and i traced my grandpa's roots (my moms dad) back to freaking 1410 in Wiltshire England!! how freaking cool is that?!!! i couldn't find anything but born/died on my other grandpa :( but i can't wait to call my mom tomorrow and tell her what i found! i was trying to see if we had ancestors from Australia; we had heard that we did. all i saw was Wales and England unless they were from even further back. i love history! especially when its yours!

that is awesome!! Most of my ancestors are from Germany from what I understand from my sister researching it years ago. It is hard to trace for my family though because my mom's mother never told her who her real father was

My girlfriend (who does this all the time) sat down with me one day and was doing some for my husband. His is so hard since his dad and all his siblings had different fathers and no one knew much about his mom. We found that his father had been living as a child with his mom and grandparents, and that the census taker had been a bit confused, because instead of writing "Sioux" down, they must've just said "Indian", and from there the census has them as "Hindu". This is all handwritten that you can actually see. It was very cool, and I'd love the time to really do more research. Supposedly, my husbands mothers side goes back to Robert E. Lee, and on my side, my maternal great grandfather supposedly was the master plumber on the Titanic. Since I know when my birth mother and sister came over from England, most of my history on that side will be from over in England, Scotland and N. Ireland.

I am fascinated with family history...and thankfully I have a few older relatives who have spent years doing research and gathering documentation on our family. I can get back to the late 1400s on my mom's side of the family...but can't find anything other than birth/death of my grandparents on my dad's side. Both of his parents were orphaned as children in Louisiana, and from what I understood, the courthouse records in the areas they lived have been destroyed by fire. I do have their parents and grandparents names...but have never found anything on them.

And just a sidenote...you have to be careful with other people's research. Unless they have the documentation, you just don't know how accurate it is. I've found my line on the web several times, but there are some points at which people are 'reaching' and going with best guesses and not fact. I've even found family trees that literally go back to Adam & Eve.

yah, part of me is a little unsure of how much is true; i'll have to ask my mom the names of her grandpa and so on; don't know how far back she knows. probably not too far. but its still SO cool!

i'm disapointed that i couldn't find my other grandpas history on there. my uncle once did something and found out some of our relatives are from Germany. but not completely sure. i figure most people's ancesters came over from England, Ireland and places.

My DH has been working on our family tree for years. He has SO many relatives on it now, it's insane. It's really fun to have a look, I'm not related to anyone famous, but it's a treasure to have.

my mom has a bunch of stuff that goes back a little bit. she's going to bring it here and we're going to search together. i'm very tempted to get a 14 day trial at Ancestry.com. i found some Passenger and Immigration information a few generations back, but of course it won't let me view it without a trial/payin. and its 149 bucks for 6 months if you pay! but it would be so neat to do.

If you have time Corey, you don't need that kind of site necessarily. DH is signed up to some email lists, so he gets emails often from people looking for people. He's done a lot of Googling, some records searching, etc. It's quite a hobby. Since he started his photography, he hasn't spent the time on it he used to, but I know he still dabbles here and there.

That is so cool! I have traced my dad's side because both maternal and paternal sides have unique names. I can trace my paternal grandfather's side extensively because there are very few that have the last name and apparently the French kept very good records! LOL!
