been my choice but I was at work.) Logan just gobbled them up plus a yogurt. So I think we are turning a corner and his appetite is coming back. His fever is very slight now too. He is still very achy, sniffly, and with a bad cough, and just lays on the couch, not playing. But still in all, it's an improvement.

Logan has had the 'flu before, gets it every year and this is clearly the worst he has ever had it. Imagine the worst 'flu for 4 days straight. It's rotten. :(

Julie, I'm glad he's feeling a bit better! I know they are pushing isolation here as well. I hope he continues to feel well and is back to normal soon!

Aww, poor Logan. I'm glad he is doing a bit better though. Hope he's back to normal real soon!

Still battling this. :( Still has all the same symptoms and temp stays about 100-101.5. He is just miserable. Unfortunitely I think my husband is getting it too.

Oh, Julie - I'm sorry that he's still so sick. :( I really hope your husband doesn't get it too. I'm thinking about you guys, and praying that your little guy is feeling better soon!

Oh Julie I am sorry he is still sick....and just baffled at why the dr won't see him. I am sure they deal regularly with a lot of overeacting mothers but doesn't it seem weird that if you have called as many times as you have - I would think "huh maybe we should see her kid?!" I guess I am lucky - I have an urgent care that is open 24 hours and if my kid is sick I take them. I work and often my sick days are for my girls - so I like to get the diagnosis fast and medication in them so we don't have to miss a lot of work and school in our home.

However, right now my daughter is going through the same as your son. She has been sick since Friday and was seen on Saturday - they did give her Tamiflu and something else - but I am on the fence whether to take her back in again. She has the nastiest cough I have heard and my fear is that is gone beyond bronchitis - the original diagnosis I got.

Here is what they say online about seeing the dr:

If I think I have swine flu, what should I do? When should I see my doctor?

If you have flu symptoms, stay home, and when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Afterward, throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. That will help prevent your flu from spreading.

If you have only mild flu symptoms, you do not need medical attention unless your illness gets worse. But if you are in one of the groups at high risk of severe disease, contact your doctor at the first sign of flu-like illness. In such cases, the CDC recommends that people call or email their doctor before rushing to an emergency room.
But there are emergency warning signs.

Children should be given urgent medical attention if they:
  • Have fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Have bluish or gray skin color
  • Are not drinking enough fluid
  • Are not waking up or not interacting
  • Have severe or persistent vomiting
  • Are so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Have flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and a worse cough
  • Have fever with a rash
Since he is eating and didn't throw it up - maybe things are on the upswing with him. Good luck to you! Frustrating to be a mom who knows when her kid is sick!

That is exactly what the docs are saying Darla, except they say don't even come in unless urgent care is needed. It is SO huge in the Portland Oregon area right now that they are really doing NOTHING for it. My husband stopped by Logan's school and 11 of the 24 kids in his class PLUS the teacher have been out all week because of it. Logan missed all week. I think he will be fine for monday. It's been bad but the fever is over and last night and today he has eaten normally. He is just still zapped though. And the cough is still going on. We've all had enough of this. :( I just cry at the thought that some kiddos have died from this. :( It's the worst that Logan has been sick but we are fortunate for sure.
