I suddenly have a very strong urge to get back to sewing. My friend is having a baby mid-February and her shower is in early January. I was thinking of making a rag quilt as my gift.

She's not finding out the sex, so I have the challenge of picking something gender neutral. What do you think of this pattern:

Do you think its too boy?

I was thinking of doing a Christmas quilt for myself as practice using this fabric:

i think its cute! and i wish i knew how to sew. i love rag quilts. i love that christmas pattern too!

I love both!! (I was looking at fabric on that site for about two hours the other day!! I so want to try my hand at making a quilt. Id like to try a rag quilt...do you have any sites to suggest or books?)

That's cute fabric. My niece is expecting a baby girl in mid-February and I can't wait to tat her our family heirloom baby booties.

Love both of those. I have the last release of the sock monkey fabric line. I don't have a quilt pattern for it though. I designed my own pattern but, it is currently still a UFO (unfinished object) like my other 20 or so quilts.

I know the owner of the Fat Quarter Shop. She is super sweet. She is a true success story! She lives near me and I owned a quilt shop for 3 1/2 years so, we moved in the same circles.

Have you made a quilt before Jennifer? I have TONS of references, tips I can give you if you need help along the way.

I love rag quilts...I've been wanting to make one for a few years. I *finally* picked out fabric for my son...now I just have to get my hands on it, lol!

I am not a beginner, but by no means at all skilled. I've sewn off and on since I was little. I even made our stockings two years ago. I've done some patchwork stuff, scarves, bags etc. And, back in high school, I made a 60x60 throw for my mom - patchwork with yarn ties at each intersection. What I've not done much of is actual quilting, stitching through many layers. I'm a little scared of that. I've practiced a little on smaller pieces, but I'm never sure which needle I'm supposed to be using (for machine quilting). I'm not sure I have the patience to quilt by hand.

Here is what I use Jennifer. I use the 75/90's.

Do you have a quilting foot? What kind of machine do you have?

I have a Brother BC-1000. I know it came with several feet, but that's beyond what I know. Here are the specs.

Edited to add that a.) I have a lot more space for sewing than that now but b.) my house is not nearly as pretty or color-coordinated.
